But when Qiu Lingshan saw the castle piled up on the sand, the words on the tip of her tongue were swallowed back down. Playing so happily—surely she needed no comforting... Yet Shen Yushu's next words left Qiu Lingshan rather speechless.
"Sister Lingshan, you got here so fast! My castle isn't even finished yet..." Shen Yushu gazed at her handiwork with reluctance, and came over most unwillingly.
Qiu Lingshan wanted to curse, but held it in. Looking at Shen Yushu's little eyes darting this way and that, she knew the girl had done it on purpose. This little minx had never liked her, not since they were children—and all because she had turned down her brother's courtship?
If she didn't like him, was she not allowed to refuse? Qiu Lingshan's head ached. A young girl's mind was impossible to fathom. When she went looking for a boyfriend, did she have to pick the girl's brother?
Besides, it was a fact that he couldn't beat her. Why should she choose a man weaker than herself? If trouble came later, would she be protecting him, or he her?
"Give me your phone." Qiu Lingshan was still fuming when she heard Wei Zhao ask her for her phone.
"Huh? What for?" Qiu Lingshan was startled, but handed the phone over anyway. She had called Wei Zhao earlier and his phone had been off, so by reflex she assumed his battery was dead and that he wanted to borrow hers to make a call.
But after taking the phone, Wei Zhao did not make a call. He brought up the camera and fired off shot after shot of the sand castle Shen Yushu had built—left, right, from every angle, missing nothing.
"Wow, Arrow Brand, you're so good! Now we can keep it as a souvenir." Shen Yushu was thrilled, and ran over to stand beside her castle. "Arrow Brand, take a picture of us together."
"You—what are you taking pictures of that for?" Qiu Lingshan had not expected Wei Zhao to use her phone for this, and her temper flared at once. "Wei Zhao, have you got nothing better to do?"
"When you get back, send me the photos by MMS, or just send them straight to my phone's inbox." Wei Zhao did not answer her question, and handed the phone back.
"No time." Qiu Lingshan was about to explode. Using her phone to photograph Shen Yushu was one thing, but a whole pile of castle shots? If she went along and sent them, what would that make her? Qiu Lingshan had always cut a forceful figure in the compound; before anyone, she was like a proud princess. She and Shen Yushu had been at odds for years over the matter of Chen Yutian. How could Qiu Lingshan possibly send her photos? If she did, where would her face be?
"No time, is it? Fine. Next time you come looking for me, you'd better consider whether I have time." Wei Zhao shrugged indifferently and turned to go, unconcerned.
Qiu Lingshan ground her silver teeth, stamped hard on the sand, and spat out two words with hatred: "I'll send them."
"Heh..." Wei Zhao smiled. He had known this tigress would give in.
Shen Yushu, though, stared wide-eyed, looking at Wei Zhao and Qiu Lingshan as if she could not believe her eyes. Earlier, when she had asked Wei Zhao to photograph her with the sand castle, it had only been to needle Qiu Lingshan. In her view, with Qiu Lingshan's temper, she would never send the photos—and even if Shen Yushu pressed her later, Qiu Lingshan, unable to bear the loss of face, would only say she had deleted them by accident.
So when Wei Zhao told Qiu Lingshan to send the photos and Qiu Lingshan said "No time," it was exactly what Shen Yushu had expected, and she saw nothing amiss in it. That Wei Zhao could take Qiu Lingshan's phone and photograph her with the sand castle was already impressive enough; it had given Shen Yushu plenty of face. After all, which of the men around Qiu Lingshan would dare use her phone for something so pointless?
