Chapter 30 — Fighting Violence with Violence
"I'm not going." The moment Gu Mengyao heard Wei Zhao's name, the blushing scene from the morning flashed back into her mind. She frowned and kept her eyes on the English book in her hands, since she still had not memorized today's words.
"Come on," Shen Yushu was itching with curiosity. "There's nothing going on right now anyway."
"Go yourself if you want to go, I'm not going," Gu Mengyao said with a snort. "Xiao Shu, are you lovesick or something? Have you fallen for that country bumpkin?"
"Nonsense!" Shen Yushu flushed red and shot back. "Who would fall for him? I just want to go watch the excitement."
"Then go by yourself. I'm definitely not going anyway," Gu Mengyao said firmly.
"Come on, Sister Yaoyao, he is your study companion after all. To beat a dog you still have to respect its master. If Wei Zhao gets beaten up, you will lose face too," Shen Yushu clearly refused to give up and kept coaxing Gu Mengyao.
"Xiao Shu, why are you so annoying?" Gu Mengyao was so pestered she could not even read her book. "Fine, fine. I'll go have a look with you."
"Hee hee... let's go!" Shen Yushu grabbed Gu Mengyao's hand in high spirits, and the two ran off toward the rooftop together. "I hope we don't miss the best part!"
On the rooftop, Zhong Yongliang, Zhang Naipao and Gao Xiaofu were grinning wickedly and rubbing their fists together. Zhong Yongliang coolly held a cigarette between his lips, and the quick-eyed Gao Xiaofu snapped a lighter with a click and lit it for him.
Zhong Yongliang took a deep, satisfied drag, then blew the smoke right into Wei Zhao's face. "Damn, weren't you so tough? Go on, pull your trick out again? Splash me again?"
"If you are looking for trouble over yesterday, then fine, I admit it was my fault," Wei Zhao said with a calm expression. "But what happened today has nothing to do with me."
"Oh? Now you know how to admit you were wrong?" Zhong Yongliang savored the feeling of his rival backing down, but said arrogantly, "Too late, though. And today has nothing to do with you? Are you stupid or what? Still running your mouth at a time like this?"
"There were so many empty urinals, what were you doing standing behind me? You didn't have to wait in line, did you?" Wei Zhao said deadpan.
"Enough of that useless crap. Admitting fault won't save you now. Xiao Fu, show him some color," Zhong Yongliang waved his hand and said to Gao Xiaofu.
"Hehe, here I come!" Gao Xiaofu cackled and pulled a chair leg from behind his back as he walked toward Wei Zhao.
Wei Zhao still felt a little guilty about inexplicably kicking Zhong Yongliang yesterday, and had meant to find a chance to explain himself, but looking at things now there was no need. To deal with this kind of man, you had to fight violence with violence.
"Kid, of all the people to offend, you just had to offend Brother Liang. I think you really don't want to get by here anymore," Gao Xiaofu said as he raised the chair leg in his hand and smashed it down at Wei Zhao.
Zhong Yongliang smoked smugly to one side, feeling wonderfully pleased with himself. Let you mess with me, he thought. If I don't crack your skull open today, my name isn't Zhong.
Zhong Yongliang already seemed to picture blood spraying from Wei Zhao's forehead, and he licked his lips in excitement.
"Smack!" Gao Xiaofu swung the chair leg out, but Zhong Yongliang never got to see blood fly from Wei Zhao. Looking closer, he realized the chair leg had already been caught tight in Wei Zhao's hand.
Gao Xiaofu frowned and yanked hard at the chair leg, only to find it would not move at all. He grew anxious at once and had to put even more strength into his hands.
"Xiao Fu, what the hell are you doing?" Zhong Yongliang had no idea of Gao Xiaofu's struggle, and seeing the two locked there in a tug of war, he barked out the question.
"Brother Liang, this kid has some brute strength!" Gao Xiaofu said.
"Naipao, get in there with him!" Zhong Yongliang was annoyed. He had not expected the kid to have some skill. Ordinary students would have been scared silly the moment they stepped onto the rooftop, long before anyone even laid a hand on them.
"Wei Zhao, watch out!" Seeing Wei Zhao busy dealing with Gao Xiaofu while Zhang Naipao charged in from the other side with a mop handle, Kang Xiaobo quickly called out a warning.
Wei Zhao had originally thought that when these students fought they only meant to frighten each other, but he had not expected them to bring out vicious weapons like chair legs and mop handles. A blow like that to the head would surely cause grave injury.
Afraid Wei Zhao could not handle it alone, Kang Xiaobo braced himself and moved to meet Zhang Naipao. Zhang Naipao had never imagined that Kang Xiaobo, who never said a word in class, would dare to stand against him, and he was furious beyond measure.
So Zhang Naipao was in no hurry to attack Wei Zhao anymore, planning to put Kang Xiaobo down first.
Wei Zhao roughly knew Kang Xiaobo's limits. From the way he faced his enemy, it was clear he was no seasoned fighter. That he had come up to the rooftop together was purely out of brotherly loyalty, and Wei Zhao found that truly rare.
Kang Xiaobo was terrified inside. He had never been in a fight and had no idea what to do at the moment, so he could only shut his eyes, flail his arms, and charge forward. Zhang Naipao had never seen such a man before. Charging forward with your eyes shut, wasn't that asking for death?
Zhang Naipao let out a cackling laugh and swung the mop handle down at Kang Xiaobo. This time Wei Zhao dared not hold back. If he did not get ruthless now, Kang Xiaobo would probably leave his life here today.
With that thought, Wei Zhao stopped being polite. He jerked his hand back sharply and dragged forward with force, yanking Gao Xiaofu into a stumble, then kicked out hard. Before Gao Xiaofu even understood what had happened, he let go of the chair leg, clutched his belly, and sank down in pain.
Gao Xiaofu's face turned the color of pig liver at once. He felt the barbecue he had eaten at noon churning endlessly in his stomach, as if it were about to come spewing out.
Kang Xiaobo charged forward knowing nothing, when suddenly he felt a sharp gust of wind sweep past him. He opened his eyes to see a mop handle dropping fast toward the top of his head, and his heart lurched. It's over, this time it's really over!
Kang Xiaobo thought of his laid-off mother at home, of his father laboring hard in the factory, of his sister working far away from home... If he got hurt, how would they ever afford the medical bills...
"Crack!" With a huge bang, Kang Xiaobo felt the sky spin and the earth tilt. Everything was finished...
"Aow..." A shrill howl jolted Kang Xiaobo with a start, yet when he touched the top of his head, nothing seemed wrong at all. He opened his eyes in confusion to find Zhang Naipao clutching his head and writhing on the ground in agony, his forehead smeared with blood.
Wei Zhao had struck with measure. He had not aimed at the back of the head or the temples, those two fatal spots, but had chosen the forehead instead. That bone is hard, and a chair leg coming down on it could not do too much damage, at most split the skin open and cause a mild concussion.
Of course, Wei Zhao had already shown mercy. Otherwise, no matter where he had hit, Zhang Naipao's brains would have burst open.
