Chapter 150 — In a Very Bad Mood: Watching Wei Zhao Walk Back to His Room, Gu Mengyao Was Nearly in Tears... She Had Never Been So Wronged in All Her Life
"Wei Zhao, aren't you just wonderful? Keep your distance, then, keep your distance! Who needs you!" Gu Mengyao shouted after Wei Zhao's retreating figure, her voice tearing itself raw. "From now on, your affairs are none of my business!"
That said, Gu Mengyao sank onto the sofa as if drained of every drop of strength, aggrieved and bereft all at once, and at last could not hold back her tears... yet, afraid that Shen Yushu might hear, she could only weep in silence.
"Sister Yaoyao, what's wrong?" Shen Yushu had noticed something off about Gu Mengyao. There was no teasing in her now; she took Gu Mengyao's hand. "Sister Yaoyao, don't cry..."
"Who's crying? I'm not crying!" Of course Gu Mengyao would never admit that she had wept over so baffling a man. His good points, his bad ones — what had any of it to do with her?
So what if he had saved her once? What of it? When she was small, Uncle Qing had saved her too!
And yet Wei Zhao and Uncle Qing... Every time she recalled the instant Wei Zhao had stepped forward to stand beside her as a hostage, warmth rose in Gu Mengyao's heart. In that moment she had felt herself a very fortunate girl, to have a man willing to descend into the grave with her. But now...
"Sister Yaoyao, I know you like Brother Arrow... How about I go and talk to him for you?" By now Shen Yushu could read a little of what was in Gu Mengyao's heart. The two had grown up together; no one understood Gu Mengyao's thoughts better than she did.
Nine chances out of ten, Gu Mengyao had truly fallen for him. The hero-saves-the-beauty routine was vulgar, true enough, but it was also the most classic of all plots, the one people never tired of retelling. Shen Yushu could see that ever since Wei Zhao had rescued Gu Mengyao, her attitude toward him had begun to shift...
These little details Gu Mengyao might never have noticed herself, but Shen Yushu, watching from the sidelines, could feel the difference in them.
"Xiaoshu, what nonsense are you talking? Who likes him?" Gu Mengyao panicked and leapt up from the sofa, her voice going shrill. "I don't like him. I've said it ten thousand times, I don't like him. Don't you dare talk nonsense!"
Shen Yushu had never seen Gu Mengyao react so violently. Startled, she hurried to say, "I won't say it, I won't say it, all right? Sister Yaoyao, we won't like him, is that not enough..."
"..." Gu Mengyao was spent. She clung to Shen Yushu, somewhat wronged. "Xiaoshu, you're the one who's good to me, the one who's always at my side..."
"Mm, I'll always be with you." Shen Yushu nodded and patted Gu Mengyao's shoulder in comfort.
It was not that Wei Zhao had not heard Gu Mengyao's shouting — it was that he did not know how to answer it. The hand that closed the door quivered slightly, and he let out a faint sigh.
He could not quite fathom the young miss's mind, but from the way she had behaved today, she seemed a little jealous. Could it be that the young miss had feelings for him?
Wei Zhao was at a loss. All along, he and Gu Mengyao had seemed to stand on opposite sides. Even if he had saved her life, surely that did not mean love at first sight?
Besides, even if it were love at first sight, Wei Zhao would not dare make off with the young miss. That was the great taboo of his trade — to fall in love with one's employer was to play with fire and burn oneself to ashes.
Wei Zhao shook his head. The young miss was having one of her fits today, and he did not dare cross her. That evening, when Uncle Qing came with the food, Wei Zhao did not leave his room.
Gu Mengyao vented the grievance in her heart to Shen Yushu for a while and felt a little better. Seeing Uncle Qing arrive, she forced her spirits up and went to help carry the dishes. Uncle Qing, finding no sign of Wei Zhao, was rather puzzled: "Miss Gu, is Mr. Wei not in?"
"Dead, probably." Gu Mengyao was out of sorts, and so she did not bother to mince words. Uncle Qing had watched her grow up, after all, and knew her temper well.
"Dead?" Uncle Qing smiled wryly. He guessed that Wei Zhao and Gu Mengyao had had another misunderstanding. But in such matters it was hard for him to put in a word. He was only a head steward at Gu Pengzhan's side, and Gu Pengzhan's attitude concerning Wei Zhao and the young miss was obscure and ambiguous at best, so Uncle Qing was all the less willing to be drawn into it.
Having helped the two young ladies set out the food, Uncle Qing knew this was no place to linger, and so took his leave first, going out of the villa.
After Uncle Qing left, only Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu remained in the vast villa. There had been two of them before; after Wei Zhao came, it had become three.
Unknowingly, Gu Mengyao had grown used to Wei Zhao coming out to help when Uncle Qing delivered the food — the three of them setting the dishes on the table, and then Wei Zhao going back to his room to wait until she and Xiaoshu had finished eating before he came out again.
Gu Mengyao wanted to call Wei Zhao out to eat with them, but pride stopped her, time and again. Little had she expected that their relationship would not only fail to thaw, but would be frozen all the harder by today's affair.
She stared listlessly at the table, at the few homely dishes that were her favorites. She had no appetite at all; after two bites she set down her chopsticks.
"Sister Yaoyao, what's the matter?" Shen Yushu looked at the somewhat haggard Gu Mengyao. "How about I call Brother Arrow out and we eat together?"
"I don't want to eat. No appetite." Gu Mengyao shook her head. "What call him out for? Let's just pretend there's no such person in this house..." Yet all unknowing, Gu Mengyao had already counted Wei Zhao as one of the villa's own — only she herself had never noticed it.
"Oh." Shen Yushu lowered her head and ate. The food today was truly delicious, she thought — there was even papaya and pork rib soup. Mm, they said it made your breasts grow. But hers seemed nicely proportioned already, and a bit fuller than most, so there was no need to grow them any further, was there? To end up like Qiu Lingshan, that dairy cow, would hardly be a pretty sight... heh heh...
Still, Sister Yaoyao ought to grow hers a little, Shen Yushu thought — she was taller than her, and yet not as full. "Xiaoshu, what are you doing?" Seeing Shen Yushu wolfing down her food with a grin at the corner of her mouth, pleased beyond measure, Gu Mengyao was suddenly furious. "How can you be so heartless? I'm in this state, and you're eating so happily? Are you trying to make me die of anger on purpose?"
"Uh, oh." Shen Yushu gulped down a piece of rib meat and nearly choked on it. "I... I was just a little hungry..."
"No more eating. Come out shopping with me!" Gu Mengyao was in a foul mood and did not want to stay at home.
"All right." Shen Yushu set down her chopsticks and cast a reluctant glance at the feast on the table.
"There's good food outside too. At worst I'll buy you deep-fried mushrooms in gutter oil!" Seeing Shen Yushu so utterly without backbone, Gu Mengyao gave her an exasperated glare.
"..." Shen Yushu was speechless. The way you put it, how am I supposed to eat another bite? Gutter oil? Is it really that disgusting?
"Come on, upstairs to change!" Gu Mengyao dragged Shen Yushu up the stairs. What the two were wearing was not school uniform, but it leaned toward a student-like, academy style, and was a bit unsuitable for going out at night.
