Chapter 200 — Xiaofen's Illness
Paying no mind to Song Huiping's bewildered stare, Kang Xiaobo lunged forward in a single stride. Only when he saw Lan Fen lying intact on the bed did the knot in his chest finally loosen. Though the doctor had already told him she was in no serious danger, he had not seen it with his own eyes, and he could not quite put his mind at rest.
"Yunyun, you're here!" Liu Xinwen caught sight of Tang Yun and hurried to greet her, her gaze coming to rest on Wei Zhao beside Tang Yun with a glint of teasing curiosity.
"Mm, Wenwen, how is Xiaofen?" Made uneasy by that look, Tang Yun shifted sideways and put a little more distance between herself and Wei Zhao.
"Xiaofen is not in any great danger, but the doctor says she is far too weak and must stay in for observation, so they want a ten thousand deposit for hospitalization..." Liu Xinwen came closer and lowered her voice. "But you and I both know Xiaofen's family situation. Can we scrape something together for her?"
"Well... I had Wei Zhao put it up first..." The words were barely out before Tang Yun felt awkward. Liu Xinwen already misunderstood her relationship with Wei Zhao, and saying this now would only confirm it. Why else would anyone pay ten thousand for Xiaofen's hospital fees?
"Wei Zhao?" Sure enough, Liu Xinwen glanced at Wei Zhao in surprise. "Yunyun, you and he..."
"It's not what you think... I've already made things clear with him. I'll tell you when I have time. Can we deal with Xiaofen first?" Tang Yun explained to Liu Xinwen in a low voice.
"Oh..." Liu Xinwen plainly did not believe her. Judging by everything Tang Yun had done, the girl seemed to have fallen into early love. Had she learned nothing from Xiaofen's lesson, that she would rush to follow in her footsteps?
It seemed she would have to keep a close watch on Tang Yun from the sidelines, lest she climb aboard Wei Zhao's pirate ship.
Kang Xiaobo had rushed to Xiaofen's bedside without thinking much at all. He had only wanted to see her, but having rushed over, he no longer knew what to do next. He wanted to touch her forehead, yet did not dare.
"Classmate, you are?" Song Huiping had never seen Kang Xiaobo before, and she was puzzled by this sudden savior of her daughter whose enthusiasm was rather too obvious.
"Auntie, my name is Kang Xiaobo." Kang Xiaobo introduced himself a little sheepishly. "I'm... Tang Yun and Liu Xinwen's classmate."
"Oh... thank you so much for today! If not for you, Xiaofen might have..." At this, Song Huiping recalled the terror of the moment and tears fell. "This child has had a bitter fate..."
"Auntie, please don't get upset. Isn't Xiaofen all right now..." Seeing Song Huiping break into tears as she spoke, Kang Xiaobo was at a loss and hastened to comfort her. "Auntie, it's all over. Please don't grieve..."
"Ah... yes, it's all over." Song Huiping nodded and rose to her feet. "Young man, Tang Yun, Liu Xinwen, please watch Xiaofen for me. I have to go home and raise the money. The doctor just told me I must pay ten thousand for the hospital stay..."
"Auntie, there's no need. It's already been paid..." Kang Xiaobo said quickly, handing the payment slip to Song Huiping.
"Ah?" Song Huiping froze, taking the slip in surprise, and saw written on it a deposit of six thousand yuan and one thousand dollars.
Foolish as Song Huiping might be, even she faintly sensed something was off. Kang Xiaobo had not only saved her daughter but had bustled about and paid the deposit. If he claimed it was mere kindness, she could not believe it.
"Child, you..." Song Huiping held the slip with trembling hands, staring at the amount. "So much money. What is this..."
Made bashful by her gaze, Kang Xiaobo hastened to explain. "Auntie, I took the lead in putting it up first..."
"You took the lead?" Song Huiping was baffled. Where had this leader come from now?
"Auntie Song, the medical fees were advanced by my classmate Wei Zhao." Tang Yun had no choice but to speak up. "It's him!"
Pushed to the front, Wei Zhao had no choice but to greet Song Huiping. "Hello, Auntie."
Now Song Huiping was truly confused. At first she had thought Kang Xiaobo might have designs on her daughter, though she could not be sure. But now she heard the hospital fees had been advanced by Wei Zhao, so who was this Wei Zhao?
"Young man... you..." Song Huiping looked at Wei Zhao in confusion. He had said nothing until now, so she had naturally overlooked him. Now here was another person with no connection to her family paying her medical bills, and what could that be for?
"Ha... Auntie, I'm Tang Yun's good friend." A touch of mischief rising in him, Wei Zhao said it with deliberate ambiguity.
"Ah... oh..." Song Huiping genuinely misunderstood, mistaking the nature of Wei Zhao and Tang Yun's relationship. If Wei Zhao were only Tang Yun's ordinary friend, why would he advance money for Tang Yun's friend?
Tang Yun also caught the suggestiveness in his words and shot him a glare, annoyed. Give this man an inch and he took a mile. She had already laid her cards on the table, yet he pressed his advantage.
Under these circumstances, however, Tang Yun could not explain. The more she explained, the more tangled it would become, so she could only pretend she had heard nothing.
Just then a faint, feeble moan came from Xiaofen's bed, and every eye in the ward turned back to her. With no time left for Wei Zhao, Song Huiping spun around in haste. "Xiaofen, are you awake?"
"Mom? Where am I?" Xiaofen stared in confusion at the IV drip in her hand, glancing about the room.
"Xiaofen, you're awake? Don't you remember? You were going to jump!" Song Huiping rushed over and seized her daughter's hand.
"Jump? Why would I jump?" Xiaofen opened her mouth, utterly at a loss.
"You don't remember? Better not to remember..." Song Huiping said. "Xiaofen, you were sleepwalking again. You dreamed of that wretch, and you tried to jump from our third floor!"
"Ah!" Startled by her mother's words, Xiaofen was frightened herself. She had tried to jump, yet had no memory of it at all. "Then did I jump or not?"
"You certainly did jump! If this classmate had not caught you downstairs, Xiaofen, you would have..." Here Song Huiping's voice choked with sobs again.
Xiaofen seemed to know there was something wrong with her own body, and she did not question her mother's words. Silently she turned her head toward Kang Xiaobo, but as she looked at him her gaze suddenly fixed, as if she were about to sink into hallucination again...
Song Huiping sensed it and started in fright, wanting to stop it, but it was already too late. They heard Xiaofen murmur, "Zhaoming, is that you? Have you come to the hospital to see me?"
