Chapter 303 — The Little Divine Physician
"Good, good! I'll call him right now and have him come over." Guan Xuemin nodded. Wei Zhao was right — examining a patient was always more intuitive than reading a case file. Having Wei Zhao consult on Old Master Liu's condition would be far better than studying it alone.
"Oh? The patient is nearby?" Wei Zhao asked, somewhat surprised.
"Yes, he lives right in this residential compound. Only a few minutes' drive — very quick..." With that, Guan Xuemin picked up the telephone on his desk and dialed a number.
In the family housing compound of Songshan Medical and Pharmaceutical University, inside a luxurious villa every bit the equal of Guan Xuemin's residence, a young man in his twenties was speaking indignantly to a middle-aged woman.
"Auntie, the way Sun Jingyan has behaved is a complete slap in the face to our Wu family! We Wu are, after all, a martial arts clan, one of the four great *** families. What is the Sun family? Nothing but an upstart clan. My going to propose was already a great honor to them, yet the old man of the Sun family doesn't know how to appreciate it — he says he doesn't want to meddle in young people's affairs and tells me to go earn it myself!" The speaker was Wu Chengtian, the most promising young man of the Wu family's younger generation, known as the "Little Wu Iron Hand."
"The Sun family's business has expanded aggressively these past years, and they have considerable connections in political circles. An upstart clan they may be, but they've already earned enough standing to rival the other old established families!" Liu Tianyi shot his nephew a glare.
"But Sun Jingyan and I grew up together as childhood sweethearts — she's gone too far! She secretly found herself a boyfriend and made a public fool of me!" Wu Chengtian said resentfully. "If not for him, how would I have lost my wallet? How would I have been made a laughingstock?"
"All right, all right! Xiaotian, your auntie will help you!" Wu Huiru spoke up. "In any case, your uncle's father still needs to recuperate here for some time. Your auntie will set up a company for you, and we'll show that Sun girl just what the men of the Wu family are capable of!"
"Thank you, Auntie..." Wu Chengtian was overjoyed. He had been at a loss in this unfamiliar city, but now with his auntie's help, he was determined to build a career and show Sun Jingyan just how extraordinary he was!
"Ring..." The telephone in the living room rang.
"Who could be calling at this hour? Tianyi, didn't I say to unplug the phone line at night? What if it disturbs Father's rest?" Wu Huiru complained upon hearing the ring.
"Unplug it? What if there's an emergency?" Liu Tianyi glared at Wu Huiru.
"What emergency could there be? This landline was already in the villa before — it must be a wrong number looking for the previous owner!" Wu Huiru curled her lip. "Anyone who knows us would call our cell phones!"
"Yes, Uncle, Auntie has a point. Just ignore it." Wu Chengtian had been happily discussing things with his auntie, about to delve further into how to win Sun Jingyan's heart once the company was established, when this blasted ringing interrupted them.
Liu Tianyi frowned, ignored his wife and nephew, and picked up the phone. "Hello, this is Liu Tianyi."
"Tianyi? This is Guan Xuemin. Bring your father over now. I've invited a specialist to consult on your father's condition and see whether there's any possibility of a cure." Guan Xuemin's voice came through the line.
"Yes, yes! Elder Guan, I'll bring my father over to visit right away! Thank you!" Hearing Guan Xuemin's words, Liu Tianyi nodded and thanked him repeatedly. That Guan Xuemin took his father's matter so much to heart filled Liu Tianyi with gratitude.
One had to understand — though the Liu family was currently the most prominent among the several great clans, it was largely because Old Master Liu Zhenhu was still alive and many people gave face for his sake. Once the old master passed, the Liu family would surely drop a tier!
After hanging up, Liu Tianyi shot his wife a fierce glare. "You nearly ruined something important! Elder Guan has invited a specialist to consult on Father's condition. If we'd missed this call, could you bear the responsibility?"
"I'll go help Father downstairs right now!" Wu Huiru dared not say more. She lowered her head and went upstairs. Over this period, Liu Tianyi had grown more and more commanding, and Wu Huiru no longer dared to make a scene — she had instead become docile.
"Hmph! Be careful!" Liu Tianyi warned.
"Chengtian, come with Auntie to help your Grandpa Liu downstairs!" Wu Huiru threw Wu Chengtian a meaningful look. Old Master Liu was a man of great stature — if he took a liking to Wu Chengtian and put in a word for him with the Sun family, then surely the old man of the Sun family could not refuse to give face.
Wu Chengtian understood at once and followed his auntie upstairs.
Ten minutes later, Old Master Liu Zhenhu came downstairs supported by Wu Huiru and Wu Chengtian. Liu Tianyi had already parked the car at the villa entrance. Once they were in, he drove straight to Guan Xuemin's villa.
When Liu Zhenhu heard that a specialist had come to treat him, his original drowsiness vanished, and his heart swelled with hope. Even a man past seventy hoped to live a few more years.
It was not that Liu Zhenhu feared death, but rather that he could not let go of the Liu family's descendants.
Mother Liu opened the door for them and invited the Liu family inside. Guan Xuemin and Wei Zhao were waiting on the living room sofa, but when Wei Zhao saw Liu Zhenhu, Liu Tianyi, and the others, he visibly started — he had not expected the patient Guan Xuemin spoke of to be Liu Zhenhu!
The Liu family also saw Wei Zhao on the sofa and were likewise startled, but both Liu Zhenhu and Liu Tianyi's faces lit up with excitement! If Guan Xuemin had found this little divine physician, did that not mean there was hope for Father's illness?
Yet Wu Chengtian's expression was very ugly! He had not expected to run into Wei Zhao here, much less that Wei Zhao would be sitting together with Doctor Guan, who was treating Grandpa Liu!
He wanted to say something but held it back. After all, this was neither the Wu nor the Liu household, and it was not his place to speak. He could only glare at Wei Zhao with resentment.
"Little divine physician! I never expected to see you here — this is wonderful!" Liu Tianyi was somewhat agitated and stepped forward to grasp Wei Zhao's hand! Having heard Guan Xuemin praise Wei Zhao so highly before, Liu Tianyi had felt some regret — that day had been far too rushed, and he had not gotten Wei Zhao's contact information, a fact he had regretted endlessly.
Wei Zhao did not extend his hand to take Liu Tianyi's. Of this whole family, aside from the old man whose words were at least pleasant, Wei Zhao had not a single good impression of any of them.
