"Boss, are you all right?" Kang Xiaobo had been in a state of high excitement all morning. These past two days had been the most manly of his life. He had once read a post online about the things a man ought to do before he turned thirty, and one item on the list was to have been in a fight. Before this, Kang Xiaobo had assumed he would never manage it — and then, out of nowhere, he had pulled it off on the eve of the college entrance exams.
During the morning break exercises, Kang Xiaobo was so worked up he nearly followed Wei Zhao to the police station, but fortunately Wei Zhao stopped him with a look. Wei Zhao himself did not care. He had been sent here by the old man to carry out a mission, after all, though the mission was a strange one and he still had not seen what was so special about it. School was secondary. But Kang Xiaobo was different. If this affair really left a stain on his record, it would follow him for the rest of his life.
"It's fine. The police will sort it out soon enough. It was Black Panther who rounded up his thugs from off campus to make trouble at the school." As Wei Zhao spoke, he noticed Zhong Yongliang nearby pricking up his ears, and could not help but find it amusing. The kid was probably afraid Black Panther would give him up.
"That's good to hear," Kang Xiaobo said with relief. He had not gone to the police station with Wei Zhao that morning, and had been afraid Wei Zhao would think him disloyal. Now that Wei Zhao was fine, he was naturally happy too. "Boss, how about I treat you to something after school, to settle your nerves?"
"After school? We'll see then." Wei Zhao glanced at Gu Mengyao ahead of him and thought that once school let out he would have to go back with them — he had no say in the matter.
The first class of the afternoon was homeroom with Teacher Liu. Clearly Teacher Liu knew the morning's business was probably connected to Zhong Yongliang, but he did not dwell on it. After all, such things were best played down, and he did not want to leave any impression on the other students.
"The monthly exam is coming up soon, so today we'll start with a short quiz." Teacher Liu divided the test papers in his hands into stacks and handed them to the students in the front row of each group, to be passed back down the line.
In the senior year of high school it was basically a small test every two days and a big one every week, and most people had long since grown used to it. Though the morning's events had stirred a ripple in the dull, dry routine of study, in a senior year where every inch of time was worth an inch of gold, there was no spare moment to think about anything unrelated to the exams.
Though the morning's events had left the freshmen and sophomores endlessly shaken, to the seniors grinding away at their studies it was merely a small interlude in the tension of exam prep. The handful of campus delinquents who did not study, of course, were another matter.
What was passed to Wei Zhao was an English test paper. English was his strong suit; he was not only fluent in English but in the languages of many countries, all learned to meet the needs of his missions.
Wei Zhao had no wish to stand out too much. In the elite class of this elite high school, keeping to the middle of the pack was already enough to get into a decent university, so there was no need for him to make his grades too good.
He was only here to keep Gu Mengyao company at her books anyway, and how long that would last was anyone's guess.
So when Wei Zhao answered the questions, he deliberately got a portion of them wrong, and at the end of class had Kang Xiaobo hand it in along with his own.
"Boss, how did you do? This one was pretty hard — lots of vocabulary I'd never seen before." Kang Xiaobo's grades were not of the outstanding sort either; he was strictly average.
"So-so," Wei Zhao said with a smile. "Not too good."
