Chapter 501 — Some Left Over

The Blossom Guardian

Xiao Wangba had once been on fairly good terms with Wu Chengtian — the sort of fair-weather friends who drank together and chased women together — but at least they knew each other's faces, and with Xiao Wangba fawning on him so deliberately now, Wu Chengtian did not rebuff him. He glanced at Xiao Wangba and said, "Don't even mention it. I ran into some little nobody who's trying to steal my woman, and Grandfather wouldn't stick up for me. He just dragged me out of there. Who knows what's so untouchable about the brat — just because he's with Doctor Guan!"

"Exactly. What's Doctor Guan worth? Divine Doctor Kang is the real thing!" The speaker was Xiao Wangba's younger brother, Xiao Ben's son, Xiao Wangdao. The Xiao family was about to be joined in marriage with the Kang family, so naturally he spoke up for Divine Doctor Kang.

"Right!" Wu Chengtian felt at once that these two Xiao brothers were to his taste. "What are you two up to? If you've nothing on, come along with me — drinks are on me!"

Wu Chengtian was in a foul mood and wanted someone to pour his heart out to. The Xiao brothers exchanged a glance and were secretly delighted. They had been looking for a way to cozy up to Wu Chengtian all along, and now that he was inviting them to a meal of his own accord, how could they not be overjoyed?

"Sure! But let us treat you, Brother Chengtian. You're the elder brother and we're the younger ones — how could we let our elder brother pay?" said Xiao Wangba.

"If you put it that way, then I definitely can't let you pay. Since I'm the elder brother, it's only right that the elder brother treats." Hearing the Xiao brothers' flattery, Wu Chengtian's earlier displeasure eased a little.

"All right then, but we'll have to wait a bit. Brother Zhaolong from Divine Doctor Kang's family and his fiancée — my cousin — will be here any minute. Let's go together!" Xiao Wangba said with a nod.

"Oh? Kang Zhaolong?" Wu Chengtian was slightly taken aback. "I know him. We've met. Then let's go together!"

After a wait, a Nissan Civilian van pulled up slowly. It was the Xiao family's car. Though the Xiao family had fallen on hard times, they had not sold the car. A vehicle like that cost a fortune to buy but would fetch far less if sold, so they might as well keep it to put up a front.

Originally, the Xiao family and Divine Doctor Kang had intended for Kang Zhaolong and Wang Xinyan to attend the auction as well, but Wang Xinyan refused no matter what was said. There was no help for it, so Kang Zhaolong stayed home to keep her company.

All afternoon, Wang Xinyan sat silently on the sofa listening to her MP3 player, quietly scrolling through a novel on her phone. Whatever Kang Zhaolong said, her answer was either "Oh" or "Mm" — which left him with no temper left to lose at all.

At long last evening came and the auction ended. Xiao Wangba and Xiao Wangdao invited Kang Zhaolong out to dinner. Under her parents' urging, Wang Xinyan had no choice but to go along with Kang Zhaolong and make an appearance.

Her father had promised her as well: one meal, a chance to get to know each other, no rush to decide — after dinner she could go back to Songshan. And so, reluctant as she was, Wang Xinyan came with Kang Zhaolong to the auction house.

"Brother Chengtian, do you have a car?" Xiao Wangba asked Wu Chengtian when he saw his family's car arrive.

Wu Chengtian had come with Wu Gonggao, but Wu Gonggao had evidently gone off to see friends, and Wu Chengtian, furious that his grandfather had not stood up for him, was sulking here alone and had not left with his grandfather either. So where would he have a car now?

"Let's go. We'll take your family's car." Wu Chengtian did not feel that lacking a car cost him face. After all, at the Wu family's level, no one would believe it if you said they had no car.

"Good, wonderful. Brother Chengtian, please get in!" Xiao Wangba ushered Wu Chengtian into the car, and only then did he and Xiao Wangdao climb in themselves.

"Brother Kang, this is Brother Chengtian of the Iron Hand Wu family!" Once in the car, Xiao Wangdao made the introductions to Kang Zhaolong.

"Oh? Brother Chengtian, hello. We've met before!" Kang Zhaolong said with a smile, extending a hand to Wu Chengtian. "This is my fiancée, Wang Xinyan. Xinyan, this is Brother Chengtian, the outstanding one of the Iron Hand Wu family's younger generation — our idol!"

"Ha, you flatter me!" Kang Zhaolong had put Wu Chengtian in a very good mood. "Zhaolong, you're the one who knows how to talk. You'll have to drink a couple extra cups with me later!"

"No problem!" Kang Zhaolong agreed readily. He was a good student, but no bookworm — on the contrary, he was a thoroughly devious sort, and he knew well enough to curry favor with Wu Chengtian now.

Wang Xinyan, meanwhile, sat quietly, not saying a word, listening to her MP3 player, as though everything around her had nothing to do with her.

Seeing that Wang Xinyan would not speak, Kang Zhaolong was quite helpless, but fortunately Wu Chengtian did not mind at all. He sat there and struck up a conversation with Xiao Wangba...

Wei Zhao delivered the twenty bottles of "deluxe" wound medicine he had prepared to Fatty Lai's room. Fatty Lai had not expected Wei Zhao to finish so quickly. Astonished, he also felt boundless admiration for himself and his brilliant decision to follow Wei Zhao. "Boss... how should we price this deluxe version of the wound medicine?"

"Do as you see fit." Wei Zhao would not interfere with the pricing of such auction goods, for everyone attending the auction was a wealthy merchant or tycoon; making them bleed a little was no great matter.

"All right!" With Wei Zhao's full delegation of authority, Fatty Lai could operate freely. After a moment's hesitation, he said, "Um... Boss, this deluxe wound medicine — can I take part in the auction?"

"You need this?" Wei Zhao gave Fatty Lai a strange look. Men hardly had any use for such a thing, did they? Wei Zhao himself bore a few scars from fights, but he had never thought of getting rid of them — there was no need.

"Heh heh, it's my old woman. A few years back she had her appendix out and it left a scar..." Fatty Lai grew a little embarrassed here. "You know how it is — every time we get intimate, that scar bothers me, and my wife's a vain one too. In summer she can't wear a crop top..."

"All right, I get it..." Wei Zhao waved a hand, seeing that Fatty Lai was rambling on without end. "I've still got some left over in my room. I was going to throw it out, but if you need it, take it."

"Huh? Throw it out?" Fatty Lai nearly fainted. "Boss, this is money we're talking about! What a waste to throw it away — it's like throwing money in the trash!"

"I mixed up a bit extra and ran out of bottles. It's in the way on my bed, and I still need to sleep at night." Wei Zhao shrugged indifferently. It was a low-cost item; he truly did not much care.

"I've got room. I won't sleep!" Fatty Lai thought himself lucky — if he had spoken a moment later, nothing would have been left!
