Wei Zhao went upstairs and came to the door of Class Five, Senior Three. He glanced in through the window beside the door: it was a study period, and no teacher was in the room.
Wei Zhao pushed the door open and walked straight in. A good many heads lifted, and once the owners of those heads saw that it was Wei Zhao, they bent back down to their own work. Senior year was a tense time; no one cared to mind anyone else's business.
Shen Yushu poked Gu Mengyao, who sat beside her. "Sister Yaoyao, Shield Bro's here."
"So he's here. What is that to me?" Gu Mengyao frowned, a little displeased by Shen Yushu's reaction. "Xiaoshu, why do you pay him so much attention? Don't tell me you have actually fallen for him."
"A living, breathing person walked into the classroom. I looked up and there he was." Shen Yushu shrugged. "Since he has nothing to do with you, I won't mention him again."
"..." Gu Mengyao opened her mouth, said nothing, shook her head at herself, and went back to the review materials in her hands.
Watching her, Shen Yushu gave a faint smile and turned to her own affairs.
"Xiaoshu, what do you make of this Wei Zhao? He slips off first thing in the morning to have his dressing changed, so how is it he only turns up in the afternoon? He hasn't gone and hooked up with Qiu Lingshan again, has he?" Gu Mengyao suddenly turned her head and asked.
"Huh? I thought you had stopped paying attention to him?" Shen Yushu looked at Gu Mengyao with a smile.
"My daddy paid good money to bring him here as my shield. He is supposed to stay dutifully at my side. If he goes running off and carrying on, of course I am unhappy about it." Gu Mengyao did not know herself why she suspected Wei Zhao, but she had found herself a fine excuse: her father had hired Wei Zhao with money, so he owed it to that pay to behave.
"Then go talk to him. Tell him he is not allowed to be fickle, that he can only be a shield for you." Shen Yushu made the suggestion very casually.
"What do you mean, for me alone?" A flush of red rushed into Gu Mengyao's face. "Xiaoshu, the way you put things is so wicked, so full of double meanings."
"He is yours alone to begin with. It was your daddy who hired him, not mine." Shen Yushu said it as a matter of course. "And if you think that is improper, then let him be my shield too. We may have no use for one in high school anymore, but who knows, we might in university."
"Get out of here. You have your brother. What do you need a shield for?" Gu Mengyao laughed, though she felt vaguely uncomfortable, especially since it was as if Shen Yushu were trying to snatch away something of hers.
When Wei Zhao came into the classroom, Zhong Yongliang shrank his neck out of reflex. His father had already given him a thorough tongue-lashing and told him to behave himself from now on. As he saw it, all of this was Wei Zhao's doing.
But he also knew that with his bare hands he was no match for Wei Zhao. And not bare hands alone: even Brother Panther, with a pistol in his hand, was no match for Wei Zhao. That kid was a monster.
So Zhong Yongliang wanted revenge, and he knew he could no longer use the old, ordinary methods. He was waiting for his chance, a chance to teach Wei Zhao a lesson by other means.
As for Kang Xiaobo, Zhong Yongliang had thought it over carefully after going home yesterday. Since Wei Zhao protected him so fiercely, he might as well let the kid off. If he beat him up and then got beaten up by Wei Zhao in turn, the loss would far outweigh the gain.
"Hey, boss, you are finally here." Kang Xiaobo was thrilled to see Wei Zhao, and the moment Wei Zhao entered the classroom he waved at him.
"What are you doing, sitting there waving? You think you are the president?" Wei Zhao laughed and gave Kang Xiaobo a kick, then sat down in his own seat.
"Boss, you do not know, but Zhong Yongliang has been really low-key today. You were not here, and he did not come after me either," Kang Xiaobo said.
