Chapter 627 — Tipping Off
With those words, he rose to his feet and walked out of the private room.
Wei Zhao's hearing was extraordinary, yet even he could not make out what was being said on An Jianwen's phone, catching only the faint words "police car." As he had already been keeping an eye on An Jianwen, instinct told him there was something wrong with that call.
Once An Jianwen had gone out, Wei Zhao also stood up. "I'm going to the restroom."
Su Taizao had no idea that An Jianwen's call was meant to be kept from others, and simply assumed An Jianwen thought it rude to take a call inside the room and was deliberately keeping up his image as a perfect gentleman before Gu Mengyao, so he paid no attention at all to Wei Zhao going out right after, not even sparing him a glance!
In his eyes, Wei Zhao was nothing but a petty attendant, entirely unpresentable, and his politeness toward him was only so that Wei Zhao would serve as an inside ally to help An Jianwen pursue Gu Mengyao.
Su Taizao had seen it himself when Wei Zhao broke Bing Shao's leg and even tore down Bing Shao's building. He and An Jianwen had been at Bing Shao's completion ceremony that day, and he found it almost inconceivable that Wei Zhao could still be alive.
Having offended Bing Shao, how could he still be leisurely accompanying Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu to dinner? Had Bing Shao really taken no revenge? Strange as it was, when he told An Jianwen about it, An Jianwen had only smiled faintly and offered no further explanation.
What Su Taizao did not know, An Jianwen knew all too well. Li Cihua had let it slip that two Huang-level experts at his side had lost their lives at Wei Zhao's hands. Was that the mark of an ordinary man? If he were only a common attendant, why would An Jianwen ever give him money? To suffer losses at his hands time and again and still call him brother — would that not be sheer brain damage?
With his own attendants not yet in place, An Jianwen would naturally not go out of his way to provoke Wei Zhao for sport, and as for Bing Shao holding back, perhaps he too had his misgivings. After all, Wei Zhao and Li Cihua had already sworn an irreconcilable feud.
Of course, those grudges had nothing whatsoever to do with An Jianwen. All he cared about was the family business and whether he could win Gu Mengyao. Nothing else mattered.
Out of the private room, An Jianwen swayed step by step to the deserted end of the corridor before he went on with his call. Drunk though he was, he remained cautious, for some things could absolutely never be known by others!
He already regretted having cut out one of Zhong Yongliang's kidneys! What he regretted was not offending Bing Shao and Li Cihua over Zhong Yongliang, but that he should never have taken the kidney at all. To have simply crippled him or even stomped his balls would have been far better than taking a kidney!
Was that not asking to expose himself? Fortunately Zhong Fabai had not called the police, and Li Cihua was in a cooperative relationship with him, so the matter had been hushed up for the time being. Otherwise, who knew what might have happened.
"Why do you have to ask me about every little thing? If they're watching closely, then slow down. Can't you talk about it later!" An Jianwen was in a hurry to get back and declare himself to Gu Mengyao, so he spoke to the tattooed man with some impatience.
"Brother Wen, the Fire Wolf Gang is pressing us hard, and their supply is very tight... Why don't we spend some money to buy a few? Those peasants are desperate for cash. If we pay for kidneys, we should be able to collect some." The tattooed man said carefully.
"Buy my ass! Where is the money?" Thinking that this one meal had eaten up hundreds of thousands, An Jianwen's heart bled. How could he bear to spend money buying kidneys now? How many kidneys would he have to cut to make back the cost of today's dinner?
"This..." The tattooed man had not expected An Jianwen's temper to be so fierce, and dared not make another sound.
"Worthless trash. If Gayazi Village is finished, can't you go to another village? I hear Binjia Village to the north is just as poor, and many there are unregistered, without even a household record. Can't you go there?" An Jianwen said irritably.
"Yes, yes! We'll go to Binjia Village next!" The tattooed man hastily agreed.
"Enough. Don't call me unless there's something. I have serious business to attend to!" Cursing under his breath, An Jianwen hung up, put away his phone, and turned to head back to the private room.
With a quick sidestep, Wei Zhao slipped into the restroom nearby, so An Jianwen naturally never saw that Wei Zhao had just been behind him eavesdropping on his call.
If Wei Zhao's guess was right, this An Jianwen was very likely the mastermind behind the kidney-harvesting ring, but whether he harvested kidneys or not had little to do with Wei Zhao. So long as he did not cut into Wei Zhao himself or those around him, Wei Zhao was truly too lazy to bother with him.
But since Qiu Lingshan had come begging to him, and Wei Zhao had promised to help her, he decided to do her this one favor. Seeing that the restroom was empty, Wei Zhao dialed Qiu Lingshan's number.
In fact, this entire floor was made up of luxury private rooms, each with its own restroom, so the public restroom saw hardly anyone. Apart from the waiters, guests almost never passed up what was near at hand to seek what was far away.
"Wei Zhao!" Getting his call, Qiu Lingshan felt a strange, unaccountable delight. Though she did not know what he wanted, her instincts told her it had to be good news!
"There is a Binjia Village north of the city. You should keep a close eye on it." Wei Zhao wasted no words and passed straight on to Qiu Lingshan what he had overheard from An Jianwen.
"Binjia Village?" Qiu Lingshan froze, but in the next instant she understood what he meant! Did that mean it was the kidney-harvesting ring's next target? A thrill ran through her, and though she wondered how Wei Zhao had gotten the information, she was clever enough not to ask.
She had seen Wei Zhao's extraordinariness with her own eyes, and as an obedient, likable silly chick, Qiu Lingshan knew he would certainly dislike her pestering him all day like a walking 'One Hundred Thousand Whys.'
"All right, I have something to do. Hanging up now." Hearing faint footsteps in the corridor, Wei Zhao said to Qiu Lingshan quickly.
"Thank you! The silly chick will treat you to dinner another day. You really did her a huge favor!" Qiu Lingshan said in a sweet and lovely voice.
Wei Zhao gave no answer and hung up directly.
Staring at the call-ended notice on her phone, Qiu Lingshan ground her teeth in fury. When had she ever humbled herself like this? And Wei Zhao still could hardly be bothered with her! Yet in the next moment her anger deflated, for who had told her to need a favor from Wei Zhao?
Forget it. She would just take it as lovers' teasing, and luckily no third person knew! Qiu Lingshan comforted herself so.
Only by thinking that way could she feel a little more balanced. Otherwise, why should she have been so meek and submissive?
