Chapter 142 — Another Wasted Trip

"Right? So is there something you need?" Shen Yushu did not much care whether Wei Zhao showed up or not, nor was she so kind-hearted that she simply had to help a classmate. The crux of the matter was that she, too, was curious — what did Tang Yun want with Wei Zhao, what business did she have?
"I... it's nothing... Then I'll wait until he's back, and come again." Tang Yun hesitated. The matter of the formula was not something she could easily ask another person to relay; better to say it herself.
"Oh." Shen Yushu was a little disappointed, but she could hardly press Tang Yun. "Then come by again this afternoon and see..."
"Mm, thank you..." Tang Yun, also somewhat disappointed, turned and went back to her classroom. She had come twice now, and Wei Zhao was not only absent — he hadn't even come to school! What on earth was the matter with him? She had clearly gotten off the bus together with him!
When Shen Yushu returned to the classroom, she found that Gu Mengyao had already set down her book and was staring at her with sharp eyes. Shen Yushu felt a flicker of fear. "Sister Yaoyao, why are you looking at me like that?"
"Xiaoshu, where did you go?" Gu Mengyao had looked up a moment ago and found Shen Yushu gone; following her classmates' gazes and searching carefully, she had discovered that the girl had actually run off to the classroom door to talk with Tang Yun. She was furious — hadn't she told her not to go striking up conversations? Why wouldn't she listen? If Wei Zhao got wind of it, he'd think she cared about him so very much...
But, thoughts aside, Gu Mengyao still wanted very badly to know what Shen Yushu had managed to find out! If she asked her nicely and reasonably, that slippery little thing might not give her a proper answer; so Gu Mengyao put on a show of being angry — and sure enough, Shen Yushu confessed everything.
"I just asked her what she wanted with Brother Arrow..." Shen Yushu pouted. "But she wouldn't tell me either. All I could do was tell her Brother Arrow wasn't in, and that she should come back this afternoon."
"Oh..." Gu Mengyao nodded. "Who knows what that Wei Zhao is up to. He left a note this morning and just went off — what kind of attitude is that? My daddy's paying him for nothing. This is him skipping work!"
"Sister Yaoyao, I remember you used to think the farther away he stayed, the better. How did you change your mind so fast?" Shen Yushu asked, teasing.
"Well, well... it isn't easy for Daddy to earn money, and I ought to be worthy of the salary he pays, hadn't I?" Gu Mengyao hemmed and hawed, fishing up a shabby excuse that she herself hardly believed. Yet to admit that she no longer disliked Wei Zhao so much — that, she could not bring herself to say.
"So that's it. Then I'll tell Brother Arrow to be a little more devoted to his work." Shen Yushu nodded, looking wholly convinced.
"..." Gu Mengyao was speechless. Even that could be believed? She looked at Shen Yushu, who was quietly preparing for the next class, and it seemed to her that a faint sadness had flickered across the girl's brow...
