Chapter 48 — An Ambiguous Moment: Begging for Recommendation Votes, Begging for Collections! Thank You, Everyone!

The Blossom Guardian

...

When Guan Xin came to work this morning, she heard the whole of the surgery department — doctors and nurses alike — talking about a man named Wei Zhao. At first she paid it no mind, taking it for some bit of gossip; but listening more closely, she was astonished to find that what everyone was discussing was yesterday's bank robbery.

As someone who had been there in person, Guan Xin naturally had the most authority to speak. And when she told them how the young man in front of her had stood up on his own and volunteered to be a hostage, there was an uproar — so it was all true after all; that young man from yesterday really was a hero.

Sun Weimin had told everyone as much before, but since the police had not disclosed the details, many people had assumed Wei Zhao was bragging to Sun Weimin. Now, with Guan Xin's eyewitness account, it seemed Wei Zhao truly was a little hero.

"What? He came to our hospital for treatment yesterday? Then that means he got out of the robbers' hands?" Hearing Sun Weimin's words, Guan Xin was overjoyed at once, and the heavy stone that had been pressing on her heart lifted along with it.

All of yesterday she had been worrying about Wei Zhao and that girl's safety; she had not slept well the whole night. Now, at last, she could set her mind at ease.

"Isn't that so?" Sun Weimin laughed. "Wei Zhao is quite a fellow, and no mistake. But Xinxin, you really are a lucky girl. Yesterday Wei Zhao said that when the thug fired, he could have dodged it — but he saw there was a girl behind him, and if he had dodged, that bullet would surely have hit her. So he turned back and took the shot head-on. And that lucky girl, it seems, was you."

"Ah, so that's how it was..." Guan Xin's mouth fell open in surprise. No wonder he had turned sideways and then straightened himself again... he had been afraid of hurting her.

"Heh heh, Xinxin, Wei Zhao is coming back to the hospital in a while to have his dressing changed. I'll tell him to come and find you," Sun Weimin said with a smile.

In truth, Sun Weimin did not know Guan Xin's real identity either; the director had merely mentioned to him once that Guan Xin had been placed here by someone important, and that he should give her whatever care was necessary.

Sun Weimin was by nature a very mild and modest man. Even without the director's word, he treated everyone in the department well — the young ones especially, guiding them as much as he could and never keeping anything to himself.

Guan Xin's face flushed at once. A tale of a hero saving a beauty like this could hardly keep a girl from reading things into it — and this one was so dramatic, too: after being wounded, Wei Zhao had come to the very hospital where she worked for treatment.

Wei Zhao looked at the nurse before him, all seductive in her uniform, and found her somewhat familiar, though he could not place where he had seen her. But that line of hers, "You don't recognize me anymore?", sent a chill down his spine.

Why did it feel as though he were some heartless cad who had toyed with a girl's feelings?

"You... you are?" Wei Zhao studied her suspiciously, trying to read some clue in her big, bright eyes — but alas, he still could not remember who she was.

Small wonder. She had been no more than a fleeting passer-by he had met yesterday, whose name he did not even know. There was no way Wei Zhao could possibly have any impression of her.

"Thank you. For taking that bullet for me yesterday." Seeing that Wei Zhao did not recognize her, Guan Xin could not help feeling a little disappointed, and so she took the initiative and explained how the two of them had met.

"Ah, so it's you." Wei Zhao finally remembered who the girl before him was. She was the girl who had been standing behind him in the bank yesterday.

"You remember?" Seeing that Wei Zhao had recalled her, Guan Xin was a little pleased.

"Actually, that robber's gun was aimed at me to begin with yesterday. I couldn't let myself dodge a bullet and get someone else killed, so there's no need at all to thank me," Wei Zhao explained. "And you don't need to carry any burden over it either."

"Oh..." Hearing this, Guan Xin did not know what to say. She nodded, and the mood cooled into an awkward silence.

"All right, help me change the dressing." Wei Zhao smiled. "Nice to meet you, pretty nurse."

"My name is Guan Xin." Guan Xin was amused by Wei Zhao, and taking the doctor's orders from his hand, she began to prepare the medicine.

Once Guan Xin had the ointment ready, she saw that Wei Zhao was still standing there, which struck her as rather funny. "What are you still doing? Hurry up and take off your pants!" The moment the words were out, her face flushed red of its own accord.

In truth, treating a wound in that particular place on a man was a first for Guan Xin. In cases like this, Sun Weimin had always handed the work to the married nurses in the department; young nurses like her were assigned the odd scrape or cut on a hand or foot.

But today was different. Wei Zhao counted as her benefactor, and since Sun Weimin had said he would leave Wei Zhao in Guan Xin's hands to "deal with," she had not objected either — and so the matter was settled.

"Uh... that doesn't seem quite appropriate..." Now it was Wei Zhao who grew embarrassed. Yesterday, before he had even taken off his pants, rumors had sprung up about him and Qiu Lingshan; if he took his pants off today, wouldn't that make things even worse?

Seeing a grown man like Wei Zhao squirming instead, Guan Xin stopped feeling shy and found it rather amusing. "I'm a nurse, you know. What do you have to hide from me? You should know that patients have no privacy in front of a doctor. Be a good boy now — off with the pants..."

Having said all that, Guan Xin herself felt her face grow warm. Why did she sound like some lecherous older sister luring a young boy astray?

Wei Zhao broke out in a sweat, but then he let it go. Guan Xin was a nurse; there should be nothing wrong with taking off his pants in front of her. So he undid his belt without further fuss, took off his pants, and sat down on the chair beside them.

"That's... my chair. But go ahead and sit." Seeing Wei Zhao in his underwear sitting in the chair where she usually worked, Guan Xin felt a little embarrassed; but on second thought it was nothing, and she let him be.

Wei Zhao, though, was apologetic. "I didn't know this was your chair... Should I move to another one?"

"Never mind. You've got a wound on your leg — don't go shuffling about." As she spoke, Guan Xin had already crouched down and begun carefully examining the bandage on Wei Zhao's leg.

Wei Zhao looked thin on the outside, but his legs were so muscular — no wonder he had still been able to walk along with the robbers after taking a bullet. Guan Xin marveled to herself.

Guan Xin slowly unwrapped the old bandage, a bit at a time; but the more careful she was, the more nervous she became. Especially with Wei Zhao's underwear bulging there right before her eyes, she felt her breathing quicken.

Her hand gave a slight tremor and brushed against the bulge in Wei Zhao's underwear. Guan Xin was startled, and her face had already gone as red as the sunset in late afternoon.

If Guan Xin was nervous, Wei Zhao was no better off. A pretty girl in a nurse's uniform crouching between his legs could hardly fail to set a man's imagination running.

Luckily Wei Zhao's self-control was fairly good; otherwise, a certain part of him would have made a most untimely response. But that self-control was shattered by Guan Xin's touch...
