Chapter 54 — The Wild Mage's Legacy

Blade of Dawn Page 2 of 2

Rebecca immediately stopped bouncing, thought it over with tremendous seriousness, and then looked at Gao Yang timidly. "Then... if I break it, will you hit me?"

Gao Yang: "...Never mind. Hetty, you'd better do it..."

But before he could finish, Rebecca mustered her courage, puffed out her chest, and declared loudly: "But I still want to try!"

Gao Yang regarded the girl with interest. "Oh?"

"This circle... this circle looks so interesting to me. I feel like there are lots of places that are... that are really good, and maybe I could... could..." Rebecca suddenly began to stammer, and after several "coulds" without managing a follow-up, she simply gritted her teeth and barreled on. "Even though I can only cast Fireball, my theoretical knowledge is really good! My calculating ability is really good too! Besides, Aunt Hetty has been so busy lately, and I haven't done anything except survey the land and help everyone burn off the fields. I feel like..."

Watching Rebecca's nervousness, Gao Yang couldn't help laughing. He looked at Hetty. "Hetty, what do you think?"

"Rebecca's theoretical knowledge and calculating ability really are strong. In fact, setting aside spellcasting ability—the most important item—her natural gifts are better than mine," Hetty said, glancing at Rebecca with a hint of helplessness. "Of course, it would be nice if her temperament were a bit more steady."

"I'm definitely steady!" Rebecca thrust out her chest with all her might, yet her eyes were fixed straight on the blueprints Gao Yang had laid on the table—which made Gao Heng rather curious.

So he couldn't help asking, "You're very interested in this magic circle?"

"Yes," Rebecca said, scratching her hair. "Actually, a long time ago I thought about it too—if only those difficult magics could be made simpler. If spellcasting could be made simple, maybe I could cast spells other than Fireball... This circle has given me a lot of inspiration!"

Gao Yang stared straight at Rebecca, which gave the girl a thorough fright.

But a few seconds later, Gao Yang laughed. "Good. Then this task is yours."

Rebecca was overjoyed. "Really?!"

"Of course it's real," Gao Yang said, casually pulling another sheet of paper out from under the table—a rough sketch he had made of the "smithy." "Build it to this scale, so the entire courtyard can serve as the Magic Web's coverage area, and construct the first batch of furnaces here. You can take the materials needed for drawing the circle from the mountain vault; everything's ready-made there. The circle is large in scale, but it's a 'basic circle,' and I believe the ready-made magic-conducting metals in the vault and the quartz sand Philipian brought from Tanzan Town will be enough for you.

"As for this experimental Magic Web—let's call it Magic Web No. 1."

Rebecca, entrusted with this heavy responsibility, departed in high delight, while Hetty went off to continue instructing the serfs and commoners who had just arrived at the camp in pitching tents. For a time, only Gao Yang and Amber remained in the great tent.

"You look quite pleased?" The half-elf lady looked Gao Song up and down. "I never saw you this happy even when we got those documents out of the old king's hands. Is it because teasing your great-great-great-...-great-granddaughter is so entertaining?"

Gao Yang: "..."

Could this one die if she said something nice for once?
