"Life-Extending Detox Pills?" Kang Xiaobo repeated the name, somewhat startled. "How come I've never heard of such a thing?"
"A miracle doctor gave them to me. There aren't many," Wei Zhao said. "Once you take one of these pills, the impurities and toxins accumulated in the body are rapidly expelled, achieving the effect of prolonging life. Take one, and you can extend your lifespan by five to ten years!"
"My god! Something that good? That can't be, leader — with something this fine, why give it to him?" Kang Xiaobo's words left Tang Yun and Xiaofen in the car speechless.
"Isn't he your second grandfather?" Wei Zhao was speechless too.
"That's true enough, but he hasn't treated my family well all these years. With something this good, I'd rather keep it for myself... rather give it to Xiaofen!" Kang Xiaobo had meant to say he would eat it himself, but thinking of Xiaofen beside him, he said this instead.
Xiaofen was somewhat moved, but she still said: "We're young; we don't need to take this, do we?"
"Xiaofen is right!" Wei Zhao nodded. "You're young — even if you detoxify, there isn't much to expel. It's especially effective for the elderly."
"So that's how it is!" Kang Xiaobo saw the light at once. "But even so, giving a good thing like this to him would be a waste — better to keep it for yourself!"
"When the time comes for you to take it, I'll have more; I've saved some for you." Wei Zhao smiled. "This one, though, is still for your second grandfather."
"All right..." Kang Xiaobo looked at the pill with a pang of regret. "Leader, you're not lying to me, are you? Is this thing really that miraculous?"
"It isn't miraculous — there's a scientific basis for it. The more toxins accumulate in the body, the greater the harm to the body, especially for older people; if a person doesn't take care in youth, the toxins in the body pile up more and more." Wei Zhao explained: "What this thing does is expel the toxins from the body. As for any other effect — there really isn't one."
"I see!" Kang Xiaobo nodded in understanding. "All right, then — for the sake of his being my second grandfather, he can have it."
Wei Zhao drove toward Donghai City, the provincial capital. Donghai was the seat of the province, not far from Songshan City but not exactly near either — about three hours' drive.
Wei Zhao's beat-up van could not go very fast. Where other cars took a little over three hours, Wei Zhao had to drive more than four. There was no helping it: the van simply would not pick up speed, and when it did, it was liable to rattle itself apart.
By the time the four of them reached Donghai City, the provincial capital, it was already past six in the evening.
"Where do we go now?" Once off the expressway, Wei Zhao was utterly lost — he knew nothing at all about the provincial capital, Donghai.
"Wait, let me call and ask!" Kang Xiaobo signaled Wei Zhao to pull the car over to the roadside, then dialed his parents' number.
