So in this situation, all Wei Zhao was thinking about was how to keep Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu safe and sound, not how to catch the robbers. That was work for the police, and he had no wish to get involved.
Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu had clearly never run into anything like this before, and both were stunned now, at a loss for what to do.
"All of you, listen up! Hands on your heads, squat down where you are and do not move! I promise I will not hurt you, but if anyone dares to move, do not blame me for what happens!" The bald man fired another shot into the air, and the noisy bank fell silent in an instant.
Children forgot to cry and adults forgot to scream, all of them obediently and of their own accord holding their heads and crouching on the ground. Faced with armed thugs, they had little choice. If they wanted to live, they had to obey.
It was not that these people lacked a sense of justice, but at a moment like this, whoever stepped forward would pay with his life.
While the bald man held up his gun and lectured them, his accomplices had already rushed to the counters, smashed the glass with hammers, and forced the clerks at gunpoint to stuff cash into the bags they had brought.
"Faster! What the hell are you dawdling for!" One robber barked impatiently at a middle-aged clerk, "Keep stalling and I will put a bullet in you!"
"Y-yes..." The man was timid, and frightened by the robber his hands began to shake, and with a slap a stack of bills slipped to the floor and scattered.
"Damn you! Are you stalling on purpose?" The robber glared and pulled the trigger with a bang, hitting the man in the arm. The man screamed and clutched his arm.
The robbers' earlier shots had all been fired into the air. Though frightening enough, they could not compare to this one. This shot had been aimed at a living person, so everyone in the bank, clerks and customers alike, covered their mouths in shock and grew even more terrified of the thugs, daring not to make a move.
The bald man was well pleased with this kill-one-to-warn-a-hundred effect from his subordinate, and swept his triumphant gaze across the bank.
"Sister Yaoyao, I am scared..." Shen Yushu usually acted bold and carefree, but at the critical moment she clung tight to Gu Mengyao's arm, her small face gone pale.
"It is all right, it is all right, Xiaoshu, I will protect you." Gu Mengyao was frightened herself, but Shen Yushu was a year younger, so she had to play the big sister and comfort her.
"Neither of you needs to comfort the other. I will keep you safe." Wei Zhao said calmly.
Although Wei Zhao was not confident he could capture all the robbers alive, keeping Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu from harm was still well within his power.
Gu Mengyao moved her lips, about to mock Wei Zhao out of habit, but when she saw the resolve in his eyes, in the end she said nothing.
Just as the gang was about to finish packing the cash and leave the bank, the wail of police sirens came from outside.
Most of the customers frowned when they heard the sirens. After all, the arrival of the police was sometimes a good thing, but in a situation like this, with the robbers unable to escape, it was bound to drive them to something desperate.
It would be even worse if they seized hostages. So most people felt a gloom settle over them. To them, how much money the bank lost had nothing to do with them. Getting out of here alive was all that mattered.
"Robbers inside the bank, listen! You are surrounded! Lay down your weapons at once! Surrender and seek leniency, that is your only way out, otherwise there is only death!" A voice blared from a loudspeaker outside the bank.
"Hmph!" The bald man snorted with contempt at the shouting outside and said to one of his men, "Tell them out there, if they dare to make a move, I will start killing!"
The man took the hint at once, went to the bank entrance and shouted out, "What are you yelling for? Yell again and our boss will start killing!"
