Chapter 71 — He Still Got the Better Deal (Please Recommend, Please Bookmark, Please Give All Kinds of Support)
......
After dinner, Wei Zhao went to clear the table. The Lock&Lock boxes the dishes came in used to be taken away directly by Uncle Qing early the next morning and sent to the hotel to be washed by special staff, but since Wei Zhao had come he had felt it was not nice to leave them all greasy, so he tidied them up in passing.
"Brother Arrow, you really are a good homemaker. Whoever marries you in the future will be blessed! I'm going upstairs!" With that word of encouragement for Wei Zhao, Shen Yushu went upstairs.
Marry me? A chill ran through Wei Zhao, and his first thought was that this girl had a taste for playing the husband. But he was long used to Shen Yushu's impish strangeness and said nothing.
After scrubbing the food boxes clean and putting them into a plastic bag, Wei Zhao switched off the dining room light and walked toward his own room.
The second five-year term was almost due, and that left Wei Zhao feeling restless. Since cultivating the first layer of the Xuanyuan Yulong Jue, his physique had undergone a tremendous change, the meridians inside his body had become far firmer than before, and his skill and agility were much keener than those of a normal man.
In the eyes of ordinary people, he was already an expert among experts, yet that only made Wei Zhao look forward all the more. If the first layer was already like this, then the second layer... the third layer, what mighty power would they hold?
And beyond the stone door in the great hall of the cave, besides the later manuals of the Xuanyuan Yulong Jue, could there be other things as well?
Wei Zhao touched the jade pendant on his chest. This one pendant alone had already brought him endless benefits. If there were other treasures behind the stone door... Just the thought of it excited him!
Many times, by virtue of that pendant alone, he had saved his own life and the lives of his comrades! Even now Wei Zhao had not fully mastered or understood the functions of the pendant.
Yet the power of the pendant was most mysterious, as if it could read his very thoughts. If anyone within a certain range meant him harm, the pendant would send him a signal to let him know in advance.
It was precisely because of the pendant's early warning that Wei Zhao and his comrades had been able to turn danger into safety time and again in the bullet-swept primeval forest! That was the pendant's early-warning function.
There was another function. If someone he had met before, someone who had once meant him harm, was present within a certain radius around him, even if he hid his killing intent and for the moment released no malice toward Wei Zhao, Wei Zhao could still gradually lock onto that man's existence by means of the pendant's signal. The closer he got to that man, the stronger the signal the pendant sent him!
Duels between experts often came down in the end to sneak attacks and assassinations. If one strike missed, they would retreat swiftly and never grapple for long. Those who had crossed hands with Wei Zhao once, even if they escaped under cover, were in the end inexplicably tracked down and finished off by Wei Zhao.
That was why his teammates called him "the Eagle". Once the eagle fixed its eyes on its prey, few could ever escape.
Of course, the pendant had many more extended functions. It could warn of bad things, and it could warn of good things too, only the signals it sent were slightly different. Wei Zhao did not know in what way the pendant influenced him to receive its warnings. At least no one around him seemed to be affected in any way.
But as far as Wei Zhao had figured out, there were these three meanings so far. In other situations the pendant would sometimes send other signals, only Wei Zhao did not know what they meant, nor what conditions triggered its response.
Shen Yushu went upstairs, pushed open the door to Gu Mengyao's room, and found Gu Mengyao sitting on the bed with her knees drawn up, munching potato chips, with an English workbook on her lap as she marked up today's exam paper.
"Too many snacks will stunt your growth." Shen Yushu glanced at Gu Mengyao with a grin, and thinking of what had just happened with Wei Zhao, her smile grew even brighter.
"What are you laughing at?" Gu Mengyao felt baffled and uncomfortable under Shen Yushu's laughter. She looked herself up and down and found nothing wrong. It was only a bag of chips, after all. Could that remark be mocking her for having a smaller chest?
"Sister Yaoyao, let me tell you something funny! I avenged you!" Shen Yushu sat slyly down on the edge of the bed and snatched the chips from Gu Mengyao's hand.
"Didn't you say snacks stunt your growth?" Gu Mengyao glared at her. "What revenge? So mysterious?"
"Hehe, I'm already fully developed. For my height I'm perfectly proportioned!" Shen Yushu did not care at all as she picked up a chip and popped it into her mouth. "Just now, after you left, I called Brother Arrow to eat! Then I had him sit where you were sitting before, and I told him I had served his rice for him, and he just ate it..."
"So what... Huh? You don't mean he ate the bowl of rice I left over?" Gu Mengyao's eyes went wide.
"And he used your chopsticks too!" Shen Yushu said triumphantly. "So, this time he tasted your saliva. I avenged you, right?"
"What nonsense!" Gu Mengyao shook her head at this. "Doesn't that mean he got the better deal?"
"Well..." Shen Yushu thought to herself, when you taste his saliva you suffer a loss, but when he tastes yours he gets a bargain? Yet on second thought, that really was how it was. If this had happened to any other boy in school, he would probably be secretly delighted!
"All right, let's not talk about him." Gu Mengyao felt a little annoyed and did not want to mention Wei Zhao. "Aren't you going to sort out the questions you got wrong on today's English paper?"
"Mm, I'll do it now." Shen Yushu stopped joking and at once got out her schoolbag, took out the paper, and sorted through it together with Gu Mengyao.
Although neither Gu Mengyao nor Shen Yushu lacked intelligence, intelligence without daily effort was wasted. Though their families were well off, both Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu still worked very hard, especially Gu Mengyao, who did not want people to say she had gotten into the key class of a key high school only by family background.
After sorting out the English paper, the two reviewed other subjects for a while. After all, they were already in their third year of high school and would soon take the college entrance exams. For Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu alike, getting straight into a first-rate university on family connections would not have been hard, but getting in on their own merits was different after all.
Seeing it was getting late, Gu Mengyao yawned, and Shen Yushu felt sleepy too. The two took a hot shower in the bedroom bathroom, lay in bed watching an episode of Pleasant Goat and Big Big Wolf on an MP4 player, and then fell asleep.
Wei Zhao spent yet another night cultivating the Xuanyuan Yulong Jue. A night of cultivation restored his strength fully, quite equal to several hours of deep sleep.
When Wei Zhao opened his eyes and exhaled a breath of stale air, it was already past five in the morning. He went to the bathroom and washed up. This morning he would not watch TV even if it killed him.
When he had free time he would buy a laptop and hide in his room, where he could watch whatever he wanted.
