In truth, Guan Xin was not short of money; on the contrary, her family was very rich. But she did not want that. She wanted to earn her own money through her own efforts. After graduating from nursing school, Guan Xin had stayed on in Songshan City and become a nurse at the First People's Hospital.
In this age of fierce competition for jobs, nursing was not an easy profession either. Many pretty girls had to bow their heads to the unspoken rules before they got the job they wanted.
But Guan Xin's family background was there for all to see. Play the unspoken rules with the daughter of a hospital shareholder? Was that not asking for death? Who would dare? At the personal appointment of the hospital director, Guan Xin went to the surgical treatment room.
The director had also taken into account that Director Sun Weimin of the surgical department was a man of upright character, and that was why he had let Guan Xin stay there. Otherwise, if some scandal broke about a doctor harassing the daughter of a hospital shareholder, the director might as well resign.
After work, Guan Xin ran happily to the bank, meaning to withdraw her salary and savor the joy of money she had earned herself.
Because of the peculiar hours of a nurse's job, almost all the banks were closed by the time she got off work. Guan Xin had no choice but to walk a long way to the only bank nearby open twenty-four hours — and wouldn't you know it, she walked right into a bank robbery.
When the robbers burst into the bank and fired their guns, ordering everyone not to move, Guan Xin's mind went blank. She did whatever the others did, crouching down on the floor with the flow of people.
She had thought that if she could just get through this stretch, once the robbers took the money and left, all would be well. But the police surrounded the bank, and the robbers had to take a hostage as a bargaining chip.
When the robber walked toward her side, Guan Xin was terrified that he would choose her. To her surprise, the robber picked a girl not far from her, one who looked about her own age.
What Guan Xin found unbelievable was that at that moment the young man in front of her suddenly stood up and volunteered to be the robbers' hostage.
Everyone knew that at a time like this most people could not hide fast enough — who would volunteer to be a robber's hostage? Guan Xin deeply admired the courage of the young man in front of her.
But the thug raised his gun and fired at him without the slightest mercy. Guan Xin's heart nearly leaped out of her chest.
What she could not understand, though, was that the young man had turned his body slightly to one side, then straightened up again. In a situation like that, what was the point of such a movement?
Guan Xin had no time to think it over; the gunshot rang out, and the young man took the bullet. Yet he did not make a sound, silently enduring the bullet that struck his leg.
In that moment Guan Xin felt a strong urge to stand up. She wanted to tell the young man that she was a nurse and could bandage him. But her legs would not obey her, and it was only after the young man and the girl were taken away together as hostages that she came back to her senses...
