Chapter 265 — A Change of Impression
"Even so, I still have to thank you. I, An Jianwen, am not a man who likes to owe others favors. This debt today, I will repay!" As for Wei Zhao's words, An Jianwen paid them no mind.
The two had been at each other's throats before, and the fact that Wei Zhao could step in to save him now was entirely out of consideration for Gu Mengyao. An Jianwen understood this perfectly well.
He cast Gu Mengyao a grateful look. "Yaoyao, your Brother Jianwen didn't treat you well for nothing back then!"
As for Shen Yushu, An Jianwen had nothing left to say. That girl was just like that — whoever rubbed her the wrong way, she would torment to death. An Jianwen had no idea how he had provoked this little hellion; she had always been less than fond of him.
"It's nothing. As long as you're all right." Seeing that An Jianwen's life was no longer in danger, Gu Mengyao breathed a sigh of relief. "But you should still do as Wei Zhao said and get your stomach pumped, just to be safe."
Without realizing it, Gu Mengyao had come to regard Wei Zhao as her personal encyclopedia. At some point, his words had begun to influence her deeply.
"Of course..." An Jianwen smiled. He said the words aloud, but inside, his heart ached. There had been a time when Gu Mengyao had listened to him just like this, treating her big brother's every word as gospel truth, flying into a rage at anyone who dared argue with him. But the years had passed, and another man had appeared in her life...
An Jianwen refused to accept it. He had thought that upon returning from his studies abroad, he could formally propose courting Gu Mengyao. She was only just about to enter university then, and given the Gu family's upbringing, they would never allow her to date so early. So An Jianwen had returned to Songshan City full of confidence — he had not even bothered to inquire about Gu Mengyao's situation in advance, nor had he rushed to pay a visit. Instead, he had first sought out Su Taizao, once a fellow member of the Four Young Masters of Songshan, to catch up.
He had never expected that in a restaurant at an amusement park, he would happen upon Gu Mengyao — only to find she was already taken... and her man looked utterly ordinary. Just as An Jianwen began to wonder whether there was something wrong with Gu Mengyao's judgment, whether she had deliberately rebelled by choosing some poor nobody, the skill Wei Zhao displayed completely overturned his opinion.
To determine the cause of his illness from a single glance at the soup he had drunk, to make him vomit up everything he had eaten with a few presses and kneads on his back — was that something an ordinary person could do?
Especially after overhearing the exchange between Gu Mengyao and him, An Jianwen became all the more certain that he had misjudged the man. Wei Zhao was not as simple as he appeared on the surface.
"Wei Zhao, can you save Brother Jianwen?" "Oh, I can. But I don't want to."
Those few simple sentences made it clear that Wei Zhao's abilities might extend far beyond this — perhaps much further. Because saving a life seemed to be no more than a casual effort for him.
This forced An Jianwen to reassess the level of his opponent. For the first time, this rival made him feel something he had to take seriously. Before, there had only been mockery, contempt, and confidence.
The sound of an ambulance siren rose. Even at an amusement park, an ambulance had free passage — it was just that the distance from the hospital to the suburban amusement park was not short. By the time the ambulance arrived, Wei Zhao had already brought An Jianwen back from the brink.
Several paramedics strode in quickly. "Where's the patient?"
"Over here!" Su Taizao hurriedly waved them over. "Food allergy. He's already vomited it up. He needs a stomach pump!"
"All right. Are you a family member of the patient?" The paramedics moved to lift An Jianwen onto a stretcher, but An Jianwen waved his hand, indicating he could walk on his own.
In front of Gu Mengyao and his rival, no matter how much pain he was in, he refused to lose face.
"I'm his friend." Su Taizao told the paramedics. "No need for the stretcher. I'll support him."
With Su Taizao's help, An Jianwen made his way out of the restaurant. The restaurant owner had the waitstaff quickly clean up the pile of filth An Jianwen had vomited.
Even so, many of the diners in the restaurant chose to leave. After all, the scene just now had been rather disgusting.
Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu had lost their appetites too. Just as they were about to call Wei Zhao to leave, they looked up and found him sitting at the table, eating with gusto. Gu Mengyao was momentarily speechless. Hadn't that scene just now disgusted him?
In truth, to Wei Zhao, this was nothing disgusting at all. He had seen far worse. When it was time to eat, you ate.
The restaurant owner, however, felt a bit embarrassed. He refunded all the money Wei Zhao had paid for his meal. Wei Zhao had solved a big problem for him, and besides, Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu could no longer eat. The owner felt somewhat apologetic.
Seeing Wei Zhao eating so heartily, Gu Mengyao, to her own surprise, did not scold him. Instead, she sat quietly to one side, waiting for him to finish. This man — the more she looked at him, the less she could figure him out. He seemed to know nothing, yet seemed to know everything.
He seemed like a scoundrel and a lecher, yet also like a man of strong principles.
Gu Mengyao was not actually foolish — otherwise she could never have maintained a top-ten ranking in her year at the First High School, where talent was abundant. When her daddy had first assigned Wei Zhao to her side, Gu Mengyao had resisted, been furious, even been baffled as to why her daddy would find a migrant laborer for the job.
But after this period of contact, Gu Mengyao had come to understand that Wei Zhao truly was a capable man. Though she was unwilling to admit it, she had little by little accepted this fact.
"You two aren't eating? If you're not, I'll finish them both?" Wei Zhao asked, looking at the other two fast-food meals on the table.
"You eat them all." Gu Mengyao nodded.
Wei Zhao demolished the other two meals like a whirlwind sweeping away clouds.
"Wow, Arrow-Brand Bro, you're amazing!" Shen Yushu stared in astonishment at the three completely empty fast-food boxes.
"Let's go bungee jumping after you're done." Gu Mengyao was clearly not letting what had happened affect her mood — it had only affected her appetite. An Jianwen had felt utterly unfamiliar to her this time, especially after he had shown hostility toward Wei Zhao. For no reason at all, a faint disgust had risen in Gu Mengyao's heart. The image of the boy-next-door brother had come crashing down.
"Heh... all right." Wei Zhao walked toward the restaurant entrance with Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu. But just before reaching the door, he cast a meaningful glance at a young man whose face was swollen like a steamed bun, gave a faint smile, and turned to leave.
"Brother Cosmos, they're going bungee jumping!" Little Ma said, his cheeks swollen from being pinched by Shen Yushu, his speech a little clumsy...
