Chapter 175 — Wei Zhao's Search Method
"Your sister-in-law? Who is your brother? Captain Yang's sister-in-law? And who is Captain Yang's brother?" Qiu Lingshan was left dizzy by Wei Zhao's roundabout talk.
"I call Yang Huaijun Brother Jun." Wei Zhao said with a smile.
"You call him Brother Jun..." Qiu Lingshan suddenly understood what Wei Zhao had meant before. He called Captain Yang Brother Jun, so was Captain Yang not his brother? Then was he not Captain Yang's younger brother?
Qiu Lingshan's face flushed red in an instant. "Are you asking for trouble? Believe it or not, I will kick you right out of the car?"
Qiu Lingshan had retired from the special forces, and no one had ever dared to tease her like this. Wei Zhao was the first, and it was not even the first time. This left her burning with anger. Was this kid sent from heaven just to oppose her on purpose?
"Ms. Song, I am only telling the truth. What goes on between Brother Jun and me can only be told to one of our own, so if you want to know, take your pick. If not, then drive your car properly." Wei Zhao was really only joking, hoping to shut Qiu Lingshan up for good. The more she asked, the harder it would be to avoid a slip, and he had no wish to continue on this topic.
"If you won't tell, then don't. No need for so many excuses." Qiu Lingshan snorted and kept driving. By now the car was approaching the woods ahead, and once at the foot of the mountain, it could go no farther.
At the foot of the mountain, the police had put up a cordon, and several officers on duty were holding their post in a temporary shelter. Seeing Qiu Lingshan's car approach, they hurried out.
Qiu Lingshan parked the car at the foot of the mountain and got out together with Wei Zhao.
"Captain Song!" An officer ran over, saluted, and spoke to Qiu Lingshan.
"Anything to report?" Qiu Lingshan asked.
"No," the officer shook his head. "No one has gone up the mountain from here, and no one has come down."
"Good. Get back to work. I will go up and take a look." Qiu Lingshan held out little hope.
"Captain Song, you are going up alone?" The officer glanced at Wei Zhao in surprise... Could this be Captain Song's legendary boyfriend, the one who could not wait in the hospital, that one?
Well, the young man looked decent enough, and sturdy too... But Captain Song going up the mountain with him, what was that about? The robbers were still up there, after all. This was hardly a good place for romance.
"Wei Zhao and I are going up together." Qiu Lingshan said, pointing at Wei Zhao.
Sure enough. The officer recalled that Qiu Lingshan's rumored boyfriend seemed to be named Wei Zhao. It looked like this man really was Captain Song's legendary boyfriend. But what on earth were they going up the mountain for at a time like this?
"Well... Captain Song, be careful. Do you want a few of our men to follow behind you?" The officer was uneasy. Though Qiu Lingshan was deputy captain, she was still a woman.
"No need." Qiu Lingshan would never allow anyone to follow. Since Wei Zhao had said only the two of them would go up, bringing others would only show weakness before him.
Seeing Qiu Lingshan insist, the officer could only step aside and watch her and Wei Zhao head up the mountain.
"Your people in the force seem to care about you." Wei Zhao was rather surprised. "Looks like you command quite some respect."
"What did you expect?" Qiu Lingshan rolled her eyes and glared at Wei Zhao. "I am the women's freestyle combat champion of the whole provincial police system."
As she said this, Qiu Lingshan proudly thrust out her chest a little. It was an honor worth boasting about.
"Heh, you are first in other areas too." Wei Zhao said with a wicked grin, eyeing her proud figure.
"Hey? Wei Zhao, do you want to die?" Qiu Lingshan caught his gaze and that ill-intentioned smile. How could she not know what he meant?
"Being women's combat champion does not mean you can beat men." Wei Zhao shook his head. "At least, I can see you are no match for Yang Huaijun."
"So what? I am indeed no match for Captain Yang, but handling you would be child's play." Qiu Lingshan gave him a contemptuous look. "You can look down on me if you want, as long as you are stronger than me."
"Heh..." Wei Zhao shrugged. "We will have a match when we get the chance."
"Fine, who is afraid of whom? I will leave you utterly convinced." Qiu Lingshan curled her lip, naturally not believing Wei Zhao could be that formidable. Anyone could brag.
Once up the mountain, Qiu Lingshan watched Wei Zhao wander aimlessly among the hills, with no idea what he was up to. At first she followed him around, but after circling for a long time, she still could not tell what he was really trying to do.
For Wei Zhao was walking back and forth with no purpose or method at all, and Qiu Lingshan could finally stand it no longer. He would walk over here, then walk back again, retracing ground he had just covered. What was he thinking? Was he toying with her?
"What exactly are you doing? You keep pacing around, but I don't see you looking for the robbers. What do you want?" Qiu Lingshan stopped in her tracks.
"I am searching." Wei Zhao frowned slightly. "If you don't understand, don't interrupt. If you want me to search, shut up and follow me. Otherwise I am going down."
"You... Fine, then search. I won't talk." Qiu Lingshan was furious. She had only asked a question, only to be scolded by Wei Zhao. Very well, she would see for herself whether his way of searching could possibly find the robbers. When he failed, they would settle old scores and new together. Did he not want a contest? Fine, right then.
Wei Zhao had no time to care what Qiu Lingshan thought, his attention fixed at every moment on the changes in his jade pendant. Even he was not absolutely sure the pendant would give warning when they neared those robbers.
After all, the enemies he had found on the battlefield with the pendant's help had all borne him deep hatred, wishing him dead without delay. These robbers, by contrast, had only harbored brief ill intent toward him at the very start.
Qiu Lingshan swallowed her anger and followed Wei Zhao as he roamed through the woods, saying little. Wherever Wei Zhao went, she went. For now she held her temper in check, waiting until he truly failed to find anyone. That would be the time for a final reckoning.
Qiu Lingshan even began to doubt why Captain Yang had introduced such a man to her. Though her investigative skills were not as sharp as Yang Huaijun's, she still understood basic methods and techniques.
After all, she had served so long as an instructor for the special forces. Though she had only taught combat techniques, she knew something of reconnaissance. Wei Zhao's search had no method whatsoever, as if he were relying on sheer luck.
Just as she thought this, she suddenly saw Wei Zhao stride toward the cliff. Qiu Lingshan hurried after him. "What are you doing? That is a sheer cliff. There is no road there!"
Wei Zhao said nothing, and kept striding quickly toward the cliff.
