When Wei Zhao had come this way before, he had noticed a family inn by the roadside, though it had not looked very good, so he had passed it by, meaning to look around to see if there was any other inn with better surroundings.
But now the situation was urgent, and Wei Zhao could not afford to hunt for another inn. To have one at all was good enough.
"One room." Wei Zhao rushed into the inn with the girl on his back and said to the proprietress sitting behind the counter.
The proprietress had been idly watching television when suddenly a strapping young fellow burst in carrying a woman in black on his back and demanded a room the moment he came through the door, and a knowing smile spread across her face.
Her little family inn was in fact of a very low grade, opened for the express purpose of giving young lovers without money a place for tenderness, and most of these people did not care whether the place was grand or not, so long as it was quiet and clean.
The proprietress had seen no few young men and women come here for a room, but one as impatient as Wei Zhao, carrying a woman in on his back and demanding a room the instant he entered, was rare.
"An hourly room is fifteen yuan an hour, a full day stay is sixty yuan." the proprietress said to Wei Zhao.
"Oh, then I'll put down a hundred yuan deposit first." Wei Zhao took a hundred yuan from his pocket and handed it to the proprietress.
"Hold on, show your ID for registration." the proprietress said, not blinded by the sight of money and not letting down her guard.
Wei Zhao frowned, not knowing whether the girl on him could hold out, but there was no help for it, registering for a stay was only reasonable, so he could only take out his own ID and hand it to the proprietress for registration.
"You won't need hers, will you?" Wei Zhao asked. By she he naturally meant the girl on his back, and he trusted the proprietress would take his meaning.
"No need, registering one person is enough." The proprietress registered IDs as the relevant regulations required, not to make things hard for Wei Zhao on purpose, but one person registered for one room was enough. After scanning Wei Zhao's ID, the proprietress produced a room card. "Upstairs, Room 209. Go up yourself."
"Thank you." Wei Zhao took the room card and hurried upstairs with the girl on his back. All the way, the girl lay motionless against his shoulder, and if not for the heartbeat he could feel through the softness of her chest, Wei Zhao would almost have suspected she was already dead.
"Huff." Wei Zhao tossed the girl onto the bed, then carefully shut the door, drew the curtains, and checked every corner of the room closely, and only when he was sure there were no wireless cameras or such things did he feel at ease.
To tell the truth, had he not suddenly caught sight of the ring on the little finger of the girl's right hand, Wei Zhao would never have meddled in such idle business and brought trouble upon himself for nothing.
The pattern on the girl's ring stood for an organization, a very famous international assassin organization. Although Wei Zhao did not belong to this organization, its founder had no small connection with Wei Zhao.
The master who taught Wei Zhao the arts of assassination was precisely one of the founders of that organization. Old Man Wei was indeed formidable, but what he mastered was solid, steady, down-to-earth skill, suited for facing the enemy head-on.
But in the actual execution of missions, chances to face the enemy head-on were few and far between, and assassination and ambush were the keys to victory. When Wei Zhao was six years old, he had been sent by Old Man Wei to his master for two years of intensive training, and his master had taught him everything about assassination and ambush as a killer.
