Chapter 406 — You're the One Who's Sick!

The Blossom Guardian

"Oh." Still, Wei Zhao did not believe for a moment that Feng Xiaoxiao could be so kind as to remind him to drink water in this heat; and besides, if he was the one who was hot, could he not drink water himself? Did he need her to remind him? As it happened, hearing her say so did leave Wei Zhao feeling genuinely thirsty. He reached idly into his desk and came up with an empty bottle — the mineral water he had bought yesterday was already finished.

"Here!" Feng Xiaoxiao hurriedly held her own drink out to Wei Zhao, watching with wide, expectant eyes for him to take it.

"Hm?" Wei Zhao grew all the more certain that something was wrong with this Feng Xiaoxiao — unprovoked courtesy is either villainy or larceny.

"Ahem." Feng Xiaoxiao too realized that she had been a shade too eager; it was only natural that Wei Zhao should suspect something, so she could only explain: "We are deskmates, after all. The teacher says deskmates ought to help each other out."

Wei Zhao would have been a fool to buy such rot; but he was thirsty, all right. He took the drink from Feng Xiaoxiao's hand, and had just reached to open it when he noticed the cap was already unscrewed. Wei Zhao frowned on the spot.

This Feng Xiaoxiao hadn't tampered with the drink, had she? Surely she wouldn't stoop to something so lowbrow?

Seeing Wei Zhao hesitate, Feng Xiaoxiao flushed slightly: "I took a sip from it this morning..."

Wei Zhao was speechless. No wonder the mouth of the bottle had been twisted open. Still, it would not be so easy to do him in: ever since he had begun cultivating the Xuanyuan Dragon-Taming Art, his sense of smell and taste — already sharp, thanks to his mastery of pharmacology — had grown keener still, and he could taste out any poison commonly slipped into water or food.

"You're not sick, are you? Hepatitis B, AIDS, that sort of thing?" Wei Zhao asked, taking the drink from Feng Xiaoxiao's hand.

Feng Xiaoxiao was so angry she very nearly detonated on the spot. She — hepatitis B and AIDS? What a joke! She was a pretty girl, after all; if she handed her half-sipped water to someone else, they would probably fight over it. And here was Wei Zhao, picky and choosy, coming out with these outlandish questions?

Of course, that was on the assumption that the other person did not know Feng Xiaoxiao's temper. Had they known it, they would not have dared drink her water even if you beat them to death — wasn't that just asking for it?

"You're the one who's sick!" Feng Xiaoxiao exploded. "Illiterate! Haven't you read the science reports? Even with hepatitis B or AIDS, it can't be transmitted this way!"

"Heh..." Wei Zhao smiled thinly; he had not expected this little girl to know quite so much. He twisted the cap off the bottle, first testing the contents covertly with his tongue; only when he found nothing amiss did he swallow, drank down half, and shoved the rest straight into his desk: "I've drunk from it — you don't want it anymore, right? The rest is all mine."

Feng Xiaoxiao had never meant to drink what Wei Zhao had touched — a drink some other boy had put his mouth to; how could she possibly go on with it? Yet Wei Zhao's words left her indignant. He had plainly drunk her beverage, and still he had the gall to claim the remainder as his own, brazenly and as if it were only natural — the sheer shamelessness of it!

"No way — I'm still thirsty!" Feng Xiaoxiao refused to give him what he wanted. She snatched the bottle out of his desk, twisted off the cap, and glugged the remaining half down her throat; then she glared at Wei Zhao, panting: "I nearly choked to death!"

Wei Zhao did not know what to do with this somewhat rebellious lass, but he could not be bothered to quarrel with her: if she wanted to drink, let her — so long as she did not end up crying and throwing up afterward the way the Eldest Young Miss had. While Feng Xiaoxiao was drinking she thought nothing of it; afterward, though, she regretted it a little. How could she have drunk something Wei Zhao had drunk from? Her first kiss... "Hmph, just you wait! When you're bursting for the bathroom, I'll show you!"

Feng Xiaoxiao's temperament differed from the Eldest Young Miss's: though she was annoyed, she would not brood over it — she was merely a little vexed. She tossed the empty bottle carelessly toward the trash can in the corner of the classroom, and with a bang it struck, of all people, Zhong Yongliang square on the forehead...

"Ahhh — !" Zhong Yongliang howled, sprang to his feet with a jerk, and cursed through gritted teeth: "Damn it all — who? Who threw that? You got a death wish? Tired of living?"

After Wei Zhao had forced him to change seats, Zhong Yongliang sat in the corner on the right side of the classroom, with the classroom trash can not far behind him. In the old days there had always been a few lazy classmates who could not be bothered to get up and throw their rubbish away, so they simply hurled it through the air.

But once Zhong Yongliang moved over, nobody dared throw anything — what if it hit the third-ranked of the school's Four Great Young Villains? That was no joke.

"Wei Zhao threw it!" Feng Xiaoxiao's eyes rolled cleverly, and she pointed straight at Wei Zhao.

She had hoped to set Wei Zhao and Zhong Yongliang at each other's throats and stir up a little trouble for Wei Zhao.

Had she owned up to throwing it herself, Zhong Yongliang would probably have simply sat back down and swallowed his grievance.

"Huh?!" Zhong Yongliang froze; the fury on his face solidified in an instant, and he looked suddenly awkward. Go pick a fight with Wei Zhao? He wouldn't dare. A presence as formidable as Brother Black Panther had been beaten half to death by Wei Zhao; his entire hope now lay in Zhang Naipao, and until Zhang Naipao came back he would not — absolutely not — provoke Wei Zhao. So Zhong Yongliang had to put away his angry expression and say, somewhat sheepishly: "Never mind..."

Though this tiger's-head, snake's-tail performance was a bit humiliating, it was still better than a beating. Wei Zhao had already thrashed him several times; long ago Zhong Yongliang had lost all face before his classmates, and one more time would not make it worse.

"It wasn't me who threw it. If it had been, I wouldn't have thrown an empty bottle — your skull would have been split open long ago," Wei Zhao said coolly.

"Huh?" Zhong Yongliang started. For all the arrogance of what Wei Zhao said, Zhong Yongliang did not doubt its truth in the least — Wei Zhao had no need to lie to him. More often than not, Wei Zhao picked fights with him for no reason whatsoever; there had been the time he simply kicked him, chair and all, clean across the room...

So, since Wei Zhao said it was not him, it definitely was not him. And as long as it was not Wei Zhao, what did Zhong Yongliang have to fear? His temper flared up all over again: "Who? Who was it? Step forward this instant — or once I find out, you're dead meat!"

Zhong Yongliang's behavior earned the contempt of everyone in the classroom: the moment he had heard it was Wei Zhao who threw it, he shrank; now that Wei Zhao said it wasn't, he was strutting again!

Still, not one of these classmates dared say a word. After all, though Zhong Yongliang did not dare do anything to Wei Zhao, that did not mean he did not dare do something to everyone else!

"Sister Yaoyao, who threw that bottle just now? Was it you?" Shen Yushu spoke up at that very moment, deliberately loud enough for Zhong Yongliang to hear as well.

"Yikes!" Zhong Yongliang panicked all over again. Could it be that Gu Mengyao had thrown it? Otherwise, why would Shen Yushu ask such a thing? Zhong Yongliang broke into a cold sweat at once. He could not afford to cross Wei Zhao — but he did not dare cross Gu Mengyao either. He was still courting her; how could he leave a bad impression on her?
