Chapter 215 — A Chance Encounter at the Hospital

The Blossom Guardian

He wanted Wei Zhao dead, and felt not the slightest guilt about it. Not only that — he wanted Wei Zhao to die in an even crueler way.

This was the difference between a child raised in such a ruthless family and one from an ordinary household.

What could make Wei Zhao suffer even more? Physical torment no longer held any interest for Zhong Yongliang — beating Wei Zhao up had lost its appeal.

The torture of the mind was far more agonizing than any physical pain. Zhong Yongliang, who had built up his nerve through countless horror movies, understood this well. So if he wanted to torment Wei Zhao, he had to strike at his heart and spirit.

Hmm... Right. Zhong Yongliang suddenly remembered that Zou Ruoming had come to him before to discuss Tang Yun. If Tang Yun were ruined by Zou Ruoming, and Wei Zhao were made to watch before he died... heh heh, wouldn't he die with his eyes wide open?

At the thought, Zhong Yongliang couldn't help cackling out loud. What a genius he was — even such a vicious scheme could be conceived by him! Just imagine: Wei Zhao watches his beloved woman being ruined by Zou Ruoming, yet can do nothing about it, then gets beaten to death by Brother Black Panther, dying in agony... What a satisfying scene that would be, wouldn't it? He would probably become a vengeful spirit, resentment surging skyward, just like a wraith from a horror film...

Zhong Yongliang decided that Monday morning when school started, he would go find Zou Ruoming and discuss the matter. Of course, he couldn't reveal the part about killing Wei Zhao — he would only say he could help Zou Ruoming accomplish it.

......

Early Sunday morning, Wei Zhao was woken from his sleep by a phone call from Kang**.

"Boss, I want to go to the hospital to see Xiaofen. Are you coming?" Kang** hadn't slept well all night — once again, he had suffered from insomnia.

The last time he'd lost sleep, it was because he was going to the school beauty Tang Yun's house for barbecue — a feat worthy of bragging. But now Kang** had completely forgotten about that bragging right. All his thoughts were on Xiaofen.

Last night, for the first time in his life, Kang** had lost sleep over a girl — partly from sympathy for Xiaofen, partly from hatred for his cousin Kang Zhaoming.

A perfectly fine girl had been reduced to this state because of him, yet he didn't care at all and had never even shown his face again! Xiaofen's family was already poor enough; her illness only made things worse.

This made Kang** furious. Several times he wanted to call his second cousin and demand an explanation, but he held himself back. After all, he had only heard Tang Yun's side of the story. Though he leaned toward believing her, he couldn't know the actual situation until he asked Xiaofen herself.

Besides, when two people in a relationship broke up because one of them changed their heart, it was hard to say who was right and who was wrong. But if Kang Zhaoming really was that heartless, then he was simply not human.

"Do you want me to drive you there, or do you want me to go with you?" Wei Zhao climbed out of bed, phone in hand.

"Both..." Kang** chuckled twice. "Boss, for one thing, I was hoping to bum a ride off you; for another, if you don't come with me, it'd be a bit awkward for me to go alone. Given your relationship with Tang Yun, it's only natural for you to visit her friend."

"What relationship do I have with Tang Yun?" Wei Zhao said with a wry smile. "There's nothing between us right now!"

"Whether there is or isn't, you're definitely closer to her than I am to Xiaofen. If you don't go, I won't feel right going either!" Kang** said. "Boss, just take care of your little brother's love life, will you? Since I've made up my mind, I'm going to charge forward and never back down."

"Alright. Wait for me at the same place as yesterday. I'll get ready and head over in about an hour," Wei Zhao said.

Wei Zhao naturally supported his only brother at school. Kang** was a good guy and very loyal. On harmless matters like this, if Wei Zhao could help, he would.

Wei Zhao put down the phone and got dressed. He glanced at the time — just past seven. That Kang**, he really was an early bird. Ever since Wei Zhao had been able to communicate with Old Jiao in his dreams, he had taken endless delight in it. The old man knew so much, about everything under the sun, as if there was nothing he couldn't do.

He went to the kitchen first. Using the leftover hairtail from yesterday, Wei Zhao cut up a few potatoes and put them all into the electric pressure cooker. The advantage of stewing potatoes in an electric pressure cooker was that it was quick and the potatoes came out soft.

Gu Mengyao's kitchen had every kind of cooking utensil imaginable — a complete set — but many of them had never been used. Though the pots had been taken out of their boxes and placed in the cupboard, the instruction manuals were still inside them.

The electric pressure cooker had an automatic timer, so Wei Zhao didn't need to set anything manually. He left a note on the dining table for Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu, telling them to help themselves after getting up, saying he had some errands to run. Then he left the villa.

The matter of Shen Yushu's smashed-up car had been dropped. Wei Zhao couldn't be bothered to call Uncle Qing to come fix it. It could wait for now — it didn't affect the car's usability anyway.

At Ningshi Road station, Kang** was already waiting. Wei Zhao picked him up, and they headed to the city's First People's Hospital.

In the emergency room ward, however, they didn't see Xiaofen's family. The bed Xiaofen had occupied was now taken by an old woman. Only after Kang** asked around did they learn that Xiaofen had already been moved to an inpatient ward.

Just as they were leaving the ward, they saw Nurse Guan Xin — the one who had dressed his wound before — walking in with medicine in her hand. Spotting Wei Zhao, she gave a slight start of surprise.

"Wei Zhao? What are you doing here?" Guan Xin's voice held a note of surprise and delight.

These past days, Guan Xin had been worried about Wei Zhao's injury. Ever since his last dressing change, when he had never come back, she had feared that something had gone wrong with his wound... In truth, Guan Xin also hoped to see more of Wei Zhao. Toward her savior, she harbored an indescribable fondness.

It couldn't be called love — Guan Xin wasn't that infatuated. It was more that he left a very good impression on her; when she didn't see him, she would think of him... She had thought she would never see Wei Zhao again, yet unexpectedly they met by chance in the hospital.

This surprised and delighted her at the same time.

"Guan Xin? Haha, a friend of mine is hospitalized, so I came to visit." Wei Zhao hadn't expected to run into Guan Xin here either.

"Oh..." Guan Xin nodded. "The wound on your leg..."

"It healed long ago," Wei Zhao said with a smile. "Thank you."

Guan Xin wanted to say more, but just then a doctor in the ward called her over to change a patient's dressing. She could only rush an apology to Wei Zhao and leave with some reluctance.

She had wanted to ask for Wei Zhao's mobile number, but she couldn't bring herself to say it. After all, she was a girl — it was embarrassing to ask a man for his number...

Inwardly she felt a twinge of annoyance: couldn't you just take the initiative and ask for my number?
