Chapter 99 — The Car Accident Commotion

The Blossom Guardian

"Brother Arrow's gone over there. Shall we go take a look?" Shen Yushu figured that wherever Wei Zhao went, something amusing was bound to follow, so she caught Gu Mengyao by the hand and made to trail after him.

"I'm not going! Go by yourself if you want to!" Gu Mengyao's temper toward Wei Zhao had not yet cooled, and now that she saw him poking his nose into other people's business again, she was naturally none too pleased.

"Oh... never mind, then. Let's go buy clothes." Shen Yushu cast one reluctant glance toward Wei Zhao, then let Gu Mengyao pull her off in the direction of the mall. "Brother Arrow won't be able to find us later, will he?"

"Isn't there a car? If he can't find us, he can just wait beside it." Gu Mengyao's anger had its reasons: a pretty girl stood at the scene of the accident, and Gu Mengyao had seen her too. To watch Wei Zhao charge forward the instant a pretty face appeared was a blow to her pride, and a heavy one at that.

He lived under the same roof with her day in and day out, yet his thoughts were forever on other women. What sort of man was that! Was her charm really so pitifully low? A few days ago it had been Qiu Lingshan, and today it was this stranger...

Catching a glimpse of Wei Zhao exchanging a word with that pretty girl, Gu Mengyao's face darkened several shades further! From the look of it, they seemed to have known each other for ages. No wonder he had been so eager!

Shen Yushu naturally had no idea what was running through Gu Mengyao's mind. Seeing her face so black, she found it rather odd. Was there any call to be this angry? Could it be... that Sister Yaoyao was having her time of the month? Why else would her temper be so strange? Shen Yushu thought wickedly... Mm, possible. Very possible! Tonight she would have to conduct a thorough inspection... hee hee.

Though the accident scene was ringed by layer upon layer of onlookers, squeezing in posed no great difficulty for Wei Zhao. "Make way, all of you with no business here, disperse!"

Wei Zhao shouted as he shoved his way forward.

Those he had jostled, who had been about to grumble a word or two, shut their mouths the moment they heard him, and of their own accord opened a path for him. They took him for a traffic policeman or a hospital worker handling the scene. Who else, after all, would talk like that?

Wei Zhao slipped through without trouble, arriving just in time to see that middle-aged woman pointing at Wang Xinyan's nose and screaming abuse: "I'm telling you, if anything happens to my father, you can just wait to go to prison!"

"Auntie, I told you, I didn't hit him..." Wang Xinyan protested, somewhat aggrieved. "This is a commercial district. My speed wasn't even thirty kilometers an hour. This old gentleman fell down in front of my car by himself. I hadn't even touched him, and I hit the brakes at once!"

"Hmph, he fell right in front of your car. If you didn't hit him, then who did? I'm telling you, this isn't over!" The middle-aged woman glared viciously at Wang Xinyan. "Why are Songshan City's ambulances so slow? Does the health bureau chief want to keep his job? Husband, call the mayor for them..."

"That's enough! Stop shouting!" The middle-aged man shot the woman a glare. "What are you yelling about? Father's old illness flared up again. It has nothing to do with this young lady, so stop making things difficult for her!"

"Oh? So because this little slut is pretty, you don't even care about your own father?" At her husband's words, the middle-aged woman forgot all about cursing Wang Xinyan and turned on him instead. "What, your family's gotten mighty now, so you've forgotten how my father propped you up back then? And you dare to yell at me? And you take that little slut's side?"

"Enough! Huiru, have you made enough of a scene? You know perfectly well what happened here. You were the one who forgot to bring my father's medicine, and now you're shifting the blame onto someone else!" The middle-aged man gave a cold snort, as though he had long since had his fill of his wife.

"Fine! I've been a daughter-in-law to your Liu family for all these years, and this is how you treat me!" A vicious light flashed in Huiru's eyes, and she reached out to claw at Wang Xinyan's face. "You've taken a fancy to this little slut, have you? I'll tear her face to shreds and see whether your heart aches!"

"Smack!" A hand closed tightly around Huiru's wrist, pinning her fast so that she could not move an inch.

"Who? Who's holding me?" Startled, Huiru turned to look at whoever had seized her.

"If she really did hit someone, she'll answer for it." Wei Zhao gave the woman called Huiru a cold glance. From her behavior and her earlier words, it was plain that her background was no ordinary one. She went about things with a recklessness that bordered on lawlessness.

Since Wang Xinyan drove a sports car, her family must be well off, and yet this woman showed not the slightest scruple. That alone proved she feared no trouble she might stir up. And her talk of firing the health bureau chief and telephoning the mayor only confirmed it.

Of course, it was also possible she was merely bluffing, hoping to extort a little more money.

"Who are you? Husband, look at this pretty-faced fellow. He dares to meddle, and he even wants to hit your wife! Liu Tianyi, are you going to do anything about it?" Huiru started shouting again.

"That's enough, young man. This is none of your business, so don't get mixed up in it. Let her go. Striking someone carries legal consequences!" Frowning at Huiru's clamor, Liu Tianyi addressed Wei Zhao.

"Striking her? I'm only stopping her from striking someone else." Wei Zhao sneered, though he released the woman called Huiru all the same. When had he ever feared anyone? Still, he was on a mission now, and there was no telling how long he would have to stay in Songshan City, so he did not care to invite trouble.

Liu Tianyi's old face flushed red at Wei Zhao's words, and he shot his wife a fierce glare. This wife of his — he was utterly helpless against her. Back when the Liu family had fallen on hard times, they had formed a marriage alliance with the Zhangs, his wife's family, and only with the Zhangs' aid had the family's fortunes been preserved.

But his wife, leaning on what had happened back then, rode roughshod over him and left him without a shred of a man's dignity. Yet when he thought that she was, after all, the wife of his youth, who had borne him a handsome son and a beautiful daughter, he swallowed it down.

Only in recent years, as he grew older and his vigor in the bedroom failed him, his wife had begun to suspect that he kept a woman on the side. At the slightest rustle of rumor she would weep and wail... leaving Liu Tianyi with no recourse at all. The moment he grew angry with her, she would dredge up the old days, and even go weeping to his father that he had had a change of heart, which galled him beyond measure.

"Are you all right?" Wei Zhao released Huiru and turned to look at Wang Xinyan. The reason he had come over was that Wang Xinyan had helped him on the train. Though Wei Zhao had not needed the help, he still acknowledged the kindness.

"I'm fine..." Wang Xinyan shook her head... Several times she had wanted to take out her phone and call someone, but on second thought she let it go. She had slipped out of the house this time to go shopping in secret. If her parents found out, they would likely scold her to death.
