Chapter 597 — The Disheartened Young Miss

The Blossom Guardian

"Oh, oh — then from now on, when there's nothing better to do, we can crawl through fences for fun," Shen Yushu piped up right after.

"..." Wei Zhao very nearly drove the car into the drainage ditch at the roadside.

"From now on, whatever intimate things you do with Tang Yun, you have to report them to me in advance as well!" For reasons Gu Mengyao herself could not have named, that was what she came out with.

"Uh... I don't think that's necessary, is it? I do have a private life..." Wei Zhao said, breaking into a sweat.

"Of course it is necessary!" Gu Mengyao said, adamant. "What if you're *** with Tang Yun, and danger finds me over here — and you can't stop over there? So it absolutely has to be reported beforehand..."

"***?" Wei Zhao smiled wryly. "That has to be reported too?"

"Naturally! For one thing, it is to keep your private life under surveillance. Xiao Shu and I are both pure, innocent girls — if your private life is too debauched, I shall have to consider firing you!" Gu Mengyao said with perfect solemnity.

"All right..." Wei Zhao nodded. The Young Miss was in a towering temper today, and he had no wish to provoke her. Whatever came of it, best to agree first and think later.

"Then, Sister Yaoyao, are we still going home to have a threesome?" Shen Yushu was rather disappointed to see Gu Mengyao beating a retreat.

"Threesome? What threesome?" Gu Mengyao glared at Shen Yushu. "Why are you so set on playing? If you want to play, go play by yourself!"

"I can't play by myself!" Shen Yushu said, looking distressed. "Sister Yaoyao doesn't keep her word."

"That's enough, Xiao Shu, don't talk about that. You're still little — you can't play. When you're grown up, then you can play, all right?" Shen Yushu was giving Gu Mengyao a headache.

"Oh, all right then. When I'm grown up, will you play with me?" Shen Yushu's face finally broke into a smile.

"Fine!" Gu Mengyao answered, exasperated beyond words.

Wei Zhao could only smile wryly. This was one conversation he truly could not put a word into.

"Is Uncle Gu at home?" Wei Zhao changed the subject, because he honestly had no idea how to take part in the previous one.

"Daddy was going to treat you to dinner, and you made him wait more than ten hours!" Gu Mengyao pointed out the car window. "It's almost daylight!"

"Ha, then I really am sorry. I'll explain when we get back," Wei Zhao said with a wry smile.

"Hmph!" Gu Mengyao snorted. "Drive faster. There's a banquet waiting at home."

Wei Zhao said nothing, but he did speed up. Gu Mengyao's Audi S5 was a sports car, quick off the mark to begin with, and now, in the dead of night, with scarcely another car on the road, Wei Zhao pushed it to its limit in a single burst.

"Ah!" Caught off guard, Gu Mengyao gave a start.

Shen Yushu, meanwhile, flung her arms and legs about in delight. "Ooh, this is awesome — a roller coaster..."

"..." Gu Mengyao was speechless. There must be a fear factor missing from the wiring in Shen Yushu's brain — how was it she had no idea what terrifying meant?

In the blink of an eye Wei Zhao pulled the car up at the gate of Gu Mengyao's villa. Hearing the car at the gate, both Gu Pengzhan and Uncle Qing came running out. Earlier, Uncle Qing and Gu Pengzhan had followed along to Fatty Lai's villa, waited a while, telephoned Gu Mengyao to confirm the state of Wei Zhao's injuries, and then gone home to wait.

After all, it was hardly appropriate for Gu Pengzhan to be waiting at Fatty Lai's house as well.

"Wei Zhao, you're all right?" Gu Pengzhan stared in astonishment at Wei Zhao as he stepped down from the driver's seat. Gu Mengyao had said his injuries were grave, that he had been spitting blood — and yet here he was, and setting aside the vivid smear of bloodstains on his shirt, his complexion was ruddy and he looked in no way like a wounded man.

Had it not been for that patch of blood on his clothes, Gu Pengzhan might even have thought Wei Zhao had never been injured at all; only that smear bore witness to what had happened.

"I'm fine now. I'm a doctor myself," Wei Zhao shrugged. "Thank you for your concern, Uncle Gu — sorry to have kept you waiting!"

"Waiting is nothing, so long as you're all right!" Gu Pengzhan said, with feeling. "I was worried sick. Elder Lin sent you to help our Gu family, but if anything had truly happened to you, how would I ever answer to Elder Lin?"

"This time it was I who was rash, and I've put you to trouble, Uncle Gu," Wei Zhao said, embarrassed. Yet for all his saying so, he promised nothing about next time — because if matters were rewound to before he set out to find Zhao Qibing, Wei Zhao would still have done the same.

"It's no matter. The meal is all prepared, only some of it has gone cold. Let the two of us drink a couple of cups together, to settle your nerves, and to thank you for saving Yaoyao and Xiao Shu," Gu Pengzhan said.

The group entered the villa. Wei Zhao showered and changed into casual clothes, and Uncle Qing had already reheated the food. Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu sat in the dining room, and when Gu Pengzhan saw Wei Zhao come out, he drew him over to sit down as well.

Gu Mengyao sat quietly at the table, staring into space, turning over her own strange behavior that day. Was this really her? She had actually gone and vied for Wei Zhao's affections with Tang Yun — and proudly announced to her that she meant to pursue Wei Zhao?

How could that be? Absolutely impossible! She must be dreaming! But Gu Mengyao pinched herself, and found that she was not asleep and dreaming at all, but in the midst of reality.

Thinking back on scene after scene, Gu Mengyao's face heated... She, pursuing Wei Zhao? It ought to be the other way around — Wei Zhao pursuing her! And if he did pursue her, would she agree? Refuse him outright, or give him a chance?

Gu Mengyao felt a faint anticipation, and a little shyness, and more than anything a sense of helplessness. What had happened today had gone beyond the Young Miss's capacity to bear; everything she had done and every word she had spoken had come from the heat of anger, without much use of her brain.

Now, remembering it, Gu Mengyao blushed...

"Yaoyao, Xiao Shu, for this first cup, you two drink to Wei Zhao, to thank him for saving you," Gu Pengzhan said once he had taken his seat.

"Oh, okay!" Shen Yushu raised the drink in front of her.

But Gu Mengyao was still staring into space, and seemed not to have heard Gu Pengzhan's words at all.

"Yaoyao?" Gu Pengzhan frowned. What was the matter with his daughter? She had been a little absent-minded ever since a while ago, and he had no notion what she was thinking about.

"Ah? Daddy, what is it? Is something the matter?" Gu Mengyao came back to herself and looked at Gu Pengzhan, at a loss.

"You and Xiao Shu drink a toast to Wei Zhao, to thank him for saving you!" Gu Pengzhan had no choice but to repeat himself; it was very late now, after all, and Gu Mengyao had gone a whole night without sleep, so a moment of wool-gathering was only natural.

"Oh, all right." Gu Mengyao's face flushed slightly. She picked up her cup, yet somehow no longer dared to look at Wei Zhao, and a small vexation stirred in her heart: would you go this far for me as well? If one set aside the fact that I'm only your employer...
