Chapter 3 — Are You Rich? The Girl No Longer Kicked Wei Zhao's Leg, But Leaned Against the Window Quietly Listening to Her MP3

The Blossom Guardian · Page 2 of 2

Wang Xinyan watched Wei Zhao's retreating figure and shook her head. He really was a most peculiar man. If her mother had not been waiting for her at the exit, Wang Xinyan would not have minded spending a little more time with Wei Zhao.

It was not that Wang Xinyan felt anything special for Wei Zhao. She simply found him truly unlike anyone else. He carried so much cash in a backpack instead of putting it in a bank, dressed as countrified as a man could be, and yet there was an indescribable air about him.

"Mister, need a room? Very cheap..."

The moment Wei Zhao stepped out of the railway station, he was mobbed by touts drumming up business for the nearby inns. A migrant-worker getup like his was exactly the clientele those little places watched for.

No rich man would stay in such a small inn, and the grand hotels had no need to come out touting.

Wei Zhao waved them off, squeezed through the ring of touts, and headed for the taxi stand on the square. In his hand he held a slip of paper, the address the old man had given him just before he left home.

He climbed into a taxi, and the driver asked warmly, "Young man, where are you off to?"

"To this address." Wei Zhao handed the slip to the driver.

This driver haunted the station quarter and could read a passenger at a glance. One look told him Wei Zhao was from out of town, most likely here to find work, so he planned to fleece him a little, since the boy would not know the roads. He cheerfully took the slip Wei Zhao handed him, glanced at the address, and his face turned green on the spot!

The note read: No. 36 Guangming Avenue, Songshan City, Pengzhan Building. 11.2 kilometers from the railway station, via the New Second Ring Bridge.

The route was all mapped out, the mileage marked down to the decimal. Who was there left to fleece? But what was this lad going to Pengzhan Building for? That was the biggest corporate group in Songshan City. Would a fellow dressed like a laborer know anyone inside?

The driver sighed, tossed the slip aside, and drove off honestly.

Traffic in Songshan moved well, and there were many bridges. Wei Zhao felt one rise and dip and they had arrived. He paid the twenty-four yuan fare and got out.

Staring up at so tall a tower before him, Wei Zhao felt dizzy. It looked even taller than the mountains back home? His employer seemed to be rolling in money. Just as the old man had said, one job might feed him for a lifetime. He only wondered if a jump from the top would kill a man.

Back home, though, the old man had once kicked him flying from a mountaintop clean into a ravine and he had not died of it, only lain in bed black and blue for several days.

Wei Zhao checked the street number and the building's name, and only after making sure they matched did he swagger grandly inside.
