Chapter 5037 — So It Was You Two

"Er—of course you can't get online with that net of yours. You could use it to catch fish, though." Wei Zhao shook his head with a helpless laugh. The little ice queen had probably picked up somewhere that people could go online to look things up, but she had no grasp of the internet as modern technology at all; she simply took it for the kind of fishing net she knew. How was anyone supposed to get on that thing—by crawling up it like a spider?
"Catch fish? But I distinctly heard one can go online to look things up..." Leng Leng's expression turned a little awkward.
"Going online is going online, but that means the internet, not that fishing net of yours. Speaking of which, what is it you want to look up?" Wei Zhao asked.
"I just want to check whether there's a jade market nearby. I'd like to try my luck myself, since not every piece of jade is one I want—the kind I'm after is very rare," Leng Leng answered.
Wei Zhao laughed to himself. The spirit jade she wanted was more than merely rare; in this secular world it simply could not be found. Never mind the jade markets of some backwater town—turn every jade market in the whole secular world upside down and one would be hard put to find a single piece.
But Wei Zhao did not call her out on it then and there. Earlier, when there had been no progress, he had grown a little impatient and had even considered laying all his cards on the table; now that matters had come this far, however, he was in no hurry at all.
If things were simply allowed to run their natural course, the day would come when she reasoned out his identity on her own. That way it would not be too abrupt, nor would it lead to anything beyond his control; there was no need to rush ahead out of mere impatience. After all, from what he could see, those masters of the Heavenly Dao stage had no intention of disrupting the order of the secular world's cultivators for the time being, so the situation was not so urgent.
"Tell you what, I'll teach you." With that, Wei Zhao took out his phone and began explaining the secular world's internet to the little ice queen.
To be honest, this sort of thing was sheer fantasy to a cultivator with no modern knowledge whatsoever; it simply could not be grasped in a moment. Even after Wei Zhao had talked his mouth dry, the little ice queen remained utterly baffled and simply could not comprehend what on earth this virtual network was.
Seeing that blank, innocent look on her face, Wei Zhao gave up with a sigh and said, "Forget it. It's fine if you don't understand the thing itself—you just need a rough idea of how to use it. I'll teach you how to search. Look here. You just open this browser and type in whatever it is you want to find."
Wei Zhao demonstrated it for her hand over hand, and though Leng Leng still did not really understand any of it, it was at least far simpler than grasping the concept of the internet. Her eyes could not help lighting up. "This thing really is convenient. But why do these characters look so strange? It's as if a lot of strokes are missing—they're quite uncomfortable to look at."
"Oh, these are modern simplified characters, a simplified version of the ancient traditional ones. If you're not used to them, just set it to traditional." Wei Zhao promptly set it to traditional for her.
"That's much easier on the eyes." Leng Leng nodded, and she did not seem to grow suspicious; seeing that Wei Zhao could change the setting, she simply assumed both character forms were used throughout the secular world.
"Found the jade market you're looking for—there's one in the eastern district of Xima City, and it sounds fairly large." Wei Zhao held the phone out for her to glance at. Seeing her gazing at it so eagerly, he knew that though she said nothing, she probably wanted a phone of her own; after all, the thing really was convenient to use. So he suggested, "How about this: I'll take you to buy a phone first, then we'll go have a look around the jade market. What do you say?"
Leng Leng thought it over, then nodded. "All right, then."
The reason she agreed so readily was partly that her relationship with Wei Zhao had imperceptibly grown much closer of late, and she no longer kept him at such a distance. But the more important reason was that she knew her own limitations.
Having come abruptly from the primordial little jianghu into the secular world, even someone like her—who took to new things fairly quickly—could not possibly adapt all at once. Her speech and manner were often thoroughly out of place among secular folk, and the moment she stepped outside she might well get lost.
After all, the cities here were laid out far more intricately than the primordial little jianghu. Even the most prosperous parts of the little jianghu were just a scant few streets, whereas here the streets and alleys were countless; an outsider like her who had not yet adapted would lose her way at the slightest inattention. That was exactly what had happened last time she went to buy medicine—she had barely managed to find her way back.
If she carried a phone, though, she could check a map whenever she got lost, which would make things much easier. As yet she still had no idea that a phone's most basic function was making calls; she assumed it was purely for going online to look things up.
The two set out at once. Both were cultivators, and getting into the city would have been the work of a moment, but neither was willing to rashly tear away the paper screen between them just yet, so they had no choice but to wait honestly at the gate of the residential compound for the bus into town.
For Leng Leng this was an absolute first, and even Wei Zhao had little experience of it. So far as he could recall, ever since he had come down the mountain in the beginning, he had scarcely ever ridden a bus—least of all during the morning rush like this.
To commuters who had to squeeze onto buses morning and evening just to get to work, this was surely a miserable experience, yet Wei Zhao and Leng Leng found it quite novel. What left them both speechless, however, was that on the one occasion they deigned to take a bus, they should run into the legendary bus pervert.
The bus was packed shoulder to shoulder, bodily contact unavoidable—and for a beauty like Leng Leng in particular, there was no shortage of people only too eager to press against her, among them, naturally, a few stray hands seizing the chance to cop a feel.
Leng Leng had never encountered anything of the sort. Before the groping hand could even reach her, she spun around and drove a kick straight at the offender's crotch. Fortunately she still remembered the rules of tempering and held her strength in check; otherwise that kick would surely have cost him his life.
The man doubled over on the spot like a shrimp in agony, and a thug beside him immediately stepped in to stand up for him, bellowing arrogantly, "How dare you kick a brother of mine, Shan Ji's! Tired of living, are you? Who did it? Step out and kowtow your apology!"
Wei Zhao was thoroughly amused at the sight. Truly, enemies' paths were narrow—weren't these the very two who had come around pretending to be ghosts last time, Shan Ji and Bao Pi?
"So it was you two." Leng Leng turned and looked at them, a strange killing intent settling over her coldly pretty face. She was not merely a girl, after all, but an expert of the early Foundation Establishment stage who had seen blood and taken lives.
"Ah? It's you!" Shan Ji and Bao Pi were likewise stunned with fright. The bus was so crowded that, had Leng Leng not turned around just then, they could not have made out her features at all; from behind they could only judge that she was a rare beauty. Never in their wildest dreams would they have guessed that she was the woman in white who had kicked the two of them into such a sorry scramble last time!
