Chapter 204 — Very Sly

The Blossom Guardian

"Hee hee, Sister Yaoyao, come tonight and you'll be the one making a confession, gah-gah..." Shen Yushu snickered from inside the bathroom. She had found the perfect hiding place long before she even proposed the game of hide-and-seek, confident that Gu Mengyao would never be able to find her in a hurry.

Only with such a certain edge did she dare to put up such a juicy prize, for she believed that victory was hers and defeat was Gu Mengyao's.

After waiting a while, her phone buzzed. Seeing Gu Mengyao's number, Shen Yushu hung up without a second thought and stepped out of the bathroom.

Once outside, she did not rush to search for Gu Mengyao's hiding place. Instead, she stood in the living room and began to survey the scene. Though this was Gu Mengyao's home, Shen Yushu had been staying over regularly since the age of fourteen, and she knew this villa more intimately than almost anything else.

Gu Mengyao's hiding spot could never be one of those ordinary places, nor just some corner of a room; every corner she knew, Shen Yushu knew too, and Shen Yushu would naturally check each one in turn.

So, reasoning backward from Gu Mengyao's likely thoughts, Shen Yushu was in no hurry to chase down those corners. Gu Mengyao couldn't possibly be cowering in one of them, waiting to be discovered.

Looking toward the door of Wei Zhao's room, a sly smile curved across the corner of Shen Yushu's lips.

Earlier, during the concert, Wei Zhao's door had been half open. She hadn't deliberately meant to peek into his room; but when they had talked about "confessing" to Brother Arrow, she had felt a twinge of guilt and instinctively glanced in, which was how she remembered the look of that door.

But now that door was completely closed. If Gu Mengyao wasn't hidden in the room, where else could she possibly be?

Shen Yushu crept on tiptoe to Wei Zhao's door, then suddenly flung it open and said with a laugh, "Yaoyao, come on out—I've already spotted you!"

After saying this, she had an air of total self-assurance, just waiting for Gu Mengyao to appear from the room. But she waited and waited, and no sign of Gu Mengyao came out. Shen Yushu began to feel a little anxious...

"Yaoyao, no more hiding—out you come!" She stepped into the room as she spoke.

Wei Zhao's room was no stranger to her. She had come in once before, when Wei Zhao had been changing his pants... and she'd ended up with cheeks burning red.

Her eyes scanned the room quickly. There, on the writing desk, sat her own computer. Under the desk... no one. Under the bed... there was simply no way to hide a person.

Inside the wardrobe... nearly empty, just two or three newly bought clothes of Wei Zhao's hanging there. The private bathroom... not a single person inside, though two pairs of his underpants hung from the drying rack.

"Huh?" Shen Yushu was puzzled. Where was Sister Yaoyao? How could she have vanished? Could she become invisible?

Unwilling to give up, she searched the room several more times, but still found no trace of Gu Mengyao. A little deflated, she thought... could it be that Gu Mengyao really was not in this room?

While Shen Yushu was still puzzled, her phone vibrated again. She took it out—Gu Mengyao's number. She answered in resignation: "Yaoyao, where are you?"

"Xiaoshu, the ten minutes are up—and you didn't find me!" Gu Mengyao's voice came through the receiver, brimming with self-satisfaction.

"Yaoyao, where the heck did you hide?" As she said this, Shen Yushu looked left and right around the room, trying to pinpoint the source of the voice. But after listening a while, she found nothing. Gu Mengyao was definitely not speaking from inside this room.

"I'm in our bedroom, of course. I lay down on the bed for a while, just waiting for you to come find me!" Gu Mengyao said lazily, clearly trying to irritate Shen Yushu.

"Uh..." Shen Yushu nearly dropped the phone. "You're in the bedroom? But I saw Brother Arrow's door closed!"

"Oh... that. I closed it casually as I went by." Gu Mengyao spoke as if it were nothing. "I was afraid there might be valuables in his room, and if we broke something during the hide-and-seek, he'd end up blaming us!"

"Uh..." Shen Yushu had never imagined this was the reason Gu Mengyao shut the door. How could she be such a schemer? This was plainly setting her up to be fooled. "Yaoyao, how can you be so underhanded!"

"Underhanded? I don't see it." Gu Mengyao laughed. "Xiaoshu, I'm on my way down now. This time, it's your turn to hide. You'd better hide well—otherwise, you'll be the one making the confession."

Dejected, Shen Yushu hung up and waited in the living room for Gu Mengyao to come downstairs. Before long, Gu Mengyao indeed made her way down from upstairs, and seeing that she had really been up there all along, Shen Yushu gritted her teeth in frustration.

"Yaoyao, my turn. Go wait in the bathroom," Shen Yushu said.

"Sure. When you've hidden yourself, just give me a call," Gu Mengyao replied casually. She had already won a round already; even if she lost this one, at worst they'd be tied, so she felt not the slightest tension.

Gu Mengyao went into the bathroom and shut the door, and Shen Yushu went to hide.

Originally, Shen Yushu had meant to hide almost anywhere this time, but after losing the last round, she couldn't risk it. She had no choice but to hide in that ultimate, foolproof spot.

Only after seeing Gu Mengyao close the bathroom door did Shen Yushu tiptoe out of the villa's main entrance and into the courtyard. In the back garden sat a small storage shed, enclosed by a metal fence, which was normally kept locked.

Since Gu Mengyao lived alone and had hardly any odds and ends, the shed had gone unused ever since the villa was bought. Long ago, though, when Shen Yushu and Gu Mengyao had once played badminton in the yard, the shuttlecock had fallen inside the fence—and Shen Yushu had squeezed through a gap in the fence to retrieve it.

It was a heaven-sent hiding place! Shen Yushu was certain that once she was inside, Gu Mengyao would never think of it, because the gate in the fence had a lock on it. Gu Mengyao probably didn't even remember where the key was. How would she ever come looking for someone here?

Shen Yushu giggled, then dashed to the fence, swung one leg over, and slipped her body through the narrow opening between the iron rails...
