Chapter 176 — Got Them Just Like That
No wonder Qiu Lingshan thought that. Beyond that point there was no road at all, only the cliff. If Wei Zhao kept walking like that, one more step would send him over. How was that any different from suicide?
He had just seen her fierce and puffed up with anger. Could this guy be afraid that if he failed to find anyone she would settle accounts with him, and mean to end it all right here?
Although Qiu Lingshan felt Wei Zhao should not be that kind of man. Look at him, afraid of neither heaven nor earth the other day. How could he be afraid of her? But with the facts before her eyes, she had to guard against it.
Wei Zhao did not answer. He walked to the very edge of the cliff, where one more stride would have dropped him, and then stopped short and stood there.
"Whew..." Qiu Lingshan breathed a sigh of relief and hurried to his side. "What are you doing? Trying to scare people?"
Wei Zhao did not answer. He only closed his eyes and stood there in silence.
"Hey..." Qiu Lingshan raised an eyebrow. "Are you angry? Come on, a grown man cannot be that petty, can he?"
"Right underneath." Wei Zhao opened his eyes and tapped the ground at the cliff's edge with his foot. Qiu Lingshan's head swam just watching him. Go easy, would you? Do not fall down and kill yourself!
"What do you mean, right underneath?" Qiu Lingshan froze, not quite understanding what Wei Zhao was talking about.
"The robbers. They are right down there." Wei Zhao said.
"Uh..." Qiu Lingshan's face darkened. "You do not mean to tell me the robbers are below the cliff? That they already fell to their deaths?"
"Not dead."
Wei Zhao shook his head. If they were dead, the jade pendant would not react at all.
"Not dead?" Qiu Lingshan was taken aback. At first she had thought Wei Zhao could not find anyone and was making up some excuse to fob her off, telling her the robbers had jumped off the cliff and died. She had not expected him to say they were not dead!
"Under my feet, not under the cliff." Wei Zhao stamped his foot again to explain. "There is a difference. Below this precipice, there should be a cave."
"A cave?" Qiu Lingshan was utterly bewildered. It sounded almost magical. There was a cave in this sheer cliff?
"I believe there is." Wei Zhao said. "You can have someone come and take a look."
Wei Zhao could easily have climbed down the cliff face bare-handed, but he did not do so. That was not his job. His task was already done. He had only helped Qiu Lingshan find the men, and he had no wish to expose too much about himself.
Free climbing was generally something only special forces could manage, and on a cliff that had never been surveyed, even a professionally trained man would not have it easy.
If Wei Zhao pulled it off lightly, Qiu Lingshan, herself from the special forces, would naturally grow suspicious of him.
"Are you sure?" Qiu Lingshan found it almost unbelievable. Everything today sounded like something out of the Arabian Nights. Wei Zhao had wandered casually through the mountains and then told her there was a cave in the cliff and the robbers were inside it!
No one would believe that, because it was simply too far-fetched.
"Fairly sure..." Wei Zhao nodded. At least the jade pendant had never been wrong before, and standing here he could strongly feel the message it was passing to him!
It seemed that anyone who had once meant him harm could be recorded by the pendant, no matter how strong or weak their malice had been.
"Then wait for me. I will go down and take a look." Qiu Lingshan glanced down the side of the cliff wall, then clapped her hands together, ready to climb down. At bottom, she still did not quite believe the robbers were down there.
"I advise you not to." Wei Zhao was not looking down on Qiu Lingshan, but for her to take on four or five robbers alone would be asking too much. "They have guns."
"Fine, then I will trust you this once!" Talked out of it by Wei Zhao, Qiu Lingshan gave up the idea of going down herself. Bickering with Wei Zhao was one thing, but she would not gamble with something this serious. What if the robbers really were down there?
"You should have trusted me from the start. If you did not trust me, why bring me here at all?" Wei Zhao understood Qiu Lingshan's doubts. When he had miraculously found the enemy's den the first time, Yang Huaijun and the others had found it just as incredible.
"I will contact the helicopter now and have them bring men over." Qiu Lingshan took out her phone, ready to give orders. It was not that helicopters had never searched before, but this was wooded mountain country, and the helicopter could not fly too low. It had only circled in the air, found nothing, and given up.
No one had thought at the time to fly a helicopter down into the cliff valley for a look. Since Wei Zhao put it forward with such conviction, Qiu Lingshan could only believe him, as if she were trusting Captain Yang himself.
"Can I leave now?" Wei Zhao asked, seeing Qiu Lingshan was about to call in the helicopter to seize the robbers. There was no use for him staying here.
"No!" Qiu Lingshan refused flatly. "Not until we catch them!"
"I still have to get back to class." Wei Zhao said.
"I will drive you back!" Qiu Lingshan would not take no for an answer.
"All right." Wei Zhao sat down on the ground and looked up at Qiu Lingshan from below. "How grand, how magnificent!"
At first Qiu Lingshan found his words baffling, thinking he was talking about the peaks and the scenery here. But following his gaze, she saw it finally land on herself, and in an instant she understood what he was talking about!
Her face flushed red, and she wished she could kick Wei Zhao straight off the cliff. "Where are your eyes looking?"
"A certain part of your body sticks out too far. It is blocking my view of the blue sky." Wei Zhao said innocently...
"Look again and I will dig your eyes out and stomp them like bubbles." Qiu Lingshan turned her body to one side, giving Wei Zhao no further chance to look.
"You are threatening me. I am going to call the police." Wei Zhao did not take it seriously at all and kept lying comfortably on the ground.
"I am the police myself. If you have a problem, tell me!" Qiu Lingshan glared at Wei Zhao.
"Then never mind." Wei Zhao said.
"..." Qiu Lingshan was so angry she could only glare.
Before long a helicopter flew over, and Qiu Lingshan's phone rang. She answered, told them her position, and ordered them to search below the cliff face.
Qiu Lingshan had not held out much hope, but very soon her men called back to report. The men had been caught, every one of them, except for Baldy and Ma Laoliu who were already dead.
At this moment Qiu Lingshan was truly at a loss for words. What was this? They had really caught them?
Wei Zhao had not been guessing blindly or making up a location to fool her? It was clear now that he had not... But how on earth had he found them and fixed their position?
She had followed right behind him the whole way as he wandered about, and he had spotted it while she had noticed nothing at all? Who could tell her what was going on here?
