Chapter 5030 — Go Pursue Someone Else
Wei Zhao went straight to her door and knocked, asking as he did, "Is something wrong?"
"N... nothing." The tall woman's voice was noticeably flustered, yet she did not come to open the door, and it was anyone's guess what she was dawdling over.
Wei Zhao could not help but stare. He had only used an electric arc to break her light, nothing more; at worst her room was a little dark. As an expert of the early Foundation Establishment stage, did this little ice queen really need to panic so?
Without thinking, he released his spiritual sense to probe the situation, but the moment he made out what was inside he snatched it back. Wei Zhao's expression turned thoroughly awkward. So the little ice queen had not bought all those herbs merely to brew medicine—she had prepared a medicinal bath, and at this very moment was soaking in the tub, bare as the day she was born.
It was only a fleeting glimpse through his spiritual sense, yet it was clearer than what the naked eye could see, and Wei Zhao nearly had a nosebleed on the spot. On ordinary days the little ice queen was cold as frost and kept the whole world at arm's length, but stripped of her clothes she carried herself in an altogether different manner—that stark contrast set a man's heart itching, and no man alive could have helped himself.
Wei Zhao would not call himself a lecher; he did not normally spy on people with his spiritual sense, and no such embarrassment had ever befallen him before. This truly was an accident. Fortunately the little ice queen was only at the early Foundation Establishment stage—her spiritual sense was not even at the starting line—so she had not sensed his probe in the least. Otherwise she would surely have stormed out to kill him.
After an awkward wait, the door finally cracked open. Though the tall woman was fully dressed and wrapped up tight from head to toe, she still carried the damp warmth of a fresh bath, and one could not help letting one's thoughts wander.
"What?" Seeing Wei Zhao's expression as though his mind were drifting among the clouds, the tall woman frowned.
"Oh, I heard a noise from your room—did your bulb blow?" Wei Zhao asked.
"Seems so." The tall woman nodded, but showed not the slightest intention of letting Wei Zhao in to help, and made to shut the door.
"That's funny, my bulb broke a couple of days ago too, and I bought a few extra when I replaced it. How about I put one in for you? It won't do to fumble around in the dark all night. What do you say?" Wei Zhao said hastily.
"This..." The tall woman hesitated. She clearly did not much want Wei Zhao in her room, but going without light really was a nuisance. She was only halfway through her medicinal bath, and she could hardly tend her wounds in pitch darkness. At last she had no choice but to nod. "All right, then."
"Don't worry, it'll be quick." Wei Zhao had at last made it inside. He knew the room's layout well enough—these past days he had swept it several times a day with his spiritual sense, angling for a chance encounter—but this was the first time he had actually walked in.
Like the suite he rented, this was two bedrooms and a living room. Beyond a few basic pieces of furniture there was nothing at all, so bare that it could be taken in at a glance. There was none of the cozy, lovely warmth of a girl's room, but given the little ice queen's frigid temperament, Wei Zhao would have found it stranger still if it had looked like any ordinary girl's.
By the moonlight slanting through the window, the room could still be made out well enough. Wei Zhao made a show of hunting for the switch and giving it a try or two before saying, "All the bulbs in your place are dead? Same thing happened to me last time. It's probably the wiring—it was redone not long ago, so the voltage isn't quite steady. That's the trouble with new developments, but it's nothing serious. Changing the bulb will fix it."
"Voltage?" The tall woman was taken aback.
"Yes. You don't think that's it?" Wei Zhao glanced at her.
"I don't really understand such things." The tall woman shook her head. From her look she was plainly curious, but she did not voice a question.
Wei Zhao nodded inwardly. That one exchange was enough to show that she could not be from the secular world; otherwise she could not possibly be ignorant of something as basic as voltage. Her reaction was much the same as that of the natives on Yunjie Island.
Seeing her curiosity, Wei Zhao meant to seize the chance for a good long chat, but the tall woman simply said, "Then hurry up and change it."
"All right." The words already on his lips had to be swallowed. Wei Zhao could only smile wryly. The little ice queen truly had no wish to exchange another word with him.
Once the bulb was in, the room lit up again. Wei Zhao turned to look at the little ice queen and caught a rare flicker of delight on her face, though the moment she noticed his gaze it froze back into frost and snow.
"There, that should do it." Wei Zhao smiled.
"Thank you." The tall woman's expression had eased considerably compared with before—at least she no longer eyed Wei Zhao as some pervert who snapped photos up girls' skirts—but that was as far as it went. It was still a hundred thousand li from the quick intimacy Wei Zhao had envisioned, the kind that would let him pump her for information.
"It's nothing, only what I ought to do." Wei Zhao felt a little embarrassed. Of course it was what he ought to do—he was the one who had broken the bulb on purpose. If he did not change it, was he to make her go find someone else?
But his words only led the tall woman astray. Recalling the string of chance encounters these past days, her face, which had just softened a touch, hardened back into the impatient look of one who keeps strangers at bay. "Then I won't see you out," she said at once.
"Huh?" Wei Zhao stared, regarding her with a strange expression. This little ice queen burned the bridge fast—she had just had her bulb changed and was already shooing him off, not even offering him a sip of water. If he really left now, he would not have exchanged two words with her, and as for drawing closer, that was nonsense. Had all his effort been for nothing?
The tall woman simply watched him coldly, showing not the least intention of asking him to stay. Never mind that this was her icy nature to begin with—even if it were not, no girl could keep a man lingering in her room late at night, especially when she was about to go on soaking in her medicinal bath.
"Actually, this..." Wei Zhao could only force himself to try and explain the matter from last time. Even if he could not draw closer, he had at least to clear up the misunderstanding about the skirt photos; otherwise he would never get a word in with the little ice queen.
"You needn't say more. Go pursue someone else. You and I are not the same kind, so don't waste your scheming, or you'll live to regret it!" the tall woman said flatly.
Now Wei Zhao was utterly dumbstruck. All he had done was try to get close to her so he could pump her for information later—he had never once thought of pursuing her!
While Wei Zhao was still frozen in shock, she finished speaking, shoved him straight out the door, and shut it behind him.
