Of course, most people understood that Wu Xiaocan was just crying sour grapes, hearing his words but not believing them, yet though no one believed him, for a time Shen Yushu was still thrust into the eye of the storm.

Shen Yushu had never suffered such an insult, so she confronted Wu Xiaocan to argue it out and even slapped him hard in public, whereupon Wu Xiaocan issued a vicious threat, telling Shen Yushu to watch out after school, for he would get men to gang-rape her.

This matter later reached Shen Yushu's brother Chen Yuming, on a winter afternoon, and Zhong Yongliang could never forget the scene of that day.

A Land Rover stopped at the school gate, and a tall, powerfully built young man got out of the car and went straight to Wu Xiaocan, who was playing football on the field.

Wu Xiaocan still sensed nothing then, and said to Chen Yuming with great swagger, "It is no use whoever comes, what the hell are you, just some stinking soldier, who are you trying to scare, let me tell you, however well you can fight, we have a whole crowd here, we can crush you to death."

Chen Yuming said only one sentence, "Go to the school broadcast station and apologize to Shen Yushu, and we will call this matter settled."

Wu Xiaocan laughed, a wild laugh, for he had never heard such a ridiculous joke, and his gang of lackeys burst out laughing with him.

Chen Yuming frowned, planted a kick in Wu Xiaocan's belly that sent him tumbling, then swung his fists down upon Wu Xiaocan's body, and at once came the sound of breaking bones.

Wu Xiaocan's lackeys were scared silly on the spot, for though they usually fought and brawled, they had never before seen a man who broke bones the moment he struck, and this was simply not on their level at all.

Chen Yuming was truly furious, for Shen Yushu had been his darling since childhood, and he had never let her suffer the least hardship, yet Wu Xiaocan had not only laid hands on his little sister, but spread rumors to insult her and even threatened her, and Chen Yuming could bear it no longer.

At the time Zhong Yongliang was one of Wu Xiaocan's lackeys, standing among that crowd, and watching Wu Xiaocan howl like a slaughtered pig, he was utterly shaken, and the miserable scene even woke him from nightmares for days afterward.

Wu Xiaocan's family was certainly powerful too, otherwise Wu Xiaocan could not have put on such airs, but on learning that the man who beat him was a major general in the army, they wilted a little.

However powerful you are locally, you cannot reach into army affairs, and though the matter was reported to Chen Yuming's unit and Chen Yuming received some punishment, it did not harm him in the least.

That was only Chen Yuming's own background, and later Wu Xiaocan's family learned of the background of Shen Yushu and Chen Yuming's parents, as well as Old Master Chen far away in the capital.

Few people knew of this affair, but Zhong Yongliang happened to be one who did, so even with a hundred times the courage he would not dare provoke Shen Yushu, that little terror, and thinking of how Wu Xiaocan had looked then, Zhong Yongliang shivered for no reason.

In truth, Zhong Yongliang was just a bully of the weak who feared the strong, and before Chen Yuming's absolute fists he dared not harbor the slightest thought of resistance, for though his own family had some power and his father's clubs kept a few thugs, how could such men compare with Chen Yuming's regular army.
