Chapter 61 — The Girl I Could Never Forget

The Blossom Guardian

"Holy shit!" Yang Huaijun slapped his thigh and stared at Wei Zhao in amazement. "Now that's real skill. You really are my Hound's captain. After I was wounded, the army brought in Old Master Chen Xuezhi, the most famous expert in traditional Chinese medicine in the country. After he examined me, he said exactly the same thing."

"Chen Xuezhi?" Wei Zhao felt as if he had heard that name before, but he could not remember where.

"That's right. He's also the one who said I wouldn't live more than half a year." Yang Huaijun smiled. "He told me that if I wanted to die a little slower, I should stop trying to treat it and just hold on with painkillers. That might buy me a few more days."

"What kind of bullshit remedy is that?" Wei Zhao frowned when he heard this. "I'll go back and think over your illness and work out a plan for you as soon as I can. But first I can write you a prescription. It works better than Western painkillers, and the side effects aren't nearly as bad."

With that, Wei Zhao walked to Yang Huaijun's desk, took paper and pen, and quickly wrote out a prescription before handing it to him. "You'd better get this medicine yourself. Don't let anyone else know about it. And as for me, I don't want anyone to know. Let's leave the past unmentioned."

"Will it really work? Eagle, the surprises you've given me are just too great." Yang Huaijun took the prescription Wei Zhao handed him and stared blankly at the dense rows of Chinese medicinal names. This could not possibly have been made up on the spot. An ordinary person probably could not even write out the names of these herbs.

"I told you, don't call me Eagle. My name is Wei Zhao." Wei Zhao corrected him.

"All right, Wei Zhao." Yang Huaijun nodded and carefully tucked the prescription inside his coat. Since it had been written by his former captain and comrade-in-arms, Yang Huaijun trusted it unconditionally no matter what. At worst it would fail to cure him, and death would be the worst outcome anyway, and who knew how many days he had left to live. "You're a miracle worker, kid. No wonder Xiao Ning is so infatuated with you."

At the sound of that name, the smile on Wei Zhao's face froze in an instant. It was a long while before he looked up. "Does she... still remember me?"

"The last time I saw her, she asked about you." Yang Huaijun nodded with complete certainty.

"Maybe she was just asking casually..." Wei Zhao smiled bitterly. He and she were people from two entirely different worlds. There was no way their lives could intertwine, and even if they did, they were destined to part.

There had never been equality between people, and Wei Zhao understood that all too deeply. At least for now, he had no power to give her a future...

"Are you trying to shirk your responsibility?" Yang Huaijun suddenly grew agitated, glaring fiercely at Wei Zhao.

Yang Huaijun's strange reaction startled Wei Zhao slightly, but in an instant Wei Zhao seemed to understand something. "You... have feelings for her?"

"..." Under Wei Zhao's questioning, Yang Huaijun fell silent. After a long pause, he finally said, "Back then, there wasn't a single man in the suicide squad who didn't feel something for Xiao Ning..."

Even so, this was a roundabout admission of his own feelings.

"She and you would make a good match." Wei Zhao knew Yang Huaijun's background. He and she could be considered well matched in status.

"What exactly do you mean by that?" Yang Huaijun jumped up as if someone had stepped on a sore spot, his face dark with anger as he pointed at Wei Zhao. "What kind of man do you take me for? A friend's wife is not to be coveted. No matter how worthless I, Hound, may be, I could never do such a thing."

"She is not my wife." Wei Zhao shook his head and said lightly, "All right, I have to go. I'll leave the matter with Qiu Lingshan to you. I trust that won't be a problem."

With that, Wei Zhao rose and walked toward the door.

"I really feel like killing you." Yang Huaijun drove a fist toward the middle of Wei Zhao's back.

Wei Zhao did not even turn his head as he casually caught his arm. "As long as you can manage it."

Yang Huaijun knew the gap between himself and Wei Zhao was far from small. Dejected, he let the strength drain from his arm, and Wei Zhao released him at the same moment, opened the door, and walked out of Yang Huaijun's office.

Although Wei Zhao's expression showed no change, his thoughts drifted back of their own accord to those years torn by the flames of war... to the girl who had crossed his fate only to part from it.

Over the past two years, Wei Zhao had often jolted awake from his nighttime cultivation, drenched in sweat every time. This was something that had never happened to him since he began practicing the Xuanyuan Yulong Jue. But those melancholy eyes haunted him like an inner demon, returning again and again to fill his nights.

Every time he saw those reproachful, sorrowful eyes at their parting, Wei Zhao would wake from his cultivation before he knew it. It was a nightmare that repeated without end...

Had he truly forgotten her? Clearly not. She was the kind of girl no man could look at once and ever forget in his whole life... Yet Wei Zhao also understood clearly that her dazzling brilliance did not belong to him.

If the seventeen-year-old Wei Zhao had still carried a trace of wild pride, the present Wei Zhao understood far better how cold reality was. To seek her out would only bring trouble to her and those around her. With their families so unequal in standing, a nobody winning a princess happened only in novels. It was nonsense.

From the moment Wei Zhao was taken away by the police, Chief Chen's phone at the station had not stopped ringing. First it was Ding Binggong, the principal of No.1 High School. Chief Chen treated Ding Binggong's call with great care, promising him that the matter would definitely be investigated thoroughly.

But the callers who followed carried more and more weight. First it was Uncle Qing from Gu Pengzhan's side, and afterward Gu Pengzhan himself called personally to inquire.

Left with no choice, Chief Chen had to call Qiu Lingshan, urging her to close the case as quickly as possible. It had to be fair and just, leaving no room for gossip.

But the news he got from Qiu Lingshan was that the man had been taken away by Yang Huaijun, who had just returned. Chief Chen had no choice but to call Yang Huaijun instead.

"What? Already released?" Chief Chen was somewhat taken aback. Yang Huaijun had handled this far too fast.

"Yes. It was a gang of underworld thugs causing trouble at the school in the first place. It had nothing to do with Wei Zhao. Once I understood the situation, I sent him back." Yang Huaijun reported in his usual crisp and efficient tone.

"As long as everything is fine." Chief Chen breathed a sigh of relief. Now he could give an answer to both Ding Binggong and Gu Pengzhan.

When Qiu Lingshan learned that Yang Huaijun had released Wei Zhao, she was stunned for a long time. Yet in her heart she knew Wei Zhao bore no blame, for she had just gotten the whole story from two of Brother Black Panther's men. Brother Black Panther had gone looking for trouble first, and only then had Wei Zhao struck him.
