Chapter 137 — So It Was You: Wei Zhao Watched Tang Yun Run Away and Took Out His Phone to Call Yang Huaijun
"Old Yang, where are you?" The call went through quickly, and Wei Zhao asked.
"I'm in Wangjia Alley behind First High School... Hey, Wei Zhao, what did you just call me? Old Yang? That sounds so awkward to my ears?" Yang Huaijun said, "Call me Junzi or Hound, anything but Old Yang. Do I look that old to you?"
"All right, then I'll call you Brother Jun. Out here I'm younger than you, so calling you Junzi doesn't sound right." Wei Zhao said, "I'm here, at the bus stop platform right in front of the main gate of First High School."
"I'll be right over." Yang Huaijun said.
Not long after, a police car pulled up in front of Wei Zhao, and Yang Huaijun stuck his head out of the window. "Wei Zhao, get in!"
Wei Zhao nodded and settled into the passenger seat. Yang Huaijun eased the car forward. "No kidding, that medicine you gave me really works. After taking it for one day, there was no pain at night!"
"Do you think it's some miracle cure? Do you think I'm some immortal? Cured in one day?" Wei Zhao smiled wryly. "It's all in your head, isn't it?"
"Heh, maybe a little, but it really has eased up a lot. I can fall asleep now without taking the painkiller you gave me." Yang Huaijun said, "It's still somewhat agonizing, though."
"That sounds about right..." Some relief was only to be expected, or all his work preparing the medicine would have been for nothing, but to claim a cure in a single day was nonsense, and Wei Zhao himself did not believe it. "But why didn't you take the painkiller?"
"I figured I would just tough it out. Besides, isn't it bad to keep taking painkillers?" Yang Huaijun explained.
"Who told you that..." Wei Zhao was at a loss for words. "There are no side effects. It's just there to help you... Well, if you insist on gritting your teeth through it, suit yourself."
"Damn it, why didn't you say so sooner..." Yang Huaijun cried out in regret. Although the pain last night had lessened, it was only by a little, and forcing himself to sleep through it had still been miserable.
"Heh..." Wei Zhao shrugged. "I thought Hound would not be that dumb."
"You little brat!" Yang Huaijun could only chalk it up to bad luck. "By the way, has Xiao Song come looking for you?"
"Xiao Song? Qiu Lingshan?" Wei Zhao guessed that the Xiao Song Yang Huaijun meant must be Qiu Lingshan. "What would she want with me?"
"Isn't it all about that bank robbery case? She can't find the suspects, and she has already made a pledge to the chief to crack the case within fifteen days..." Yang Huaijun smiled bitterly. "She asked me for help, and I had no good ideas, so I recommended you to her. You won't blame me, will you?"
"No, I won't. You want me to help her find the men?" Wei Zhao narrowed his eyes. Even if Yang Huaijun had said nothing, he would have had to settle this matter sooner or later. Since Gu Pengzhan had made it plain that Gu Mengyao was a vital link in his mission, if anything happened to her, his whole mission would be shot to hell, so naturally Wei Zhao had to snuff out every such threat.
They were only a few bank robbers, and Wei Zhao did not take them seriously at all. They were small fry, best left for the police to handle. What concerned Wei Zhao was the Brother Cihua behind them. Just who was that man?
"Everyone in the squad knows that no enemy you set your sights on ever gets away! Prey marked by the Eagle rarely escapes." Yang Huaijun said with a laugh, "Xiao Song is pretty pitiful too. After transferring from the army to local work, she has been eager to make something of herself and win recognition, only to run into such a thorny case."
"Heh, I find you are overflowing with sympathy." Wei Zhao said with a laugh after hearing that.
"Can't help it. Do this job long enough and see enough messy business, and you get sentimental." Yang Huaijun nodded. "Whatever is or isn't going on between you two, I've said all I should say. You decide for yourself."
"Then we'll talk when she comes to me. At any rate, she hasn't come to me yet." Wei Zhao said.
The car drove into Songshan Medical and Pharmaceutical University and headed straight for the family villa district.
"Is the man treating you from this university?" Wei Zhao suddenly thought of someone, Guan Xuemin, who had given him his card in the bookstore. He seemed to be the dean of some school in this very university, and Wei Zhao wondered whether Yang Huaijun might know him. "Yes, a very formidable old gentleman, highly renowned at home and abroad. But when he saw the prescription you gave me... especially when he heard my condition had improved after drinking your Chinese medicine, he got so excited he could hardly contain himself. He cleared his whole schedule this morning and is waiting at home for you to come... making me feel like some big shot." Hearing Yang Huaijun's words, Wei Zhao smiled. "Then let's hurry, and not keep the old gentleman waiting."
Wei Zhao held old men of that sort in deep respect. Even if their medical skill might not match his own, that was only for want of guidance from the right teacher. Old Wei of his own family was practically a treasure trove of Chinese medicine. They said he had spent most of his life in the Miao frontier of Yunnan, weaving gu sorcery together with Chinese medicine and bacteriology, and it was during those years that he had met Wei Zhao's master...
The old man seldom spoke of that history, only mumbling a few words when drunk, but it was plain to see that he and Wei Zhao's master were friends who had faced life and death together. So the fact that he himself knew medicine and was so skilled with his hands... was entirely thanks to a stroke of great luck. Without such an old man and such a remarkable master, he would have been nothing but an ordinary fellow.
After the same careful registration at the gate, the car entered the compound and stopped in front of a villa.
"We're here. This is it." Yang Huaijun got out first and rang the doorbell of the villa.
Wei Zhao followed behind, sizing up the surrounding villas. Clearly, anyone who could live here ranked high in both status and achievement!
Before long the villa door opened. Although the door could have been operated by remote without anyone coming in person, this time the owner had come downstairs himself to open it, standing there with solemn ceremony, his face full of reverence and gravity.
"Huh?" Wei Zhao stared in surprise at the owner standing before him... and the owner, on first catching sight of Wei Zhao, also froze for a moment before an expression of disbelief spread across his face!
"You... you are..." Guan Xuemin stared at the young man before him in disbelief.
"Heh... Old Guan, it's me. We met in the bookstore!" Wei Zhao said with a polite smile. "How do you do, Old Guan, and sorry to trouble you to come greet me in person..."
"So it was you... I thought as much..." Guan Xuemin looked at Wei Zhao and said in shock. "Back then, this old man underestimated you... I really am sorry. Whether you study at my College of Chinese Medicine or not hardly matters now..."
"Grandpa Guan, what is this... you and Wei Zhao?" Yang Huaijun was stunned too. What act were these two putting on? It looked as if they had known each other for a long time!
