Chapter 1595 — The Fall of a Supreme

The Herdsman of the Wasteland · Page 1 of 4

In Jingping, a young girl walked with light, springing steps through the ice and snow of Jingping's northern frontier, humming a little tune. Her skin was whiter than snow, and she was wrapped in a white sable fur; the northern frontier was cold, a world of ice and snow, yet none of it was as white and tender as her skin. She came to Shuofang City.

Shuofang was a city of bitter cold; at first Jingping's territory had not reached so far, and only later, in the course of opening new lands, had Shuofang been founded in that frozen waste.

Here ice and snow never melted the year round; even those possessed of divine powers were unwilling to linger long. As far as the eye could see, beyond white snow and icebergs there were only the huge strange beasts of Shuofang roaming the ice plains, and traces of the past were seldom seen.

As an important divine city of the northern frontier, Shuofang was protected by a deity, and so it was not exactly desolate. From afar one could see Jingping's deity standing amid the ice and snow, like a stone statue, yet radiating a blazing heat that sheltered the region and kept Shuofang's weather from being quite so harsh. The girl strode quickly into Shuofang and found the city bustling; because of the deity's protection, a great many people had gathered here, and trade flourished.

Whether human or of other races, all wore thick cloaks and garments of fur, looking rather bulky, yet somehow all the more bold and spirited for it.

The people of Shuofang loved strong liquor, the stronger the better. The girl tasted some too, and felt a line of fire run down her throat; she could not help sticking out her tongue and running out of the tavern, from which a burst of laughter followed her. The girl was full of curiosity, wandering to and fro through Shuofang and taking in its peculiar sights.

Suddenly she saw a huge slide carved from ice, and with a cheer she ran over, slid down it, and let out a clear, ringing laugh. She was sweet-faced, fair and charming, and lively besides, drawing the gaze of many a youth. After playing a while, the girl took out a roll of golden paper, opened it with a swish, looked at it, then rolled it shut again, and waved excitedly at a youth: "Wei Shijie! Are you Wei Shijie?

" The youth was stalwart in build yet fine-featured; hearing this he smiled. "Do you know me, miss? " "I don't.

The Book of Life and Death does. " The girl's brows and eyes curved as she smiled. "Wei Shijie, borrowed body of the Great Emperor of the Juyu clan, lurking here in Shuofang.

Your affair has come to light.

I have come by the Emperor's command to put you to death. Wait a moment, let me find the Emperor's writ. " She rummaged about and at last found the imperial edict of Emperor Yanxiu, Ling Yuxiu; she unrolled it with a swish and said, beaming, "Found it!

Everyone, please step aside, so no innocent is hurt!

" The youths around scattered with a clatter, fleeing far away.

Wei Shijie glanced about him, gathered his cloak, and sneered. "Emperor Yanxiu sent you? I doubt it.

Would Emperor Yanxiu dare lay a hand on me? Where is Mu Tianzun?

Tell him to come out!

" The girl put away the edict and smiled. "Uncle Shen knows nothing of this; it was the Emperor who sent me. Uncle Shen is very busy—how would he have time to concern himself with your affairs?

The Emperor got the news from Daluo Heaven. " Her accent carried the charm of the Western Lands, soft and sweet, making one wish she would keep talking forever. "My name is Xiong Qi'er.

Great Emperor, I ask for your instruction.

" The girl bowed, revealing the sword case on her back.

Wei Shijie gave a cold snort, then suddenly erupted, and with his first move displayed a terrifying, domineering divine might!
