Chapter 100 — Stepping In to Save a Life
Wang Xinyan was not afraid of them herself. This had never been her fault to begin with, and even if her father and grandfather came to know of it in the end, it would matter little. At worst she would take a scolding, and the matter could still be settled. But now that Wei Zhao was getting drawn into it, it would be troublesome indeed if these people turned on Wei Zhao.
Wang Xinyan was just about to say something to Wei Zhao when she saw that he had already turned away.
Wei Zhao gave a nod. Say what one would, he was already entangled in this mess, so he had to find a way to get Wang Xinyan clear of it. The man called Liu Tianyi seemed to have some sense of reason, but the woman called Huiru had fastened herself onto Wang Xinyan and would not let go.
Wei Zhao glanced at the old man lying on the ground. There was no trace of external injury on his body, nor any obvious scrape on the front of Wang Xinyan's car. Just as Wang Xinyan had said, she had likely never struck the old man at all. He had fallen to the ground by himself.
The old man's right hand pressed against his chest as he lay in a twisted posture, yet after a couple of glances Wei Zhao had roughly discerned the cause. It must have been a heart ailment of some sort that had flared and brought him down, not a collision. Wang Xinyan's car happening to pass by was nothing but coincidence.
Wei Zhao stooped and set his fingers to the old man's wrist.
"What are you doing? Don't touch him! Are you trying to kill my father?" Huiru had been quiet for barely a moment, and the instant she saw Wei Zhao lay hands on the old man, she exploded again and rushed at Wei Zhao with teeth bared and claws out.
"Myocardial ischemia? Angina?" Wei Zhao knitted his brows and lifted his head.
"Huiru, stop making a scene!" At Wei Zhao's words, Liu Tianyi's eyes brightened at once. He seized his wife and pulled her aside, his face full of hope. He was no fool. Wei Zhao had spoken his father's ailment after merely feeling his pulse, so Liu Tianyi naturally took Wei Zhao for a doctor. "Little brother, are you a doctor?"
Wei Zhao did not answer Liu Tianyi's question directly. "Your father fell because angina was triggered by myocardial ischemia. He was not hit by her car."
"You are talking nonsense!" Huiru's expression changed as she pointed at Wei Zhao and cursed him.
"Fine, say I am talking nonsense. With the ambulance coming at this pace, your old father can just wait to die." Wei Zhao curled his lip and rose to his feet. "In any case, once he is dead there will be a forensic examination, and it will have nothing to do with my friend."
With a crisp smack, Liu Tianyi slapped Huiru hard across the face. "You wretched woman, shut your mouth! If you had not been so busy with your makeup before we left and had remembered to bring Father's medicine as I told you, would he be like this?"
"You... you dare hit me?" Disbelief filled Huiru's eyes. Her husband had been meek as a lamb before her for most of his life, yet today he had struck her across the face in public.
Liu Tianyi paid his wife no heed at all and turned to Wei Zhao with sincere eyes. "Little brother, can you save my father? Yes, you surely can. My wife is just this way, please do not take offense. I beg you to lend your aid..."
Liu Tianyi was not a reckless man. Though Wei Zhao was young, to name his father's sudden illness in a single sentence could be no ordinary feat. With no emergency medicine at hand, whether his father could even last until the ambulance arrived was an open question, so Liu Tianyi could only treat a dying horse as if it might yet live. Having glimpsed a thread of hope, he would naturally not let it slip.
Wei Zhao studied Liu Tianyi and judged him to be sincere enough, and that slap he had given his wife had been manly enough as well, so Wei Zhao slowly nodded. "I will try."
If this old man died, it would have nothing to do with Wang Xinyan, yet judging by this shrew's manner, the troubles to follow would be endless. If Wang Xinyan was to be rid of this entanglement for good, the only way was to keep the old man from dying.
Wei Zhao crouched down and rubbed back and forth a few times over several places on the old man's body as if at random, then began to massage around the heart. This craft of striking points and massage had come down to him from his master and served to quicken the circulation of the blood, though whether it would work on this old man he could not say...
His master would likely never have imagined that the point-striking skill taught for killing would be used by him to save a life...
It would have been better had he silver needles. Old Wei of his family was a brilliant physician and had passed on to him a superb art of acupuncture, but Wei Zhao's trade was killing, not healing, so he carried no case of silver needles on his person.
"Boy, rubbing him like that is futile. The man is already half dead. Before your massage can take effect, he will be gone." Suddenly, Jiao Yazi's scornful voice sounded in Wei Zhao's ear.
"Old Jiao? You have a way?" Wei Zhao rejoiced at once. In truth, Wei Zhao himself was uneasy. Though Old Wei's medicine was exquisite, much of his emergency treatment called for silver needles, and it depended on the symptoms besides. Had the old man just fallen ill, Wei Zhao would still have been confident of pulling him through, but the attack had dragged on for so long that Wei Zhao could only treat a dying horse as if it might yet live.
"Hmph, you have cultivated the Xuanyuan Dragon-Slaying Art for ten years. Was it all for nothing?" Jiao Yazi snorted coldly. "The energy you draw into your body, you need only part with a tiny sliver and send it into this old man's heart muscle. Let the muscle revive and strengthen its supply of blood, and his present condition will improve."
"Inject energy directly?" Wei Zhao froze. This was something he had never imagined. He had always supposed the energy elements drawn into his body were of use only to himself, because he cultivated the Xuanyuan Dragon-Slaying Art, and that such energy would be useless to others. "He has never cultivated the Xuanyuan Dragon-Slaying Art. Will this kind of energy do him any good?"
Wei Zhao knew this kind of energy had a strikingly potent effect in fortifying the tissues and functions of the body, but without the guidance of the proper method, would it serve any purpose?
"He has never trained, so he cannot absorb the energy himself, but what you pass to him he can receive." Jiao Yazi explained. "Boy, surely you understand even so simple a principle?"
"This..." Wei Zhao flushed red. He truly did not understand such things. Old Wei did not know the Xuanyuan Dragon-Slaying Art either, and he had been left to train doggedly all on his own, without a single soul to consult.
"Circulate the heart chant upon this old man's Dadun point, and the energy will release and pass over of itself." Jiao Yazi said. "If you do not want him to die, begin at once!"
"Understood!" Wei Zhao's heart tightened, and he hastened to carry out the rescue as Jiao Yazi bade him. As for the Dadun point, Wei Zhao had learned to tell the points apart under his master's urging since childhood, and knew them as well as well could be.
