Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu had not gone out either, but were squeezed together watching an MP4 player showing the cartoon "Pleasant Goat and Big Big Wolf", a cartoon that seemed very childish to Wei Zhao, yet the two girls watched it with great relish, bursting into laughter from time to time.
Of course, the boys in the class who were reading and studying not only took no offense, but felt the laughter of the two girls was like heavenly music, adding a fresh brightness to their dull life of study.
But the girls did not see it that way, with jealousy, contempt, even disdain, though some were indifferent, yet no matter what they felt, most of them still envied the outstanding grace of Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu.
Wei Zhao returned to his seat, and Shen Yushu, who was watching the MP4, looked up and glanced at him for a moment, then lowered her head again to go on watching the cartoon.
Kang Xiaobo was quietly working on his exercises, while Wei Zhao flipped rather boredly through the senior-year textbooks.
Before the first class of the afternoon, Zhong Yongliang came back in a change of clothes, with Gao Xiaofu and Zhang Naipao beside him, both also changed, their hair still not quite dry, clearly having just taken a shower.
As he entered the classroom, Zhong Yongliang shot a hateful look toward Wei Zhao, but said nothing more and went straight back to his own seat.
Today Zhong Yongliang had lost face utterly, especially before the girl he loved most, and it was the greatest humiliation he had ever suffered in his life, and he swore to himself that he would never let Wei Zhao off.
That he did not move against Wei Zhao now was not because he was patient, but because class would begin in just over ten minutes, and the first period was the homeroom teacher Teacher Liu's class, so he did not want to cause trouble at this moment, planning instead to make trouble for Wei Zhao during study period.
At the sight of Zhong Yongliang, Shen Yushu could not help recalling how Wei Zhao had poured urine all over his head, and could not hold back a laugh of "chi", though thinking of Wei Zhao relieving himself made her blush a little.
Zhong Yongliang naturally heard Shen Yushu's mocking laugh, and felt a sting in his heart, and if it had been anyone else he would have slapped them across the face, but with Shen Yushu, he did not dare.
Others did not know, but Zhong Yongliang knew Shen Yushu's background very well, for he knew Wu Xiaocan, the tyrant of the previous senior class, who had begun pursuing Shen Yushu as soon as school started in his first year, and after being rejected several times, Wu Xiaocan's thoughts had begun to turn crooked.
During a school-organized movie screening, Wu Xiaocan seized the chance to sit beside Shen Yushu and tried to paw at her, but he did not succeed, and instead got two hard slaps across the face from Shen Yushu.
Afterward, Wu Xiaocan openly bragged around the school that Shen Yushu had been dumped by him, that he had grown tired of playing with her and thrown her away, even saying vile things, claiming that Shen Yushu had once had an abortion for him.
Of course, most people understood that Wu Xiaocan was just crying sour grapes, hearing his words but not believing them, yet though no one believed him, for a time Shen Yushu was still thrust into the eye of the storm.
Shen Yushu had never suffered such an insult, so she confronted Wu Xiaocan to argue it out and even slapped him hard in public, whereupon Wu Xiaocan issued a vicious threat, telling Shen Yushu to watch out after school, for he would get men to gang-rape her.
This matter later reached Shen Yushu's brother Chen Yuming, on a winter afternoon, and Zhong Yongliang could never forget the scene of that day.
A Land Rover stopped at the school gate, and a tall, powerfully built young man got out of the car and went straight to Wu Xiaocan, who was playing football on the field.
