Chapter 344 — Thank You, Brother-in-law
"It's like this, Grandpa Guan. I'll give you an account number — could you transfer two hundred thousand into it for me?" Wei Zhao passed on to Guan Xuemin the account number Tang Yun had sent him.
"Mm, all right. In a little while I'll have Xinxin transfer it for you through online banking." Guan Xuemin wrote the number down. He asked no questions about what Wei Zhao wanted the money for, and simply agreed.
"Then I'll have to trouble you, Grandpa Guan. As for the pharmaceutical company, I'll have some time in the next few days, so I'll come over and we can talk it through properly. I know nothing at all about that side of the business, so I'm afraid it will have to be your worry." Wei Zhao felt a little embarrassed: all he had supplied was a formula, and he would sit back and take a share of the profits.
"When it comes to running the thing — if you won't show your face yourself, you'd best find someone to be your front man. I'm an old man; I can handle the formalities and the social side for you, but when it comes to actual sales, young people like you had better do it." Guan Xuemin smiled wryly. "And I won't hide it from you — I'm an old pedant. In matters of business I may well be less use than you are."
"I see..." Only after hearing Guan Xuemin's advice did Wei Zhao begin to think of this. Before, he had simply meant to borrow Guan Xuemin's name and supply the formula himself, and with that start a pharmaceutical company. But now that Guan Xuemin had said his piece, he realized it was not so simple as he had imagined. He had the name; he had the efficacy; but one still had to know how to run a business.
"Just so. My younger son would be a suitable candidate — Xinxin's father, that is — but I don't want him involved in this." Guan Xuemin suggested, "If you won't manage it yourself, then you must find someone you trust to keep an eye on it for you. As for marketing, you can hire a professional manager."
"Grandpa Guan, isn't Guan Xin a shareholder in the company? She could keep an eye on a few things for me." It suddenly struck Wei Zhao that Guan Xin was also a shareholder, and so he set his mind on her.
"Heh, even if Xinxin is a shareholder, she represents me. You still need a representative of your own." Guan Xuemin smiled. "By the way, if you have the time, come over. Make a trial batch of the medicines you mean to bring to market first, so I can send them for testing and apply for the approval documents."
"No problem. Let's say this weekend." Wei Zhao thought it over: going with Kang Xiaobo to his second grandfather's birthday banquet shouldn't take long, and afterward he could drop by Guan Xuemin's place.
He still had some of the wound medicine on hand; the last batch he had made was not yet used up. As for the analgesic Yang Huaijun had used, Guan Xuemin already had the formula for it, and he would probably put together a trial batch first in these few days.
For the early stage, they would launch only these two medicines. Any more, and the wonder of each would be diluted instead. Only after these two had scored a resounding first success should the other new products be rolled out one after another; that was the way to draw still more attention.
Guan Xin took the account number her grandfather handed her and glanced at the account holder's name: Tang Yun. A faint sense of loss rose in her heart, and a touch of jealousy as well, but she still did as Wei Zhao had said and transferred the two hundred thousand.
Mother Tang's bank card had been opened under Tang Yun's name — originally for Tang Yun to keep her New Year's money and pocket money in. After Tang Jucheng was injured, Tang Yun contributed all the New Year's money she had saved over the years, and Mother Tang could not be bothered to open a new account, so she simply used Tang Yun's card as the family's savings card.
"Beep beep..." The chime of a text message sounded. This card had been linked, at the start, to Tang Jucheng's phone.
Tang Jucheng took out his phone and glanced at the message, and was rather startled: "Two hundred thousand came in?"
"Two hundred thousand?" Mother Tang was stunned for a moment, then overjoyed. She snatched the phone from her husband's hand and stared at the figure, counting the zeros over and over until she had made certain it was two hundred thousand and not twenty thousand. Then she said happily, "Yun'er, I told you Xiaolin was a good sort. You only asked for a hundred and fifty thousand, and he sent you two hundred thousand — it seems he must have overheard what I said just now!"
"..." Tang Yun looked at her mother's joy and did not know whether to be happy along with her or simply resigned. Two hundred thousand... now she could never repay it.
"Old Tang, we have your surgery money. Tomorrow we go to the hospital!" No one was happier than Mother Tang. The fee for her husband's operation, which had lain on her heart all this time, was finally settled. With the surgery, he might stand again, and she would no longer have to carry this household alone.
"Sis, is my brother-in-law really a rich second-generation kid?" Xiaowei was astonished too; it even felt like a dream. Before, he had only been musing aloud — he had not really believed that his sister could borrow a hundred and fifty thousand just by opening her mouth. Yet it turned out his sister's face was worth even more: she had asked for a hundred and fifty thousand, and the man had sent two hundred thousand.
"What rich second-generation kid!" Tang Yun glared at him. "And he's not your brother-in-law! This money has to be paid back!"
"Hey, Sis, you're blushing!" Xiaowei grinned and nodded. "Of course we'll pay it back! Xiaodan and I will scrimp and save, and we'll pay it back."
"Little brat, what do you know!" Tang Yun snorted crossly. But then it occurred to her that Xiaowei really was no little brat — he was only half a year younger than she was, and he and Xiaodan had long since made their relationship official. In that light, he was more experienced than she was.
"Sis, thank my brother-in-law for me! Next time he comes, you must call me and Xiaodan — we want to thank him in person!" Xiaowei said with a chuckle.
"Yes, Sister Tang Yun, thank him so much..." Xiaodan felt as if she were dreaming too. An hour ago Xiaowei had been frantic to sell his kidney; in the blink of an eye the money had been raised.
Watching her mother and brother so happy, Tang Yun felt a tightness in her chest. Was what she was doing right, or wrong? Was this what they meant by sacrificing one to make the whole family happy?
Tang Yun clutched her phone and went out of the room, back into the yard, hesitating again and again — yet Wei Zhao's call, perversely, would not come. Tang Yun was rather annoyed. Did this man care so little for money? He had transferred two hundred thousand and had not even called to make sure it had arrived! What if the transfer had gone astray?
Tang Yun had no choice but to dial Wei Zhao's number once more.
"Hello? Wei Zhao?" Hearing no word from him, Tang Yun ventured a question.
"Mm..." Wei Zhao answered.
"What are you doing? Why aren't you saying anything?" Tang Yun was puzzled.
"Drinking water. All right." Wei Zhao set down the cup in his hand; he had been drinking water when Tang Yun's call came in.
"Oh..." Tang Yun was truly speechless. He did not ask whether the money had arrived, but went off to drink his water at leisure. She really could not tell whether he had far too much money — and yet he did not seem to. He drove a beat-up van; he did not look like a man with much money either.
