Wang Xinyan was not afraid of them herself. This had never been her fault to begin with, and even if her father and grandfather came to know of it in the end, it would matter little. At worst she would take a scolding, and the matter could still be settled. But now that Wei Zhao was getting drawn into it, it would be troublesome indeed if these people turned on Wei Zhao.
Wang Xinyan was just about to say something to Wei Zhao when she saw that he had already turned away.
Wei Zhao gave a nod. Say what one would, he was already entangled in this mess, so he had to find a way to get Wang Xinyan clear of it. The man called Liu Tianyi seemed to have some sense of reason, but the woman called Huiru had fastened herself onto Wang Xinyan and would not let go.
Wei Zhao glanced at the old man lying on the ground. There was no trace of external injury on his body, nor any obvious scrape on the front of Wang Xinyan's car. Just as Wang Xinyan had said, she had likely never struck the old man at all. He had fallen to the ground by himself.
The old man's right hand pressed against his chest as he lay in a twisted posture, yet after a couple of glances Wei Zhao had roughly discerned the cause. It must have been a heart ailment of some sort that had flared and brought him down, not a collision. Wang Xinyan's car happening to pass by was nothing but coincidence.
Wei Zhao stooped and set his fingers to the old man's wrist.
"What are you doing? Don't touch him! Are you trying to kill my father?" Huiru had been quiet for barely a moment, and the instant she saw Wei Zhao lay hands on the old man, she exploded again and rushed at Wei Zhao with teeth bared and claws out.
"Myocardial ischemia? Angina?" Wei Zhao knitted his brows and lifted his head.
"Huiru, stop making a scene!" At Wei Zhao's words, Liu Tianyi's eyes brightened at once. He seized his wife and pulled her aside, his face full of hope. He was no fool. Wei Zhao had spoken his father's ailment after merely feeling his pulse, so Liu Tianyi naturally took Wei Zhao for a doctor. "Little brother, are you a doctor?"
Wei Zhao did not answer Liu Tianyi's question directly. "Your father fell because angina was triggered by myocardial ischemia. He was not hit by her car."
"You are talking nonsense!" Huiru's expression changed as she pointed at Wei Zhao and cursed him.
"Fine, say I am talking nonsense. With the ambulance coming at this pace, your old father can just wait to die." Wei Zhao curled his lip and rose to his feet. "In any case, once he is dead there will be a forensic examination, and it will have nothing to do with my friend."
With a crisp smack, Liu Tianyi slapped Huiru hard across the face. "You wretched woman, shut your mouth! If you had not been so busy with your makeup before we left and had remembered to bring Father's medicine as I told you, would he be like this?"
"You... you dare hit me?" Disbelief filled Huiru's eyes. Her husband had been meek as a lamb before her for most of his life, yet today he had struck her across the face in public.
Liu Tianyi paid his wife no heed at all and turned to Wei Zhao with sincere eyes. "Little brother, can you save my father? Yes, you surely can. My wife is just this way, please do not take offense. I beg you to lend your aid..."
Liu Tianyi was not a reckless man. Though Wei Zhao was young, to name his father's sudden illness in a single sentence could be no ordinary feat. With no emergency medicine at hand, whether his father could even last until the ambulance arrived was an open question, so Liu Tianyi could only treat a dying horse as if it might yet live. Having glimpsed a thread of hope, he would naturally not let it slip.
Wei Zhao studied Liu Tianyi and judged him to be sincere enough, and that slap he had given his wife had been manly enough as well, so Wei Zhao slowly nodded. "I will try."
