Wei Zhao had come out this time mainly to buy a cell phone, so he went straight to the phone counter. He had seen that both Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu used Nokia E7s, and he had rather taken a liking to them too, so he simply picked out a Nokia E7. He paid a few thousand yuan for calling credit, and the phone came free.
When Wei Zhao was about to pay, Uncle Qing beat him to it, swiping his card, and said with a smile, "These are daily necessities. They ought to be provided by us."
Hearing Uncle Qing say this, Wei Zhao did not argue with him. After all, those few thousand yuan were a large sum to him, but to Uncle Qing and Gu Pengzhan they were not worth mentioning.
Uncle Qing might have been only a driver, but he was a driver who held shares in the Gu Group. Few though they were, they were enough to show the place he held in Gu Pengzhan's eyes.
After the phone was bought, the traffic on the street grew heavier; it was exactly the rush hour now. Uncle Qing smiled wryly: "Looks like we'll be losing quite a bit of time again. But Mr. Lin, how is it that you're so well acquainted with Director Wang from the school?"
"When I went to report yesterday, we chatted a bit and hit it off. He left me his number and told me to come to him if I ever needed anything," Wei Zhao said with a smile.
"I see." Uncle Qing did not quite believe it, but since Wei Zhao would not say more, he could hardly press him.
At last they arrived at the First People's Hospital, though by then it was already half past eight in the morning; the drive had taken about an hour.
They found Dr. Sun Weimin, the same one as yesterday. Sun Weimin was delighted to see Wei Zhao and looked at him with a beaming smile: "Here comes our little hero! You're recovering fast, I see — walking already! Anyone else would still be on crutches."
"Dr. Sun, please don't call me a little hero. It sounds a bit awkward. Besides, I'm no hero." Wei Zhao felt a little embarrassed under Sun Weimin's gaze; there was something not quite right about that smile.
"A hero you are, and a hero you'll be!" Sun Weimin waved a hand, every inch the elder, and laughed: "It's just that you youngsters are a bit too romantic. That business with the policewoman yesterday... it's become quite the talk of the hospital. Even the police beauty is smitten with our little hero!"
"Huh?" Wei Zhao broke into a sweat. No way? People said news traveled fast on campus — did it travel just as fast in a hospital?
"Haha, all right, I'll stop teasing you!" Sun Weimin wrote out a medical order with a smile and handed it to Wei Zhao. "Take this to the surgical treatment room."
"Okay." Wei Zhao hurriedly took the order and fled Sun Weimin's office as if escaping, cold sweat on his back. If word of today's business reached that girl Qiu Lingshan, there would be hell to pay. Last night he had coaxed and cajoled her until she had nothing left to say; if she thought it over again, wouldn't she come looking to settle accounts with him? The thought gave Wei Zhao a headache.
The surgical treatment room was just ahead of the surgical clinic. Wei Zhao knocked, and a very gentle voice came from inside: "Come in."
Heh heh, nurses always had the sweetest voices! Wei Zhao pushed the door open carelessly and walked in: "Hello, I'm here to have my dressing changed."
"Ah!" The nurse in the treatment room looked up with a start of pleasant surprise and stared at Wei Zhao as he came in. "You... you're all right?"
"What do you mean, I'm all right? I haven't had my dressing changed yet." Wei Zhao was baffled. The nurse was quite pretty — round face, big eyes — but surely she wasn't some lunatic?
"You... you don't recognize me?" Guan Xin pouted with a wounded air, looking pitifully at Wei Zhao.
Yesterday had been the first payday of Guan Xin's life. She was overjoyed — at last she was independent, and no one in the family could call her that money-grubbing little girl anymore!
