Chapter 93 — The Strange Dream: "Sister Yaoyao, What's Wrong?" Shen Yushu Was Startled to See Gu Mengyao Looking Ready to Cry, With No Idea What Was Wrong With Her
"It's nothing..." Gu Mengyao let out a faint sigh. "Xiaoshu, tell me, was I too harsh today?"
"Not at all." Shen Yushu caught a strange note in Gu Mengyao's words. Could she still be brooding over what happened today? Yaoyao had never seemed like such a sentimental person.
"Maybe... He doesn't care anyway..." Gu Mengyao shook her head.
"Sister Yaoyao... your paper?" Shen Yushu suddenly noticed that Gu Mengyao's test paper was densely covered with written-out steps to the solutions, and she cried out in surprise, "Did Brother Arrow write all this for you? He's really quite good to you."
When grading another person's paper, no one had any duty to write out the solutions to the wrong answers. Everyone had heard the teacher explain the problems in class and was supposed to make the corrections on their own after going home. Yet Wei Zhao had written out every step of the solutions for Gu Mengyao in detail, which surprised Shen Yushu and at the same time made her understand why Gu Mengyao was acting this way.
Gu Mengyao said nothing and gave her attention to the questions she had gotten wrong. Seeing her settle down to study in earnest, Shen Yushu also turned her attention back to her own paper.
To her surprise, Wei Zhao's steps were even more detailed than the teacher's? Gu Mengyao was startled. Wei Zhao seemed afraid she might not understand, for every step was laid out with extreme care, complete with notes. Beyond her surprise, she began to grow suspicious about who Wei Zhao really was.
Where on earth had her father found this man? The first time she saw him, she had taken him for a migrant laborer come to the city to find work. But how could a laborer possibly solve senior-year math problems?
When Gu Mengyao reached the final bonus question, she was surprised at first. Hadn't she solved that one herself? When Teacher Liu went over it, she had felt a little smug. So many students in the class had failed to solve it, yet she had gotten it right, and that had given her vanity a small satisfaction.
But after she finished reading Wei Zhao's steps, she could not help but freeze. It was a method she had never seen before, yet it was far simpler than her own.
A warmth rose unbidden in Gu Mengyao's heart. She knew Wei Zhao truly meant well for her and was not simply brushing her off. Otherwise he would never have needed to write out such a solution at all.
"Xiaoshu... look at the solution to this problem..." Gu Mengyao sighed and pushed her paper toward Shen Yushu.
"Hmm?" At first Shen Yushu thought Gu Mengyao had run into a problem she could not solve and wanted help. But when she saw the problem Gu Mengyao was pointing to and Wei Zhao's solution, her mouth fell open. "No way? Is Brother Arrow really that incredible? Not only is he great at fighting, he's this good at studying too? Sister Yaoyao, you hit the jackpot!"
"Hit the jackpot?" Gu Mengyao looked at Shen Yushu, puzzled.
"Where else would you find a guy like that? You have to strike first, or someone else will snatch him up," Shen Yushu said.
"..." Gu Mengyao pressed her lips together, then said with some disdain, "Him? Who would ever want him?"
"Hehe..." Shen Yushu grinned slyly. "Plenty of people. Just wait and see if you don't believe me."
After finishing his food, Wei Zhao tossed the two ribs he had left uneaten to General Mighty. He had meant to save them to have with noodles the next morning, but then he remembered that tomorrow was the weekend and Uncle Qing had said he would take care of all three meals. Besides, Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu were sure to sleep in, so there was no need for him to get up early to make breakfast.
Back in his own room, Wei Zhao collapsed onto the bed. So much had happened today, and he had spent the afternoon tensely brewing medicine for Yang Huaijun. He felt truly tired, and once he lay down, he did not want to get up again.
Skipping practice for one day should be all right, shouldn't it? Wei Zhao hesitated... Ever since he had come out of that strange cave, he had never slept. Every night had been spent in cultivation, though fortunately a few hours of practice left him as refreshed as ten hours of sleep.
Back home, no matter how tired he was, Old Man Wei had always stood beside him watching, and Wei Zhao had never dared to slack off. While on missions, he had to stay alert at all times and had never dared to truly fall asleep.
A situation like the present one, however, was something he had never known. With no old man pressing him on and no danger at his side, Wei Zhao felt like stealing a little rest.
Sure enough, comfort soon made a man grow lazy.
Wei Zhao sighed. But today he really was exhausted, and he did not want to cultivate. He only wanted a sound, peaceful sleep.
Faintly, Wei Zhao seemed to drift into an empty void, a world of total darkness...
Wei Zhao was instantly on guard. What place was this? Could he be dreaming?
Suddenly, as if in answer to his thought, the empty space blazed with dazzling light, bright as day.
And a human figure slowly condensed before him...
"Who... who are you?" Wei Zhao asked instinctively.
Dreams had not visited him for many years, and Wei Zhao had gradually forgotten what dreaming felt like... So was he dreaming now?
"My surname is Jiao..." The figure slowly solidified into the shape of an old man, with rather the air of a sage, who said calmly before Wei Zhao.
"What? Sexual intercourse?" Wei Zhao stared at the old man in astonishment... thinking, how can this fellow be even cruder than I am? Is that the first word out of his mouth? Could it be that I have watched too many dirty movies and my mind has been corrupted? That even my dreams are full of such filth?
"Uh..." The old man was at once embarrassed. "My humble surname is Jiao. Men call me Jiao Yazi. That is I."
"What? Stinky feet?" Wei Zhao was even more dumbfounded. What kind of dream was this? Was it supposed to be a joke?
Jiao Yazi was left speechless... No one had called him by that nickname for many years, yet this brat had blurted it out. He said with some displeasure, "It is Jiao Yazi, not stinky feet. You little child, you must not be rude to this old man."
"Sorry, Old Jiao... I misheard you just now..." Wei Zhao felt rather embarrassed, though he thought to himself that this was only a figure in a dream, so he hardly needed to take it so seriously.
"Do you think you are dreaming?" Jiao Yazi seemed to see right through Wei Zhao's thoughts and looked at him with a cold laugh.
"Huh? Am I not?" Wei Zhao froze, looking at Jiao Yazi in confusion.
"Then pinch yourself and see if it hurts?" Jiao Yazi looked at Wei Zhao with mockery. "Who would have thought that back then my martial grand-uncle sealed a wisp of my apparition inside this jade pendant to await the destined one, only to end up waiting for a fool like you."
