Chapter 317 — I Don't Understand a Word You're Saying
"What Tang Yun? She doesn't even own a phone!" Wei Zhao shot Kang Xiaobo a glare. "It's the weather forecast."
"Oh..." At that, Kang Xiaobo remembered that Wei Zhao had said he would take Tang Yun to buy a phone at noon today, and that he himself had been planning to buy one for Xiaofen as well.
At noon the same four — Wei Zhao, Tang Yun, Kang Xiaobo, and Liu Xinwen — left the school together. Now that Wei Zhao had that beat-up van, there was naturally no need to take a taxi again; the car was nothing much to look at, but better than nothing, and a good deal more convenient besides.
"Tang Yun, Kang Xiaobo wants to buy Xiaofen a phone so the two of them can keep in touch more easily. What about you?" Wei Zhao asked, driving, of Tang Yun in the passenger seat.
This time Kang Xiaobo had very willingly given the seat up to Tang Yun, and sat in the back with Liu Xinwen himself.
"Me? I'm not buying one... A phone would be no use to me anyway..." Tang Yun shook her head. Given her family's circumstances, where would she find spare money for a phone?
The phone itself wasn't very expensive, but buying one meant buying a SIM card, and there was a monthly fee on top of that — no small expense. So Tang Yun refused outright.
"The boss is paying!" Kang Xiaobo cut in. "Xiaofen's phone is a gift from the boss too. Sister-in-law, if you won't take one and he only buys one for Xiaofen, she definitely won't accept it! Please, do me a favor!"
Hearing that, Tang Yun couldn't help but snort with laughter — begging someone to let you buy them a phone... Yet it brought back that night on the night-market street, when Wei Zhao had bought her a dress and then afterward asked her for fifty yuan.
Thinking back on it... sometimes life was truly strange. Back then she had loathed him so much she wished him dead, and now here she sat quietly in his car, at his side...
In her anger, she had stuffed that dress into the wardrobe and never once worn it... But tonight, when she got home, she ought to be able to dig it out...
At the thought, Tang Yun couldn't help but smile behind pressed lips... If he had given her the dress back then, would she have accepted it? The answer was no. But now Wei Zhao wanted to buy her a phone, and after a few words of persuasion from Kang Xiaobo, she had tacitly agreed...
Wei Zhao parked in front of a phone shop, and the four of them got out together.
Seeing that all four wore school uniforms and knowing they were students, the salesperson went straight to a few cheap models.
Kang Xiaobo happened to want a cheaper phone as well; he had no wish to make Wei Zhao spend a fortune on one of those smartphones costing several thousand.
"What price range did you have in mind?" the clerk asked.
Kang Xiaobo wanted to say two or three hundred yuan, but the decision still rested with Wei Zhao, so he turned to look at him.
Wei Zhao knew Kang Xiaobo wanted a cheap one — by his own reckoning of yesterday, a phone of two or three hundred would do — but he didn't want to buy Tang Yun anything too cheap. If he bought Xiaofen a two-hundred-yuan phone, then naturally he couldn't buy Tang Yun a pricey one... and treating them differently might give Xiaofen ideas, which would be no good at all.
"About a thousand yuan or so," Wei Zhao said after thinking it over. Tang Yun wouldn't accept anything too expensive, and this range ought to suit.
"How about the Nokia 5233? It's very popular among students — cheap and fully featured. It only lacks the GPS navigation of the 5230, but you students wouldn't need that anyway." The salesperson brought out a phone and introduced it to Wei Zhao and the others. "And it's cheaper than the 5230 — only 833 yuan."
"What do you think?" Wei Zhao pushed the phone over for Tang Yun to look at, seeking her opinion.
"It's nice... but isn't it a bit expensive..." Tang Yun still couldn't quite accept the fact of taking something from Wei Zhao. Kang Xiaobo had spent ages persuading her, and she still felt she shouldn't accept it...
"Heh." Wei Zhao smiled and said to the salesperson, "Then let's take three of this model."
"How about... buying that one from before, the three-hundred-something one?" Seeing that Wei Zhao was set on buying, Tang Yun hesitated, then pointed at a phone costing over three hundred.
"Come on... Kang Xiaobo is giving his to Xiaofen. Something too shabby, he wouldn't be able to give it with any face, would he?" Wei Zhao said in a low voice.
"Oh..." Tang Yun could only nod. Yet inside she felt a little stifled... She owed Wei Zhao more and more now... How was she ever to repay it?
The barbecue recipe, his standing up for her and her mother and driving off those rivals who wanted to bully them, Xiaofen's medical bills — Kang Xiaobo was part of that, true, but a good half of it was out of regard for her... So Tang Yun couldn't pretend she knew nothing about it...
He had saved her once more... and now he was going to buy her a phone. Tang Yun truly didn't know, at this rate, whether her relationship with Wei Zhao would grow more and more tangled. Did he really like her...
While she was still hesitating, Wei Zhao had already bought the three phones, and picked out two SIM cards as well — one with a number ending in Xiaofen's birthday, one ending in Tang Yun's birthday. Liu Xinwen had chosen them both.
Wei Zhao paid by card, then handed out the phones: one for Tang Yun, one for Kang Xiaobo. Liu Xinwen already had a rather old phone of her own, so there was no need to buy her one, and Wei Zhao kept the last for himself.
His previous phone, an expensive one, had broken as well, so this time Wei Zhao simply bought a cheap one... No matter how costly, a phone dropped in water was finished, and Wei Zhao's line of work was on the dangerous side, so he had simply chosen a cheap model.
If the phone he was using now — Shen Yushu's — hadn't been so utterly feminine, too embarrassing for him to take out in public, Wei Zhao would have just made do with it.
Tang Yun sighed softly... Let it be owed, then... She already owed so much; one phone more or less made no difference... Yet after getting into the car, she said to Wei Zhao in a voice barely audible, "Thank you..."
"Heh..." Wei Zhao laughed, turned his head, and looked at her with a teasing glint. "Then how will you thank me?"
"Wh—what do you mean, how will I thank you..." Tang Yun was startled, her face flushing red as she remembered what she had promised him yesterday in the hospital, and her heart began to race.
"Yesterday in the hospital, I believe you still owe me a kiss..." Wei Zhao said, lowering his voice.
Sure enough, that was what he meant. Tang Yun was mortified. "Wh—what, I don't know what you're talking about... I don't understand a word you're saying..."
"Heh..." Wei Zhao turned away and started the car. Seeing how flustered and adorable Tang Yun looked, he couldn't bear to tease her further. To make this girl, who protected herself like a hedgehog, open her heart to him completely was truly no easy thing...
