Chapter 217 — A Storm in the Ward
"So do you think he has a chance?" Wei Zhao asked.
"How would I know?" Tang Yun gave a low snort. "Everyone around you learns from you — instead of studying properly, they go chasing after girls."
"Heh, we're talking about him now, not me." Wei Zhao said, "But I'd say Kang is eighty percent smitten."
Tang Yun gazed thoughtfully at Kang's receding figure. If Kang truly had feelings for her, then she herself would not mind playing matchmaker for the two of them — after all, if Xiaofen could accept Kang, then she too could step out of the shadows. "Are you sure it isn't just a passing fancy, that he wants to be with Xiaofen for a lifetime? Not like you, just playing around?"
"Why do you always drag me into it? I've never once told you I just wanted to play around with you!" Wei Zhao smiled bitterly. "I'm not certain whether Kang's feelings are fleeting either, but I don't think they are."
Tang Yun shot Wei Zhao a glare. "A girl's reputation matters greatly. She should be constant to the end. Xiaofen has been wounded once — she can't afford to be wounded a second time."
Wei Zhao had not expected that, at her core, Tang Yun was the kind of girl who, once she set her heart on someone, would never let go. Most people, when they found themselves a girlfriend too beautiful, would worry that one day she might run off — but with Tang Yun, that worry simply did not exist.
As the two of them were talking, an argument broke out up ahead where Kang was.
Kang was somewhat agitatedly arguing something with a middle-aged man, while Song Huiping stood to one side, her face full of worry, trying to smooth things over.
"We're not refusing to pay — why won't you arrange a better ward for us?" Kang was truly angry now. He had eagerly dragged Song Huiping along to find the head of the inpatient department to switch to a better private room, only to be shot down with a single word: "None."
But that alone would have been tolerable. Just as he was stepping out of the director's office, a doctor in a white coat led a patient's family member into the office, smiling as he told the director that this was his brother and asking him to look after things and arrange a premium ward. The director, without a moment's thought, arranged a better ward for him on the spot.
Now Kang was truly furious! You said there were none? Then how was it that when we came, there were none, but when a hospital staff member brought a friend, suddenly there was one?
"There's only one premium ward left, and it's been reserved for one of our own," the head of the inpatient department explained flatly, seemingly unwilling to waste more words on Kang.
"Is there no first-come, first-served here? We're not refusing to pay either — why won't you give it to us? Insiders get priority?" Kang grew even more indignant.
"If you haven't got the connections, then stop your yapping here. My husband's classmate is the chief physician here. You've got no connections, and you still want a ward? Give it up!" A heavily made-up woman beside the doctor's brother looked at Kang with disdain. "Look at that stupid face of yours — just stop embarrassing yourself!"
"You—" Kang flared up. "Who are you calling stupid?"
"So what if I'm calling you stupid? One look and anyone can tell you're the kind of bumpkin with a bit of money. Look at your mother's getup — she looks like a village girl who's come to town!" Seeing Kang yell at his woman, the man immediately grew irritated. He glared at Kang and Song Huiping — whom he had taken for Kang's mother. "Bah!"
The man spat contemptuously, and as ill luck would have it, the glob landed right on Kang's shoe. The man clearly hadn't expected his spit to land so accurately either, and he paused slightly, taken aback.
"You—wipe that off for me, right now!" Kang had been running with Wei Zhao these past few days, and a man's hot-blooded spirit had filled him too.
"Come on, kid, don't make a scene." The man casually pulled a hundred-yuan note from his bag and stuffed it into Kang's hand. "Go find yourself a place to get your shoes cleaned. I'm telling you, these days it's not money that gets things done — it's connections. Learn a thing or two!"
With that, the man, also afraid that Kang might keep picking a fight, pulled the woman away quickly, then followed his doctor brother to hurriedly process the admission paperwork.
The man's name was Zhao Guangdong, and he had come today to find a ward for his boss. Truth be told, his boss had no serious ailment — just slightly high blood pressure these past few days, coming to the hospital for a drip. He didn't really need a ward at all. But to show off his connections, Zhao Guangdong had specifically sought out his brother, the chief physician here, to secure a premium ward.
Kang watched Zhao Guangdong's departing figure, then furiously hurled the hundred-yuan note in his hand to the ground. His fists clenched tight, his eyes bloodshot, he was so enraged he was gasping for breath in great heaves.
"Heh." Wei Zhao walked over, picked the hundred yuan up from the ground, and stuffed it back into Kang's hand. "You should still take the money. Don't let your pride get in the way of money."
"Boss, I want to hit him!" Kang knew Wei Zhao meant well. Right now, with Xiaofen hospitalized, every bit of extra money was welcome. It was just that earlier he couldn't bring himself to swallow his pride — but now that Wei Zhao had handed the money to him, Kang took it along with the gesture.
"Kang, let's forget the ward. Whatever you do, don't get into a fight with anyone — that room is perfectly fine too!" Song Huiping, afraid Kang might cause trouble, hurried to dissuade him.
Tang Yun glanced at Wei Zhao, signaling him to talk Kang down. She understood how Kang felt. She had seen the scene just now with her own eyes, and she knew well the coldness of human hearts and the harshness of the world. Hadn't she herself gone to the factory to demand her father's medical fees, only to face one obstacle after another, and in the end be driven out?
People with connections only had to say a word, and the medical fees were paid out — and their injuries weren't even serious, nothing compared to her father's.
"Sometimes, hitting someone isn't the only way to solve things." Wei Zhao patted Kang on the shoulder. "Different people require different methods. You wait for me. However they moved in, I'll make them move right back out."
With that, Wei Zhao headed toward the office of the head of the inpatient department. The director, having taken advantage of Kang and Zhao Guangdong's argument to slip back earlier, saw Wei Zhao walk in and was about to ask what he wanted — but then he caught sight of Kang and the others following behind him, and his face immediately darkened. "Didn't I already tell you? There are no wards left. Why are you still here?"
"Are you certain that there was only one vacant premium ward, and you gave it to those people just now?" Wei Zhao ignored his words and asked directly.
"Yes. You may leave now." The director waved his hand impatiently.
"Then have them vacate it." Wei Zhao said flatly.
"Ha..." Hearing Wei Zhao's words, the director was so amused he nearly laughed in anger. Who do you think you are? You say vacate it and they vacate it? Are you the hospital director? "I have things to do. If you're here to cause trouble, then I'll call security!"
"You're certain you won't have them vacate it?" Wei Zhao said, taking out his phone. "Then I'll have no choice but to find someone to make them vacate it..."
