The Blossom Guardian

Even now, Wei Zhao still had no idea what he was actually supposed to do.

Besides, when he had ridden in the car yesterday morning, Kang had already spotted him and grown suspicious. If this went on, trouble was bound to follow. He himself did not care much, but whether those two young girls would object was quite another matter.

So after making breakfast for Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu, Wei Zhao left them a note, saying he had something to do and had left early, and would not be taking Uncle Qing's car.

Once out of the villa district, Wei Zhao really found himself at a loss about which way to go. He looked left and right, yet could not spot a single taxi. He was left speechless. Sure enough, this was a villa district. Which family living here did not own several cars? It would be strange indeed if any taxi waited here for fares.

With no other choice, Wei Zhao set off on foot. After walking a long way to the street crossing, he finally found a bus stop.

Only one route served this stop, a so-called City Loop Tour Bus that ran the ring road. He scanned the station names posted there and found no Songshan City No.1 High School among them. It seemed he could only board first and ask, and change buses halfway if he had to.

The City Loop Tour Bus came quickly enough, arriving before long. Wei Zhao got on, paid the fare, and asked the driver. Sure enough, there was no stop at Songshan City No.1 High School, and it was not even on the same line. He would have to transfer to Bus No.87 at Jingtai Market to reach Songshan City No.1 High School.

There were not many people on the City Loop Tour Bus. Presumably the bus did not go anywhere important, and the fare was steep. While other buses cost one yuan, this one cost three.

When they reached Jingtai Market, Wei Zhao got off and checked the platform, where sure enough there was a route sign for Bus No.87. Compared with the villa district stop where there had not been a soul, here a great crowd waited for buses, men and women, old and young, all looking like workers and students.

Every time a bus pulled in, a crowd squeezed aboard, yet the number of people on the platform never seemed to lessen. For all those who got on, just as many newcomers kept arriving to wait.

After waiting a while, a No.87 bus finally came. Wei Zhao followed the crowd aboard. The passengers were clearly several times more numerous than on the loop bus before. He found a spot by the door and did not push his way inside. Who knew how many more would board later? If he could not get off at his stop, that would be miserable.

The bus stopped at "Shantytown". This was one of the old quarters in the city that had not yet been redeveloped, inhabited mostly by the poor and made up entirely of flat-roofed houses. Wei Zhao glanced out the window and was surprised to catch sight of Tang Yun.

In her neat school uniform with a small canvas satchel slung across her shoulder, she stood slim and graceful. Under the morning sun, a leaf-shaped hairpin in her dark lustrous hair glittered with rainbow light. She looked very much like a beautiful girl straight out of a comic, full of a strong school spirit, and Wei Zhao's eyes lit up at the sight, seized by an urge to draw closer to her.

Tang Yun was indeed waiting to take the No.87 as well, though she boarded through the front door. Once on, she tried desperately to squeeze toward the middle, but the bus was too crowded. How much strength could a girl like her have? After a few failed attempts, she only earned cold stares from the passengers ahead. If she had not been such a pretty girl, they might have cursed her outright.

"Why run? Where can you run to? I caught you at last. Why are you not running now?"

Wei Zhao was still wondering why Tang Yun pushed inward the moment she boarded when he suddenly heard a buzz-cut young loafer behind her teasing her, and even starting to get handsy.

Though the carriage was noisy and they were far apart, one at the front door and one at the rear, Wei Zhao's hearing was extraordinarily sharp, and with his attention fixed on Tang Yun, he naturally heard every word.

He frowned. Tang Yun had evidently been pestered by a street punk. In this old quarter, idle young drifters hanging about was only too common. Judging by his tone, he had been harassing Tang Yun for more than a day or two. So even a beauty had her troubles! A commoner school belle, though still a belle, lived a life utterly different from that of the two young misses Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu. Gu Mengyao had only to worry about Zhong Yongliang's harassment, never about being pestered by such punks, while Tang Yun was another story. Being beautiful, she had probably long been eyed by the jobless idlers nearby.

Since he had run into this, Wei Zhao would naturally not stand by.

He swiftly parted the crowd in front of him, bringing his nimble skill and boundless strength fully into play. Before those he brushed aside could grasp what was happening, Wei Zhao had already pushed through. By then the bus had finished boarding and the doors were about to close. Wei Zhao braced the closing door with his left hand, holding it open by sheer force, seized the petty thug behind Tang Yun with his other hand, and without a word hurled him straight out the doorway. Then he released his left hand, and the doors shut.

Tang Yun stared in amazement as Wei Zhao squeezed over from the back of the bus and threw the young man who had been harassing her off the vehicle. For a moment she was stunned and at a loss, unable to understand how Wei Zhao could have appeared on this bus.

Tang Yun even thought her eyes were playing tricks on her. How could she be seeing this wretch? Was he not chauffeured to and from school every day?

Only when Wei Zhao had tossed the young man off the bus and turned his head did Tang Yun believe that the man before her really was Wei Zhao.

"How did you get tangled up with someone like that?" Wei Zhao asked, turning his head.

Tang Yun pursed her lips, not knowing how to answer. Was this not asking what he already knew? She wanted to say, why you pester me is why they do... Yet she did not quite dare. Wei Zhao was even more frightening than that young punk just now. What kind of man was he? With one hand he could stop the bus doors from closing, and with the other he could lift a man and throw him out...

No wonder Zhong Yongliang and Zou Ruoming did not dare to provoke him. This fellow was simply a violent maniac.

Everyone on the bus looked at Wei Zhao with some terror. Those he had shoved past had meant to complain, but seeing how fierce he was, throwing a man straight off the bus, they sensibly shut their mouths. No one wanted to become the next flying man.

The driver had wanted to grumble a few words about Wei Zhao nearly breaking the doors, but now he dared not say more. Who would want to provoke such a tough man? He silently started the bus and, ignoring the young man sprawled on his backside on the platform, drove straight off...

That young man had not even seen clearly what had happened before he found himself flying out the door. By the time he hit the ground, the doors had closed, and he had no idea who had thrown him out.
