Chapter 387 — Then Why Did You Look?
But General Valiant seemed quite clever, and professionally trained besides; at a single gesture from Wei Zhao, it came trotting over, tail wagging with delight.
Though General Valiant was afraid of Wei Zhao, it dared not show it, and could only put on a look of great joy and cheer. It felt that Wei Zhao might butcher it for meat at any moment!
Wei Zhao led General Valiant into the courtyard. Without a word, he laid the treasure map Shen Yushu had drawn in front of the dog, pointed at it, and let a cold smile flicker across his lips.
General Valiant felt a chill rise from the bottom of its heart; every hair on its body stood on end, and that earlier feeling of being butchered for meat grew stronger still!
Yet General Valiant did not dare flee. It was certain that the instant it ran, Wei Zhao would catch it with absolute certainty, and its end would be all the more gruesome.
So, trembling with fear, General Valiant looked at the treasure map in Wei Zhao's hand. One glance, and it found something vaguely familiar; it also roughly understood what Wei Zhao meant.
He had to admit the dog's intelligence was rather high. Seeing that General Valiant understood him, Wei Zhao said nothing more and sat there toying with his Luoyang shovel.
General Valiant broke out in an even greater sweat, terrified that one wrong look from Wei Zhao would bring the shovel down and take off its head. It scrambled up at once and began searching the courtyard to confirm, though of course it dared not walk too fast, lest Wei Zhao misunderstand — what if he thought it was running away?
General Valiant's behavior astonished Wei Zhao as well. This dog was no simple creature — it really understood what he meant? It even understood his threat? Could it be a transmigrator?
Soon, however, General Valiant stopped at a certain spot, scraped at the earth with its paws, and gave a bark at Wei Zhao.
Wei Zhao nodded. He had only meant to give it a try, never expecting General Valiant to be so obliging — to find it so quickly?
Wei Zhao began digging with the Luoyang shovel in his hand. Before long there came a crisp clink. Wei Zhao was somewhat startled — he had not expected to find it so easily.
Nodding in satisfaction at General Valiant, signaling that it could go back, Wei Zhao dug out the chest. Its surface was covered in rust; though one could tell it had once been a fine iron chest, the years had corroded it beyond recognition. There was even a small lock on it, but that too had rusted through and snapped, so it was purely decorative.
When had this been buried? Surely Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu had not buried it themselves? Thinking of that treasure map, it did seem possible.
Wei Zhao opened the chest, somewhat speechless. Had the lock still been intact, he would naturally not have broken it; but now that the little lock had snapped, he simply opened the chest as a matter of course.
Inside the chest was an oil-paper package. Though the chest's exterior was rusted all over, and even the little lock on top had corroded and broken, the interior was well made — waterproof lining, rubber padding, everything one could want. After all these years it was merely a little damp, and the oil paper showed not the slightest sign of ***.
This chest must have cost a pretty penny, though to two young ladies of means it was nothing worth mentioning.
Wei Zhao took out the oil-paper package and unwrapped it casually, only to find layer upon layer of tight wrapping inside — not just oil paper, but plastic sheeting as well.
Peeling away the outer wrappings, he found two small pouches inside. Wei Zhao was rather surprised — this was the so-called treasure?
Just as Wei Zhao was about to open one of the little sachets, a shriek suddenly came from behind him, startling him so badly he nearly flung the sachet from his hand!
He had barely turned his head when he saw Gu Mengyao running toward him wrapped in a bath towel, its hem fluttering in the wind, a pair of long legs, smooth as jade, appearing and vanishing by turns. Though he could not see very clearly, Wei Zhao could not help swallowing.
Gu Mengyao's figure was tall and well proportioned. Though not as voluptuous as Shen Yushu, she was still one in a hundred. Wei Zhao would not go out of his way to peep at the young lady, but when it was delivered right to his eyes, there was no harm in looking.
Gu Mengyao suddenly realized where Wei Zhao's gaze was directed. Her face flushed at once, and she snatched the sachet from his hand, spitting furiously: "Shameless!"
Then she turned and hurried back into the villa — though this time she dared not run; fast as her steps were, she moved in small, careful strides.
Wei Zhao smiled bitterly. That was that — he had left a bad impression on the young lady. But by heaven and earth, she was the one who had run so fast and flashed herself at him; he had not gone looking on purpose.
He returned to the living room dejected, only to find that Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu had already gone upstairs. Wei Zhao was speechless. He had meant well and done ill? He dug up their treasure for them, and they called him shameless... Ah, even peeping was no easy job!
After a while, Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu came back downstairs, now changed into proper, modest pajamas, so that Wei Zhao could see no spring scenery at all.
Yet Wei Zhao felt somewhat wronged. Sometimes Gu Mengyao even wore shorts — did that not reveal more? Just now he had merely found that hazy, indistinct quality a little thrilling; in truth he had seen nothing at all!
Seeing that Gu Mengyao wore the look of one about to deliver a lecture, Wei Zhao quickly sat up straight, feigned an air of complete innocence, and prepared to watch television.
"Ahem, ahem!" Seeing that this creature showed not the slightest remorse for his misdeeds, Gu Mengyao grew even more annoyed. She cleared her throat twice and glared at Wei Zhao.
"Ah, it's the young lady. Is something the matter?" Only then did Wei Zhao pretend to have just noticed her coming downstairs. He raised his head and looked at her warily.
What could he do? He had only himself to blame for having quick eyes and stealing a look at her.
"Brother Arrow, Sister Yaoyao is going to denounce you — you'd better watch out!" Shen Yushu winked at Wei Zhao.
Yet the solemn atmosphere Shen Yushu had stirred up vanished without a trace. Gu Mengyao was about to explode with rage. Shen Yushu was here purely to make trouble; the girl was probably sweet on Wei Zhao and was covering for him! But this creature Wei Zhao was truly shameless, and if he was not warned, it simply would not do.
So Gu Mengyao pretended not to have heard Shen Yushu, and glared sternly at Wei Zhao: "Wei Zhao, do you know how a follower ought to behave?"
"Uh... I know. Don't look at what you shouldn't look at..." Wei Zhao nodded.
"Then why did you look?" Gu Mengyao snorted, thinking: you knew, and you still looked? You did it on purpose, didn't you?
