Chapter 507 — A Bit of Practice

The Blossom Guardian

Wei Zhao had always been a man who nursed his grudges. If not for the mission he was on, whether Kang Zhaolong could still be standing here talking would be another matter entirely.

Kang Zhaolong's expression shifted, his face turning sour at once, but Wang Xinyan's lovely eyes curved, and she stole a glance at Wei Zhao, a faint smile at the corners of her mouth — whether in admiration or in amusement, it was hard to say.

Wei Zhao had always found the relationship between Wang Xinyan and Kang Zhaolong puzzling. He had assumed the two were close, but now it seemed otherwise: deliberately or not, Wang Xinyan kept mocking Xiao Wangba and Kang Zhaolong, which left Wei Zhao somewhat baffled.

"Ahem!" Wu Chengtian coughed. He had gone to no small trouble to invite Wei Zhao today, intending to use the occasion to expose his relationship with Feng Xiaoxiao to Bie Jingyi, so naturally he would not let Kang Zhaolong ruin it.

Kang Zhaolong drew a deep breath. He knew it would not do to make a scene at Wu Chengtian's dinner, so he could only sit back down in gloom, thoroughly displeased at Wei Zhao's refusal to spare his face.

"Ha, today is meant to be a happy occasion — don't let unpleasantness spoil the mood!" Wu Chengtian smoothed things over. "Brother Wei Zhao, you and Feng Xiaoxiao really are a match made in heaven!"

Before Wei Zhao could speak, Feng Xiaoxiao said happily, "You think so too?"

"Indeed. Xiaoxiao, how long have the two of you been together?" Wu Chengtian asked, betraying nothing in his manner.

"A few days now, I think!" Feng Xiaoxiao said after counting it up.

"I see..." Wu Chengtian said in sudden understanding. Could it be that Wei Zhao had only gotten together with Feng Xiaoxiao after parting ways with Bie Jingyi? If so, that saved him a great deal of trouble. Still, to be on the safe side, he resolved to reveal Wei Zhao and Feng Xiaoxiao's relationship to Sun Jingyan.

Wei Zhao had said little throughout, quietly observing every move Feng Xiaoxiao and Wu Chengtian made. Feng Xiaoxiao's attitude puzzled him. By rights, she was not the sort of person to behave this way, nor to flatter and curry favor with Wu Chengtian. From his past experience, Feng Xiaoxiao was a deeply vindictive person — otherwise she would not have come after him again and again.

And Feng Xiaoxiao had just made an enemy of Wu Chengtian in the auction hall; how could she turn around and act as if nothing had happened? Judging by the way she was ordering, she was probably looking for some way to fleece him.

Wu Chengtian's attitude puzzled Wei Zhao as well. As for his claim that he wanted to apologize, Wei Zhao naturally did not believe it. Unless Wu Chengtian had water on the brain, there was no way he would take the initiative to treat him to a meal and offer an apology.

When something is out of the ordinary, there must be something behind it. Though Wei Zhao had not yet figured out his true intent, since he had come, he might as well sit back and watch how things unfolded.

It had to be said that the service at the top-floor restaurant was quite excellent. Not long after they ordered, the waiters brought the dishes out one after another. Besides the signature dishes Feng Xiaoxiao had ordered, abalone, lobster, and crab were all set on the table.

"Wow, I've never in my life eaten such a lavish feast!" Feng Xiaoxiao exclaimed like a country bumpkin.

"Ha, then eat up!" Wu Chengtian's vanity was enormously satisfied. He thought to himself that Wei Zhao was far beneath him, and he could not imagine what Sun Jingyan saw in the man. Judging by Feng Xiaoxiao's behavior, Wei Zhao had probably never even treated her to a proper meal. Yes, that was it — he simply did not know how to put on a show. He had assumed that since Sun Jingyan was born into a wealthy family, she must lack nothing and have seen everything, but now it seemed that might not be so. As long as he kept putting on a show in front of Bie Jingyi from now on, there was no fear she would not like him!

"Then I won't stand on ceremony!" Feng Xiaoxiao pulled the abalone in front of her, picked up her fork and started eating without a thought for anyone else. After two bites she sighed in admiration, "This abalone is really delicious! It's the first time I've ever eaten abalone this big!"

"That's nothing!" Wu Chengtian waved a hand and said smugly. "This abalone is the sort we eat casually at home. At New Year and other festivals, the abalone we eat is much bigger than this. This is only a single-head abalone; the ones my family eats are half-head abalone!"

"Huh? There's such a thing as half-head abalone? Brother Chengtian, you're amazing — you've eaten everything!" Feng Xiaoxiao said admiringly. "In that case, why don't you give me your portion too? You can eat it anytime, but this is the first time in my whole life!"

"Sure, no problem!" Wu Chengtian's heart gave a lurch, and he silently cursed his own loose tongue. Eat it himself? Like hell. This single-head abalone was already top grade; to get even a small piece of it at New Year was considered good, so how could he eat it every day? But the words were already out — how could he take them back? Gritting his teeth, Wu Chengtian could only give his portion of abalone to Feng Xiaoxiao. In his heart, though, he consoled himself: what a show of class this was. He might as well treat it as practice in putting on airs, so that in the future he could do it smoothly in front of Sun Jingyan!

"Really? That's wonderful. Oh, but these two aren't very much either — I can hardly bear to eat them!" Though Feng Xiaoxiao said this, her fork was not idle, shoveling one delicacy after another into her mouth.

Feng Xiaoxiao had come with the express intention of fleecing Wu Chengtian. Who told him and his grandfather to treat her that way at the auction? If not him, who else was there to fleece? Besides, Feng Xiaoxiao really had never eaten anything so high-class; if she did not eat her fill now, she might never get the chance again before she died. So she paid no attention to appearances at all — first fill her belly and worry about the rest later!

"This junk is nothing to people of our lineage!" Wu Chengtian continued practicing his showing off. He found that his skill at it was improving by the day — he could tell tall tales without even blinking. He was thrilled inside, though his face remained calm. "Wangba, wouldn't you agree?"

"Of course! Seafood like this is common fare in the eyes of people of our lineage. Far too plain. When we want something to eat, we usually have things like crested ibis..." The Xiao family was a whole grade below the Wu family — how could they eat such high-class things regularly? Even when the old master of the Xiao family was alive, he probably had not tasted it more than a few times. But to play along with Wu Chengtian, Xiao Wangba naturally let his mouth run away with him.

"Oh? What's a crested ibis? Is there any here? I want to try it too!" Feng Xiaoxiao asked in surprise.

"That..." Xiao Wangba was struck dumb for a moment. He had only been talking idly. There were hardly any crested ibises left in the whole world; he had never even seen one, let alone eaten one. Now Feng Xiaoxiao wanted to eat one too — where was he supposed to get it? Even if he could get one, wouldn't he be shot for it? It was a protected animal!
