Chapter 363 — Keep the Good Thing for Yourself
"Wei Zhao, can you really cure my leg?" Xiaofen was both startled and delighted, and even Kang Xiaobo gazed at Wei Zhao with expectation written all over his face.
"I can, but don't be impatient." Wei Zhao smiled. "It's no problem at all."
At Wei Zhao's home there were several nerve-stimulating medicines, compounded by the old man back when he was trying to awaken his own body's latent potential; later, however, once he began practicing the Xuanyuan Dragon-Taming Art, he no longer needed such drugs to strengthen his constitution, and they were set aside.
Since Wei Zhao had no use for them himself, he had never seriously studied those drugs that unlock human potential; and even without going back home to fetch them, he could, when he had the time, look up the relevant material, or simply telephone Elder Wei and ask for the formula.
"Mm-hm!" Xiaofen nodded excitedly. She had dreamed of walking like a normal person, and now Wei Zhao had given her hope, so that in an instant her whole being seemed to glow with vitality.
The change in Xiaofen delighted Kang Xiaobo; the whole way there he chatted with her about amusing things from school, including Wei Zhao's heroic exploits — slapping Zou Ruoming across the face, kicking Zhong Yongliang, and so on.
"Yunyun is so lucky to have found you as her leader — you're a good person, and you treat her so well!" Xiaofen was happy for Tang Yun as well; Wei Zhao was better than Kang Zhaoming by goodness knew how many times over.
"Isn't Kang Xiaobo good to you too?" Wei Zhao teased upon hearing this.
"That's right — I'm the leader's underling, so of course I've inherited the leader's fine traditions!" Kang Xiaobo declared with the utmost conviction.
"Heh..." Xiaofen was tickled. "Inherited? You're not his son!"
Downstairs at the First People's Hospital, Wei Zhao picked up Tang Yun.
When Tang Yun got into the car and saw Xiaofen, she was so astonished she could hardly believe her eyes!
"Xiaofen... you... you're so beautiful..." Tang Yun rubbed her eyes. For so many years she had grown used to Xiaofen's sickly look; she had never expected that, dressed up, Xiaofen would still be so lovely.
"Yunyun, don't make fun of me — how could I be as pretty as you?" Though she said this, Xiaofen was delighted at heart. She could not compare with Tang Yun, who was beautiful even without makeup, but compared with others Xiaofen still had the advantage.
"'A woman adorns herself for the one who delights in her' — that saying is not a bit false. Did you dress up for Kang Xiaobo?" Tang Yun joked.
"You're one to talk... Yunyun, why aren't you wearing your school uniform today? That dress is lovely — I've never seen you wear it before?" Xiaofen turned the topic back to Tang Yun.
"This..." Tang Yun blushed. This dress was the one Wei Zhao had bought for her at the night market; afterward, angry with Wei Zhao, she had thrown it in the wardrobe and never worn it. Now that her relationship with Wei Zhao had improved, she had naturally dug it out and put it on.
"I gave it to her," Wei Zhao said with a smile.
"Oh..." Kang Xiaobo and Xiaofen nodded knowingly.
"As if! I clearly paid you fifty yuan for it!" Tang Yun shot Wei Zhao a glare. "Since you say it was a gift from you, when are you going to give me my money back?"
"Heh..." Wei Zhao knew Tang Yun was only joking; she would never really ask for the money.
"By the way, leader, where's the birthday gift you prepared?" Kang Xiaobo suddenly remembered this important matter.
"Right here." Wei Zhao fished a small, exquisite box of antique charm from his pocket and handed it to Kang Xiaobo.
"Oh? What's this? It looks rather classy!" Kang Xiaobo took the box and opened it casually, then exclaimed in surprise: "Hey? Leader, what are these black pills?"
"Life-Extending Detox Pills." Wei Zhao offered a name he had just made up on the spot.
"Life-Extending Detox Pills?" Kang Xiaobo repeated the name, somewhat startled. "How come I've never heard of such a thing?"
"A miracle doctor gave them to me. There aren't many," Wei Zhao said. "Once you take one of these pills, the impurities and toxins accumulated in the body are rapidly expelled, achieving the effect of prolonging life. Take one, and you can extend your lifespan by five to ten years!"
"My god! Something that good? That can't be, leader — with something this fine, why give it to him?" Kang Xiaobo's words left Tang Yun and Xiaofen in the car speechless.
"Isn't he your second grandfather?" Wei Zhao was speechless too.
"That's true enough, but he hasn't treated my family well all these years. With something this good, I'd rather keep it for myself... rather give it to Xiaofen!" Kang Xiaobo had meant to say he would eat it himself, but thinking of Xiaofen beside him, he said this instead.
Xiaofen was somewhat moved, but she still said: "We're young; we don't need to take this, do we?"
"Xiaofen is right!" Wei Zhao nodded. "You're young — even if you detoxify, there isn't much to expel. It's especially effective for the elderly."
"So that's how it is!" Kang Xiaobo saw the light at once. "But even so, giving a good thing like this to him would be a waste — better to keep it for yourself!"
"When the time comes for you to take it, I'll have more; I've saved some for you." Wei Zhao smiled. "This one, though, is still for your second grandfather."
"All right..." Kang Xiaobo looked at the pill with a pang of regret. "Leader, you're not lying to me, are you? Is this thing really that miraculous?"
"It isn't miraculous — there's a scientific basis for it. The more toxins accumulate in the body, the greater the harm to the body, especially for older people; if a person doesn't take care in youth, the toxins in the body pile up more and more." Wei Zhao explained: "What this thing does is expel the toxins from the body. As for any other effect — there really isn't one."
"I see!" Kang Xiaobo nodded in understanding. "All right, then — for the sake of his being my second grandfather, he can have it."
Wei Zhao drove toward Donghai City, the provincial capital. Donghai was the seat of the province, not far from Songshan City but not exactly near either — about three hours' drive.
Wei Zhao's beat-up van could not go very fast. Where other cars took a little over three hours, Wei Zhao had to drive more than four. There was no helping it: the van simply would not pick up speed, and when it did, it was liable to rattle itself apart.
By the time the four of them reached Donghai City, the provincial capital, it was already past six in the evening.
"Where do we go now?" Once off the expressway, Wei Zhao was utterly lost — he knew nothing at all about the provincial capital, Donghai.
"Wait, let me call and ask!" Kang Xiaobo signaled Wei Zhao to pull the car over to the roadside, then dialed his parents' number.
