Chapter 142 — Another Wasted Trip

The Blossom Guardian

Still — that villain had real nerve, to dare make a pass at even Gu Mengyao! No one had ever heard of anyone making a pass at Gu Mengyao before!

Half the time had already slipped away, and class was about to begin. Tang Yun had no choice but to go back to her classroom first — she would come again after this period. Just now, with the three school beauties standing together, they had drawn no small number of sideways glances. Tang Yun did not want to stand there and be suspected of something, so she hurried back to her own classroom...

Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu had gone to the end of the corridor to look at the scenery for a while. When the bell rang, the two of them turned back — and saw that Tang Yun was gone.

"Sister Yaoyao, Tang Yun left," Shen Yushu said.

"I saw... Xiaoshu, what do you think she wanted with Wei Zhao?" Gu Mengyao had been turning that very question over the whole time she stood looking at the scenery.

"My guess is she wanted to borrow money," Shen Yushu said offhandedly. How could she possibly know?

"Borrow money?" Gu Mengyao's eyes went wide. Tang Yun, borrowing money from Wei Zhao?

"I'm just guessing," Shen Yushu said with a sly little grin.

"You're impossible!" Gu Mengyao rapped her on the head. "Forget it, never mind. Let's go back."

"How about, when she comes again, I ask her for you?" Shen Yushu blinked. "Or I could go find her in her classroom?"

"Don't you dare!" Gu Mengyao glared at Shen Yushu. "Xiaoshu, are you doing this on purpose?"

"Hehe..." Shen Yushu only smiled, and said nothing.

And so Tang Yun stood at the door of Class Five, secretly peering inside. She poked her head in, found that she had drawn a great deal of attention, and bashfully shrank back at once.

Everyone had been speculating about the purpose of Tang Yun's visit. And then, when the second period ended, Tang Yun came again — which was rather strange.

Shen Yushu looked up and happened to catch the sight of Tang Yun drawing her head back, and found it odd. Could she have come looking for Wei Zhao again? Glancing at Gu Mengyao beside her, who was reading with complete absorption, Shen Yushu rose on tiptoe and slipped out of the classroom.

"Hey!" Shen Yushu saw Tang Yun standing off to one side with her head lowered, looking flustered; she walked up and waved a hand before her eyes.

"Ah..." Tang Yun jumped. Lifting her head, she saw that it was Shen Yushu. "W-what is it?"

"You're Tang Yun, right? I'm Shen Yushu." Shen Yushu introduced herself, though Tang Yun surely knew her name already. "You've come looking for Wei Zhao again, haven't you?"

"I..." Tang Yun did not know why Shen Yushu was asking, or whether she bore Wei Zhao any ill will. Still, she nodded. "Mm..."

"Oh. Wei Zhao isn't here — he hasn't been in all morning..." Shen Yushu said. "If there's something you need, shall I pass the message along for you? I'm the study committee member, you know. Helping classmates is my duty and my responsibility."

"He... didn't come?" Tang Yun looked at Shen Yushu in astonishment. Surely she wouldn't lie to her? That very morning she had ridden the same bus to school as Wei Zhao, and he had taken advantage of her the whole way. Could all of that have been her imagination?

"He didn't." Shen Yushu nodded. "If you don't believe me, take a look for yourself — he sits in the last seat of the second row. See? There's no one there."

"Oh." Since Shen Yushu said so, Tang Yun no longer doubted that she was lying, especially when she said she was the study committee member. A class officer wouldn't lie for no reason, surely? Tang Yun was the study committee member of Class Nine herself, and with that, she felt a good deal closer to Shen Yushu.

"Right? So is there something you need?" Shen Yushu did not much care whether Wei Zhao showed up or not, nor was she so kind-hearted that she simply had to help a classmate. The crux of the matter was that she, too, was curious — what did Tang Yun want with Wei Zhao, what business did she have?

"I... it's nothing... Then I'll wait until he's back, and come again." Tang Yun hesitated. The matter of the formula was not something she could easily ask another person to relay; better to say it herself.

"Oh." Shen Yushu was a little disappointed, but she could hardly press Tang Yun. "Then come by again this afternoon and see..."

"Mm, thank you..." Tang Yun, also somewhat disappointed, turned and went back to her classroom. She had come twice now, and Wei Zhao was not only absent — he hadn't even come to school! What on earth was the matter with him? She had clearly gotten off the bus together with him!

When Shen Yushu returned to the classroom, she found that Gu Mengyao had already set down her book and was staring at her with sharp eyes. Shen Yushu felt a flicker of fear. "Sister Yaoyao, why are you looking at me like that?"

"Xiaoshu, where did you go?" Gu Mengyao had looked up a moment ago and found Shen Yushu gone; following her classmates' gazes and searching carefully, she had discovered that the girl had actually run off to the classroom door to talk with Tang Yun. She was furious — hadn't she told her not to go striking up conversations? Why wouldn't she listen? If Wei Zhao got wind of it, he'd think she cared about him so very much...

But, thoughts aside, Gu Mengyao still wanted very badly to know what Shen Yushu had managed to find out! If she asked her nicely and reasonably, that slippery little thing might not give her a proper answer; so Gu Mengyao put on a show of being angry — and sure enough, Shen Yushu confessed everything.

"I just asked her what she wanted with Brother Arrow..." Shen Yushu pouted. "But she wouldn't tell me either. All I could do was tell her Brother Arrow wasn't in, and that she should come back this afternoon."

"Oh..." Gu Mengyao nodded. "Who knows what that Wei Zhao is up to. He left a note this morning and just went off — what kind of attitude is that? My daddy's paying him for nothing. This is him skipping work!"

"Sister Yaoyao, I remember you used to think the farther away he stayed, the better. How did you change your mind so fast?" Shen Yushu asked, teasing.

"Well, well... it isn't easy for Daddy to earn money, and I ought to be worthy of the salary he pays, hadn't I?" Gu Mengyao hemmed and hawed, fishing up a shabby excuse that she herself hardly believed. Yet to admit that she no longer disliked Wei Zhao so much — that, she could not bring herself to say.

"So that's it. Then I'll tell Brother Arrow to be a little more devoted to his work." Shen Yushu nodded, looking wholly convinced.

"..." Gu Mengyao was speechless. Even that could be believed? She looked at Shen Yushu, who was quietly preparing for the next class, and it seemed to her that a faint sadness had flickered across the girl's brow...
