The car stopped at the entrance of Xuehai Bookstore. On the way it had even passed Songshan No.1 High School, and the bookstore was only about one stop from the school, so he could walk back after buying books.
Wei Zhao paid the fare, walked into Xuehai Bookstore, asked the sales assistant at the door for directions, and headed straight for the medical books section.
At this hour there were not many people in the bookstore, and even fewer in the medicine section, with only a scholarly-looking old man standing before the shelves flipping through something.
Following the labels on the shelves, Wei Zhao found the books he needed and began to look through them. He wanted to confirm the properties of several uncommon Chinese herbs. Yang Huaijun's internal injuries were very complicated, and his bodily functions had been thrown into complete disorder under the suppression of painkillers. Yet for some unknown reason he had not died, and there must have been an expert regulating his body, for the power of the Yang family behind Yang Huaijun was not to be underestimated.
"Young man, are you fond of Chinese medicine?" At some point the scholarly old man had come to Wei Zhao's side, glanced at the book in his hands, and suddenly asked.
"I have done some research on it." Wei Zhao smiled and nodded to the scholarly old man.
"Are you a student at the nearby medical university, young man?" The old man showed no sign of letting the matter drop and went on asking.
"No, I am a student at Songshan No.1 High School." Wei Zhao answered casually. He did not dislike the old man, for he could see the man was the academic type. If he had been the sort who struck up conversations for some ulterior purpose, Wei Zhao would not have bothered to say another word.
"Oh? A high school student?" The old man was rather surprised by Wei Zhao's words. Few young people nowadays were interested in Chinese medicine. There were medical university students who came to the bookstore to look up materials for exams, but they had no real interest in Chinese medicine either. Guan Xuemin had spent years searching for a final disciple to inherit his mantle, but to no avail. He had not expected to run into a high school student interested in Chinese medicine here in the bookstore.
There were quite a few students at the medical university with some knowledge of Chinese medicine, but most of them leaned toward Western medicine, studying Chinese medicine only to broaden their knowledge. None of them had ever thought of making Chinese medicine their future career and field of research, which left Guan Xuemin deeply disappointed.
To inherit his mantle, one first had to be interested in Chinese medicine oneself. If one already felt Western medicine was superior to Chinese medicine, what talk could there be of carrying on his legacy?
"Young man, which do you think is more formidable, our Chinese medicine or Western medicine?" Guan Xuemin could not help asking.
"Each has its strengths, but I lean toward Chinese medicine." Wei Zhao closed the book in his hands and picked up another one beside it to look up what he wanted. "Western medicine treats the symptoms, Chinese medicine treats the root. In some cases you must treat the symptoms before you can cure the root, but merely treating the symptoms without curing the root is no good either."
Though Wei Zhao's words were somewhat ambiguous, they struck a chord in Guan Xuemin's heart. Nor was he a diehard partisan of Chinese medicine. On the contrary, he had also made a profound study of Western medicine. Each had its strengths, and only by taking the best of both could one save lives and heal the sick.
"Young man, are you interested in applying to the medical university?" Guan Xuemin felt a love for talent and found Wei Zhao more pleasing the more he looked at him.
