Chapter 83 — The Newcomer Among the Four Young Devils
Wei Zhao went upstairs and came to the door of Class Five, Senior Three. He glanced in through the window beside the door: it was a study period, and no teacher was in the room.
Wei Zhao pushed the door open and walked straight in. A good many heads lifted, and once the owners of those heads saw that it was Wei Zhao, they bent back down to their own work. Senior year was a tense time; no one cared to mind anyone else's business.
Shen Yushu poked Gu Mengyao, who sat beside her. "Sister Yaoyao, Shield Bro's here."
"So he's here. What is that to me?" Gu Mengyao frowned, a little displeased by Shen Yushu's reaction. "Xiaoshu, why do you pay him so much attention? Don't tell me you have actually fallen for him."
"A living, breathing person walked into the classroom. I looked up and there he was." Shen Yushu shrugged. "Since he has nothing to do with you, I won't mention him again."
"..." Gu Mengyao opened her mouth, said nothing, shook her head at herself, and went back to the review materials in her hands.
Watching her, Shen Yushu gave a faint smile and turned to her own affairs.
"Xiaoshu, what do you make of this Wei Zhao? He slips off first thing in the morning to have his dressing changed, so how is it he only turns up in the afternoon? He hasn't gone and hooked up with Qiu Lingshan again, has he?" Gu Mengyao suddenly turned her head and asked.
"Huh? I thought you had stopped paying attention to him?" Shen Yushu looked at Gu Mengyao with a smile.
"My daddy paid good money to bring him here as my shield. He is supposed to stay dutifully at my side. If he goes running off and carrying on, of course I am unhappy about it." Gu Mengyao did not know herself why she suspected Wei Zhao, but she had found herself a fine excuse: her father had hired Wei Zhao with money, so he owed it to that pay to behave.
"Then go talk to him. Tell him he is not allowed to be fickle, that he can only be a shield for you." Shen Yushu made the suggestion very casually.
"What do you mean, for me alone?" A flush of red rushed into Gu Mengyao's face. "Xiaoshu, the way you put things is so wicked, so full of double meanings."
"He is yours alone to begin with. It was your daddy who hired him, not mine." Shen Yushu said it as a matter of course. "And if you think that is improper, then let him be my shield too. We may have no use for one in high school anymore, but who knows, we might in university."
"Get out of here. You have your brother. What do you need a shield for?" Gu Mengyao laughed, though she felt vaguely uncomfortable, especially since it was as if Shen Yushu were trying to snatch away something of hers.
When Wei Zhao came into the classroom, Zhong Yongliang shrank his neck out of reflex. His father had already given him a thorough tongue-lashing and told him to behave himself from now on. As he saw it, all of this was Wei Zhao's doing.
But he also knew that with his bare hands he was no match for Wei Zhao. And not bare hands alone: even Brother Panther, with a pistol in his hand, was no match for Wei Zhao. That kid was a monster.
So Zhong Yongliang wanted revenge, and he knew he could no longer use the old, ordinary methods. He was waiting for his chance, a chance to teach Wei Zhao a lesson by other means.
As for Kang Xiaobo, Zhong Yongliang had thought it over carefully after going home yesterday. Since Wei Zhao protected him so fiercely, he might as well let the kid off. If he beat him up and then got beaten up by Wei Zhao in turn, the loss would far outweigh the gain.
"Hey, boss, you are finally here." Kang Xiaobo was thrilled to see Wei Zhao, and the moment Wei Zhao entered the classroom he waved at him.
"What are you doing, sitting there waving? You think you are the president?" Wei Zhao laughed and gave Kang Xiaobo a kick, then sat down in his own seat.
"Boss, you do not know, but Zhong Yongliang has been really low-key today. You were not here, and he did not come after me either," Kang Xiaobo said.
"Is that not a good thing?" Wei Zhao said. "Nothing happened today, then?"
"Nothing. Just yesterday's business. The school put out a brief notice saying some people from outside had come onto campus to make trouble and the police had already detained them." Kang Xiaobo said, "Shit, it is only because Zhong Yongliang's family has connections that the school covers for him. Everyone knows those people were brought in by Zhong Yongliang."
"Heh--" Wei Zhao had already heard about it today from Uncle Qing. Since Zhong Yongliang's uncle was a director of the Gu Group, he was naturally one of the school's shareholders as well, and it was only normal for the school to protect Zhong Yongliang.
"Oh right, boss, guess how everyone is describing you now?" Kang Xiaobo lowered his voice, excited.
"Describing me? Describing me how?" Wei Zhao was a little baffled.
"Boss, you are one of the school's Four Young Devils now. You have replaced Zhong Yongliang and smoothly become the new number three of the Four Young Devils." Kang Xiaobo said it as though he were recounting something to boast about.
"The Four Young Devils?" Wei Zhao felt a chill of revulsion. Since when had he become one of the Four Young Devils? He had always held to the principle of lying low, lower still; he had not even dared perform normally on exams. And this was how he became famous?
And from the look of Kang Xiaobo, becoming one of the Four Young Devils seemed to be a great honor. Wei Zhao was left speechless.
"That is right, boss. If you take down number two as well, then you will be the number two of the Four Young Devils," Kang Xiaobo added.
"Number two?" The black lines on Wei Zhao's face multiplied. The "number two" of the Four Young Devils... that was worse than number three.
But there was nothing Wei Zhao could do about it. After all, the fight with the outsiders yesterday had really happened. Black Panther might have been the one who came to the school to make trouble, but other people would certainly not see it that way; they would surely assume he was the sort of student who loved to brawl. He had taken care of all of Zhong Yongliang's men, so he could well live up to a place among the school's Four Young Devils.
The bell rang for the end of class, cutting off Wei Zhao's talk with Kang Xiaobo. The title of one of the Four Young Devils did not sit well with Wei Zhao, but mouths belonged to other people, and he could not control what they said.
Still, thinking it over, Wei Zhao figured that since his image was what it was, it would go more smoothly when he acted as Gu Mengyao's shield in the future. He would just stand there, and one look would tell anyone, "Who dares cross me," "I am one tough tyrant."
The last period on Friday was the physical activity class. A physical activity class, so called, was a free period: you could go out and move around, or stay in the classroom and study. It was the only relaxing class the senior three students got each week.
Even those classmates who studied themselves to the bone would generally choose to relax in this period, wandering about the school or strolling past the record shop, the snack street, the trinket shops at the school gate.
Gu Mengyao left the classroom together with Shen Yushu. Zhong Yongliang called his two hangers-on and ran out as well. Though he had called a truce with Wei Zhao for the time being, his pursuit of Gu Mengyao had not stopped. He followed them out hoping for a chance to curry favor with her.
