Chapter 171 — Threat: In the Early Morning Wei Zhao Was Startled Awake from Sleep by a Ringing Phone, and in These Past Few Days He Had Come to Know the Benefits of Sleep as a Great Replenishment for His Body's Energy
"Hello?" Wei Zhao mumbled as he picked up the phone, still half asleep.
"Wei Zhao?" A vaguely familiar voice came from the other end. "This is Qiu Lingshan."
"Oh, lioness, hello..." Wei Zhao murmured drowsily.
"What the hell? Wei Zhao, what did you call me?" Qiu Lingshan exploded at his words. "Say that again if you dare?" Wei Zhao had long thought Qiu Lingshan a little violent, so subconsciously he had nicknamed her the lioness, though he had never dared say it aloud while awake. Now, still half asleep, it had slipped right out from what he was thinking inside.
"Uh... I was dreaming, fighting a lioness!" Wei Zhao snapped fully awake, speaking with an embarrassed sweat. Even if he thought so in his heart, he could never say it out loud!
"Hmph!" Qiu Lingshan gave a cold snort. Though she knew Wei Zhao was probably making it up, she had no mind to tangle with him over this question. "Do you have time?"
"For what?" Wei Zhao asked.
"I will come to your school in a while. Captain Yang recommended you." Qiu Lingshan said. "Help me crack a case..."
Qiu Lingshan was truly out of options. Searching through the mountain forests was murderously difficult, and the dangerous stretches could never be combed man by man. After dragging on for days with no progress at all, she was helpless, and remembering Yang Huaijun's recommendation, she dialed Wei Zhao's number willing to give it a try.
To tell the truth, if Qiu Lingshan had not trusted Yang Huaijun absolutely like an elder brother, she would never have made this call. In her eyes, Wei Zhao was nothing but Gu Mengyao's bodyguard. What great ability could he possibly have?
"Heh..." Wei Zhao smiled faintly upon hearing that. Sure enough, Qiu Lingshan had come to him after all. "Sure, but you will have to get me leave first. I cannot skip class every day, can I?"
"Skip class every day? I am only borrowing you for one day, all right?" Qiu Lingshan fumed. "What does your usual truancy have to do with me?"
"Yesterday I skipped because of Brother Jun, and today because of you. Is it not all police business?" Wei Zhao said.
"Brother Jun? Captain Yang?" Qiu Lingshan froze. She had not expected Yang Huaijun to have sought Wei Zhao yesterday as well. She naturally did not think Wei Zhao would make such a thing up, for there was no need for him to lie about something she could verify with one phone call, so she said, "Fine, then I will speak to your dean first."
"All right, then wait for me at the snack street by the school. There is hardly anyone there in the morning." Wei Zhao climbed out of bed and got ready to dress.
Wei Zhao had originally planned to go to school today with Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu. After all, he had missed classes for several days on end for one matter or another. Although Wang Zhifeng would say nothing, his identity was still that of a student, and he could not keep making exceptions for himself, could he?
Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu had barely touched last night's dinner. Wei Zhao glanced at it and felt too embarrassed to eat it himself, so he left it for the two of them. In a while he would cadge a meal off Qiu Lingshan. Since she wanted his help, surely she would not begrudge him a meal?
In truth, even if Qiu Lingshan had not come to him, Wei Zhao had meant to dig out those kidnappers from that day. For no other reason than that, having already torn all pretense with Li Cihua, there was no need to indulge him. He would deal with these small fry first.
Leaving a note for Gu Mengyao to say he would be busy again today, Wei Zhao drove off in Shen Yushu's yellow Beetle. He wondered whether Uncle Qing had gotten his license back yet. If he had known, he would have had Yang Huaijun handle it directly, instead of making Uncle Qing go roundabout through connections.
Driving past the shantytown, Wei Zhao instinctively eased off the speed, only to see Tang Yun standing before the bus stop waiting for her bus. The little punk who had harassed Tang Yun yesterday was there too, dancing and chattering away at her with great animation. With so many people at the stop, he did not dare lay a hand on her.
Tang Yun kept a cold face and ignored him, but under his foul patter she grew uncomfortable.
Damn it! This brat still had not learned his lesson yesterday? Did his ass not hurt anymore?
Wei Zhao spun the wheel and slammed his foot on the gas, charging straight at the little punk. As the car swerved, the tires shrieked sharply against the pavement.
In the instant before striking the punk, Wei Zhao brought the car to a halt. A nimble little car like this answered to his every touch.
"Ah," the people waiting at the stop all jumped at the sight, and Tang Yun, standing beside the punk, went white with fright.
But no one was more terrified than the punk himself. Drenched in cold sweat now, he stared in horror at the car before him, at a loss for what to do. Once he was sure the car had not hurt him, he leapt out again, pointing at the driver's seat where Wei Zhao sat and cursing foully, "Fuck your mother! Can you drive or not? Are your eyes growing on the soles of your feet? Get down here! You tired of living or what?"
In that moment the punk's arrogant true colors came out again.
As he spoke he reached to yank open the door on Wei Zhao's side. Li Erlan was thinking that this car looked pretty good, like a Volkswagen Beetle that must cost over two hundred thousand. This time he could surely squeeze three or five thousand out of the driver.
Wei Zhao's doors locked automatically while driving, so Li Erlan naturally could not pull it open. Just as he was about to give up, Wei Zhao suddenly shoved the door open outward, knocking Li Erlan staggering so that he sat down hard on the ground again. It tugged at yesterday's old wound, and he clutched his backside and howled.
"Your injury has not even healed? I thought you forgot the pain as soon as the scar faded. After playing superman off the bus yesterday, you still have not learned your lesson?" Wei Zhao was undeniably overbearing now.
"You... so it was you yesterday!" Hearing Wei Zhao's words, Li Erlan understood at once. No wonder this kid had driven straight at him. It had been him yesterday too.
"Heh, you are not so dumb, just a screw loose in that head." Wei Zhao shot Li Erlan a cold look. "Stay away from Tang Yun from now on. If I catch you again, you will not get off so lightly."
Whatever else, the whole school now knew Tang Yun was his girlfriend. Whether true or false, he could not leave her affairs alone. In fact, even without this storm, Wei Zhao would still have looked after Tang Yun's troubles.
"Oh, so you are Tang Yun's guardian angel?" Li Erlan laughed instead. "Hey, Tang Yun lives in the shantytown. I would like to see you watch her every day. We will settle the old debts and the new ones together then, right, Tang Yun?"
