Ordinary people might notice nothing of the killing intent on the girl, but Wei Zhao, being in the same line of work, could sense it keenly. It could indeed be called a kind of sixth sense.
Only Wei Zhao had spotted her, while she had not spotted Wei Zhao.
After years of tempering, Wei Zhao had learned to conceal his own killing intent very well, yet those who could reach his level were few and far between.
In the end, Wei Zhao shook his head. The girl's dress clearly showed she did not want attention. Though she was hurt, Wei Zhao had no thought of helping her. Each minded his own business. Even if they might be in the same trade, no one in the trade wished to be disturbed by another while on a mission. What was more, people in the same trade might belong to different organizations, and might even be enemies of each other.
"Excuse me, what is Golden Wound Medicine?" Wei Zhao asked the shop assistant casually.
The assistant froze, then looked at Wei Zhao as if he were an idiot, as though his question were too silly and naive to deserve an answer. "It is a surgical medicine for healing wounds, of course. Even if you want to buy it, there is none in stock."
Wei Zhao gave a wry smile. It seemed it must be some new medicine, and a very popular one at that.
The assistant disdained to answer Wei Zhao's question, but someone was eager to answer for her. Before Wei Zhao could say anything more, an auntie beside him had already launched into an endless chatter.
"Young man, you do not even know Golden Wound Medicine? You know Miracle Doctor Kang, right? Miracle Doctor Kang of a family of Chinese medicine, a towering figure in the world of Chinese medicine!" The auntie began to recount the deeds of Miracle Doctor Kang as if counting her own treasures. "Golden Wound Medicine is a fast-healing medicine put out by Miracle Doctor Kang. It lets a wound recover swiftly, and afterward not even a scar is left. Amazing, is it not?"
"That miraculous?" Wei Zhao had not expected this Doctor Kang to be so capable, actually rivaling the healing medicine he compounded himself.
"Yes, they say it is an ancestral secret formula. This Golden Wound Medicine is supplied to the military first. Because of limited output, only a small amount is released to civilian pharmacies from time to time, so it is very hard to get," the auntie said. "If you hope to buy it in a drugstore, it is all but impossible. My niece's boyfriend's third sister's aunt's fifth cousin is the sales manager of the XX chain pharmacy. Last time I got a bottle only through his connections. I hear the moment stock arrives, it is taken up internally. It never even gets to the shelves."
"Is that so?" Wei Zhao thought to himself. If the medicine were truly as miraculous as this auntie claimed, its popularity would be no surprise.
"Of course! Especially for young girls, how ugly to have a scar on the body. It is not only about healing the wound fast, the main thing is leaving no scar," the auntie said. "I hear nowadays people no longer give platinum or gold as gifts. For gifts, they give Golden Wound Medicine."
"Really?" Wei Zhao listened in a daze, unsure whether what the auntie said was true or false.
"Of course it is true. Would I lie to you?" The auntie put on the lecturing air of one trading on her age.
"Oh, I see. Thank you, but it seems I have no use for it for now." Wei Zhao said to the auntie with a smile.
"True, a strapping young fellow like you has no use for that stuff," the auntie nodded, clearly misunderstanding Wei Zhao. What Wei Zhao meant was that he could compound medicine himself and had no need to buy any.
Wei Zhao naturally offered no explanation, and turned to the counter for Chinese herbs. The herbs he wanted had already been weighed out, each kind placed separately in a sealed bag.
Wei Zhao examined them carefully and found two ingredients seemed to have been stored too long and had gone slightly stale, their potency greatly reduced. Having no choice, Wei Zhao had them weigh out extra, making up in quantity for what they lacked in quality.
He checked the vessels and dispensing tools he had asked for as well, and only after making sure there was nothing wrong did he pack everything carefully and leave the pharmacy.
These days, whether Chinese patent medicines or Western medicines, all sold very well. Only loose herbs like these did not sell briskly in pharmacies, with few buyers. That was also why Wei Zhao had been able to finish his purchase and walk out of the pharmacy so quickly.
Out of the pharmacy, Wei Zhao had no plan to go straight to school. He was already absent, so whether he went or not hardly mattered. Having already bought a full set of measures and tools for compounding, Wei Zhao meant to find a place to prepare the medicine first.
Such work could hardly be done at school, and still less in Gu Mengyao's villa. Fill the whole house with the smell of Chinese medicine and those two girls would go mad. The best way was to rent a room by the hour, finish the job, and leave.
With that idea in mind, Wei Zhao was in no hurry to get to school, and instead wandered around near the pharmacy to see if there was a decent hotel where he could get an hourly room.
"Hm?" At the mouth of a deserted alley, Wei Zhao saw the same girl from the pharmacy. She was now collapsed on the ground, with a pool of bright red blood spreading beneath her.
Wei Zhao frowned. He did not want to meddle, but in this lonely alley, let alone whether anyone else would pass by, even if someone did, who would dare take up such trouble? If the rescue failed and the person died, it would only invite needless trouble.
Wei Zhao hesitated. He was a man with a mission on his shoulders and should not court extra trouble. Moreover, in his line of work, one had to be ready to die at any moment. Though Wei Zhao also knew that if he left her alone, she would likely die of losing too much blood.
But at times, there was truly nothing Wei Zhao could do, especially with something that had nothing to do with him and was so plainly trouble. The girl was clearly no ordinary person. This was meddling Wei Zhao really could not afford.
Gritting his teeth, Wei Zhao strode quickly past the girl. As he passed her fallen body, he could not help casting her a pitying glance. I hope you can pull through on your own, and then he hurried away.
But Wei Zhao had gone only a few steps when he suddenly stopped. Wait.
That last glance had shown Wei Zhao something that looked strangely familiar, though he dared not be sure.
Wei Zhao turned back and walked again to the girl's side, bending down to stare fixedly at a ring on the little finger of her right hand.
When he made out the patterned design upon it, Wei Zhao sighed, quickly felt the pulse at her wrist, and finding there was still a pulse, carefully lifted her from the ground and settled her onto his back.
Though the girl had already lost consciousness from losing too much blood, she still showed some instinctive reaction when Wei Zhao carried her, struggling twice by reflex. Perhaps it was a conditioned response to attack from the outside world.
Seeing no one about, Wei Zhao quickened his pace and ran back the way he had come, carrying the girl on his back.
