Chapter 350 — The Ward and the Surgery Problem

The Blossom Guardian

Quite a few girls told their boyfriends that if only they would declare themselves in front of Wang Zhifeng the way Wei Zhao had, they would do anything he asked...

Every male classmate with a mind to mischief wished he could turn into Wei Zhao on the spot, yet at the thought of what such a confession would bring down upon him, not one dared actually do it.

Wei Zhao could say such a thing and walk away unscathed; but if they said it themselves, a demerit — or expulsion — would not be far behind.

Before, Tang Yun had found it mortifying, but after days of hearing the whispers the students traded behind closed doors, she had come to feel rather happy instead. At least many people envied her.

Even Zou Ruoming, who used to leer and make crude remarks the moment he laid eyes on her, now gave her a wide berth. All of it was Wei Zhao's doing.

Of course, if Zou Ruoming counted for little, what everyone envied most was that even Wang Zhifeng would nod at Tang Yun with a smile whenever he saw her. Tang Yun found it hard to imagine that this was the same dean of academic affairs who had cursed her up one side and down the other after she had drenched him with water.

In truth, Wang Zhifeng had grievances he could not voice. Tang Yun was Wei Zhao's girlfriend, and who knew how far the two of them had gone — whether they had already booked a room? If they had, and Wei Zhao happened to recall the scene he had witnessed that morning and let a word slip to Tang Yun, then his own secret would be known to her as well.

So Wang Zhifeng did not dare offend Tang Yun; still less did he want her to hold a grudge against him over that incident. That was why he was so kind and amiable to her.

The phone in Tang Yun's pocket began to buzz. She was slightly startled. Only Wei Zhao, Kang Xiaobo, Liu Xinwen, Xiaofen, and her parents knew her number. She was with Wei Zhao right now — who could be calling?

"Wait a moment, I need to take this call..." Tang Yun drew her hand out of Wei Zhao's big palm and fished the phone from her pocket. The screen showed Mom's number.

Mom knew she was at school — why would she call at this hour? Tang Yun found it strange, but she answered anyway: "Hello... Mom?"

"Yun'er, are you at school?" Mother Tang's voice carried a note of urgency.

"Yes, I'm at school. I was just about to go to the cafeteria for dinner. Is something wrong?" Something in her mother's tone made Tang Yun uneasy.

"Are you with Wei Zhao?" Mother Tang asked instead.

"..." Tang Yun was all the more bewildered. Her mother had called just to ask this? To ask whether she was with Wei Zhao? She found it faintly absurd, but still answered, a little sheepishly: "Mm... I am."

"Then that's good..." Mother Tang let out a breath of relief. "Here's the thing. Go and talk to Wei Zhao — doesn't he know people at the hospital? Ask him to find someone for us..."

"Ah..." At her mother's request, Tang Yun's heart sank a little with displeasure. They have already lent us the money — just go to the hospital and have the surgery. Why go looking for favors? Haven't we caused enough trouble already?

"Yun'er, you don't understand — hospital beds are terribly scarce right now. Without a connection, you end up in the corridor. You wouldn't want your father sleeping in the corridor at night, would you?" Mother Tang had heard how Wei Zhao had gotten a bed for Xiaofen. "And for your father's surgery, I want the head of orthopedics to perform it, but his schedule is full — he only does two surgeries a week, and he's booked solid into the second half of the year. See if you can get Wei Zhao to say a word and squeeze your father in ahead of the queue."

"..." Tang Yun sighed inwardly. She truly did not want to trouble Wei Zhao again, but her mother was speaking the plain truth, and having a skilled doctor operate on her father would set her heart at ease.

Wei Zhao stood very close to Tang Yun. While she was on the phone, he breathed in the fragrance at her fair neck, making her rather uncomfortable. She was about to push him away and tell him to stop making mischief, but what her mother was saying scattered her attention, and she forgot to scold him.

Wei Zhao, however, had heard Mother Tang's every word. Before Tang Yun could speak, he reached for her phone. "Let me talk to your aunt..."

Tang Yun knew he had heard. That he would take the phone meant he was willing to help. She could not help giving him a grateful look.

"Auntie, this is Wei Zhao. I heard everything you said — I'm right here beside Tang Yun." Wei Zhao said with a smile. "It's a small matter. No problem at all."

Tang Yun blushed. She had been talking with her mother, and Wei Zhao had heard every word — which meant just how close had the two of them been standing? Mom wouldn't read too much into it, would she...

As it happened, Mother Tang did read too much into it — she assumed her daughter and Wei Zhao were locked in each other's arms. Yet she had no mind to scold her daughter; if anything, she was all the more delighted. Mother Tang's satisfaction with Wei Zhao had reached its peak. Hearing him agree, she brightened at once: "That's wonderful! Xiao Lin, then I'll be waiting for your good news!"

"Mm, I'll make the call right now. Tell me the chief physician's name." Wei Zhao said with a smile. The bed was no trouble at all — Xiaofen was being discharged today, so the room could go straight to Tang Jucheng.

"The chief physician is named Xu Tiande." Mother Tang said. "If it truly can't be managed, a deputy chief physician would do as well..."

"Mm, I'll try." Wei Zhao hung up and dialed Guan Xuemin's number without further ado. He wasted no courtesy and came straight to the point. Guan Xuemin wrote down the name Xu Tiande and agreed without hesitation.

"All right, it's settled." Wei Zhao told Tang Yun. "You can call your mother and tell her."

"Mm, thank you." Tang Yun did not know what else to say. Apart from thank you, what was there to say?

"Don't thank me anymore — it makes us sound like strangers. How about Sunday? I'll take you to meet Grandpa Guan... Guan Xin's grandfather, that is." Wei Zhao said.

"Ah... Guan Xin's grandfather?" Tang Yun did not know why, but a small sense of loss suddenly rose in her heart. Thinking of the bond between Guan Xin and Wei Zhao, she felt a faint pang of jealousy... Was this what jealousy felt like?

Tang Yun shook her head. She had never imagined that one day she too would know the taste of jealousy.

Before Tang Yun could call her mother, the phone rang again. She answered, and heard her mother's voice, excited and thrilled: "Yun'er, it's settled! You'll never guess — Director Qin arranged it personally. Director Xu's side said they'll add an extra surgery next Monday!"

"Really... that's wonderful..." Tang Yun glanced at Wei Zhao, and the sense of loss in her heart deepened. Perhaps Guan Xin was the one truly suited to him? Guan Xin came from a fine family, and her grandfather was a leading authority in medicine... And yet, for her own family's affairs, she had to go begging to Guan Xin's grandfather...
